Mission Moment PRESENTED BY EMC INSURANCE COMPANIES “People are at the heart of healthy communities. And when people unite under a shared purpose, and step up together to improve lives, we can build a brighter, stronger future for our community. That’s why EMC is proud to serve as Presenting Sponsor for the 2022 Fight For Air Climb – Des Moines.” -Scott Jean, EMC President and Chief Executive Officer DES MOINES MAN CLIMBS PRINCIPAL PARK IN MEMORY OF DAD LOST TO LUNG DISEASE Craig Green lost his dad in 2019 from complications related to lung disease. Now, he will climb with the EMCares Team for the first time at the American Lung Association in Iowa’s 2022 Fight For Air Climb, presented by EMC Insurance Companies, at Principal Park on Saturday, May 7. “Lung-related conditions affect millions of people of all ages and I hope to bring awareness to the issue and hope through fundraising to find some type of cure or improved treatment options,” said Green. Green’s dad was the strongest person Craig knew growing up and there wasn’t anything on their family’s farm he wasn’t able to accomplish. When his lung issues advanced, his activity at home was governed by a 30-foot-long oxygen hose and he had to bring multiple oxygen tanks with him on a simple trip to the grocery store. On October 22, 2019, Green’s dad passed away. In addition to his dad who suffered from lung disease, one of Green’s daughters has childhood asthma. “From children to adults, I don’t want any family to have to be challenged with the care of an individual or to have to struggle with impacted health and in a worst-case scenario, a premature passing of any loved one,” said Green. “The more we can learn about lung disease, the better we all can be regarding the symptoms and treatment.” In February 2021, Green joined EMC Insurance Companies as a reinsurance claims director. Although he’s participated in four Climb events, this year’s Climb will be his first with the EMCares Team, which was the top corporate fundraising team in the 2021 Climb raising over $6,000. The EMCares Team hopes to beat that total this year and will have over 40 employees, family members, and friends. “We recently refreshed our Company values, one of which is “Integrity”” said Green. “This team is an extension of that value in which ‘we do the right thing, always.’ Being a part of this cause fits the ‘doing the right thing’ subpoint to this value. We climb because we can with the hope of making a difference for others who can’t.”

Our Work In Action ASTHMA: Every day, children and adults with chronic asthma try to minimize and avoid the things that trigger an attack. Although there is no cure, asthma can be managed, which is where we come in. The American Lung Association is a recognized authority for asthma health professionals, school personnel and families who are impacted by the disease. And so, every day, 365 days a year, thousands of people across the country turn to us for support and free resources to manage asthma at home, work and at school. To learn more about the Lung Association’s resources on Asthma go to Lung.org/Asthma. LUNG CANCER: Last year, our annual State of Lung Cancer Report showed that lung cancer survival rates are improving. However, the report also showed that lung cancer remains the country’s #1 cancer killer. Curing lung cancer will not be a single event, but a continuous progression of meaningful breakthroughs over time. Those breakthroughs are only possible because of the sustained and reliable support from Fight For Air Climb participants like you. That’s why we created the COVID-19 Action Initiative and committed $25 million to end COVID-19 and protect against future pandemics. By participating in the Fight For Air Climb, you are helping to PREVENT future outbreaks by investing in respiratory virus research. PROVIDE free lung health education and masks to those in need. PROTECT public health by advocating for COVID-19 and flu vaccines in underserved communities of color. Now, we’ve leveraged that experience and expertise to address the alarming youth vaping epidemic through our nationwide Vape- Free Schools Initiative. One in four teens has vaped, and the number of middle and high school students using e-cigarettes increased to 5.4 million in 2019. Vaping can permanently damage lungs. When you participate in the Fight For Air Climb you support our work to end the youth vaping epidemic.
