12th August 2021 Principal’s Report As we go into an extended lockdown, announced yesterday, I would like to acknowledge the fantastic work of our students, parents, and staff. The transition back into the Remote Learning platform was seamless and we are most grateful for everyone’s contribution. This continues to be a challenging time for all; however, we are confident that the model of Remote Learning that we have in place is ensuring that all students are being catered for academically, socially, and emotionally. As I have stated in the past, we will continue to refine our Remote Learning approaches to provide the best possible learning and wellbeing environment for our community. Can I please remind everyone to monitor your Compass posts for the latest information regarding lockdowns, registering your children for onsite supervision, or information about returning to onsite learning. Unfortunately, we are not the first to learn about any changes to lockdowns or restrictions or schools closing or opening, which is why it is important to monitor your Compass notifications. We will endeavour to keep you as up to date as possible with the latest information regarding school. As we continue to work with changing rules and guidelines, we thank you for your ongoing support and understanding. Assembly This Friday we will still be holding an assembly via Webex. We will start assembly earlier at 11:45am. We will be announcing the Student of the Week Awards from last week, and Mathletics awards. Students will receive their certificates once we return to onsite learning. Please use the following link to watch: https://eduvic.webex.com/meet/cakar.filiz.f Alternatively, enter the meeting room number: 575 797 249 School Council Our next School Council meeting will be at 6.00 pm on Tuesday 17th August. You are all welcome to attend as guests. Please register your interest at the office. Given the current climate, we will determine whether this meeting will be conducted in person or via WebEx closer to the date and inform all school council members and anyone who has expressed an interest to attend as a visitor. Parent Opinion Survey Please be reminded that the parent opinion survey needs to be completed by Sunday 22nd August for those of you who have received an invite to partake. Many thanks to those who have already completed the survey. Principal’s Report (continued) Principal Conference Last week Clare and I attended the Education State Principals’ Conference (Day 1) through a comprehensive online forum. The conference identified some of the key impacts on student learning and wellbeing over the past years, and through recent months. During the conference, the importance of the link between learning and wellbeing was highlighted, with an acknowledgement of positive student wellbeing as a core requirement for learning to occur. The current landscape and circumstances are forcing us to change and adapt and the Education State Principals’ Conference presented online last week, focused on how school leaders can continue to lead, empower, and thrive into the future. Dr David Howes, Deputy Secretary, Schools and Regional Services announced refinements to the Framework for Improving Student Outcomes (FISO) with the focus shifting to Learning and Wellbeing. This is a welcomed priority and acknowledgment of the need to declutter and re- align the reform agenda. He identified 5 core elements which will provide opportunity for refinement and precision in the areas of direct impact, and we are looking forward to engaging in future discourse around this. Professor John Hattie provided insight and acumen into learnings from COVID experiences and how these may be applied moving forward. Whilst the experiences of last year may not have been what we had wished for, Professor Hattie presented evidence that remote and flexible schooling did not necessarily transpire to a lack of learning. Whilst the trajectory for learning may not have been as great, the importance of social and emotional learning was certainly highlighted. Finally, we heard the presentation by Kristen Douglas from Headspace, providing practical strategies and support for individual health and wellbeing in addition to approaches for leading teams and communities through challenging and difficult times. Year 6-7 Transition Last week, in accordance with the Department of Education, parents of children enrolling in Government High Schools, received a year 7 placement letter from Glen Waverley South Primary School, to advise them of an offer of placement for Year 7 2022. We hope you enjoyed sharing this exciting news in the next stage of your child’s education. Thanks to Miss Cakar and Mrs Alsop for their efforts in coordinating and completing this very important process. ICAS Assessments This an extract from an email from ICAS in response to the VIC Covid Lockdown 6. In response to the recent COVID-19 developments in Victoria and the uncertainty it brings to many schools, we’re adding an additional four- week ICAS sitting window in Term 4 from 5 Oct – 29 Oct 2021, to give affected schools and families peace of mind, as well as the chance to prepare for ICAS. In addition, the ICAS Writing test is moving to 5 Oct – 15 Oct 2021. This means the previously advertised window of 9-13 August is now cancelled. The new Term 4 window is the only opportunity to sit the Writing test in 2021. The English assessment should proceed as planned The school will inform parents of the new dates for Writing and Digital Technologies when they have been confirmed. Book Week 2021 We are celebrating Book Week with a Character Parade on Wednesday 25th August. Students are asked to come to school dressed as a book character. There is no cost involved so please support the library captains by dressing up. There is also a competition for Book Week. The prize for the winning entry for each level is a $25 book voucher. Japanese Word of the Week The Japanese Captains introduce the ‘Word of the Week’ to all students at assembly every Friday. Children are encouraged to use the word/phrase as much as possible during the following week. Each week students who have proved they can use the ‘Word of the Week’ to either the Japanese captains or Manzaki Sensei will go into the draw to win house points. By asking your child to tell you the ‘Word of the Week’ each week, you not only encourage him/her to use Japanese language at home, but you also have the opportunity to learn parts of the language too! ‘Word of the Week’ this week: できた!(De ki ta!) This means I did it! or I can do it! e.g. when your child has completed his/her lockdown learning activities through the day, he/she can say できた!(De ki ta!). When you want to ask your child whether he/she has completed his/her learning activities, you can ask できた?(De ki ta?) raising your voice tone towards to the end.
