President's Perspective - Great Lakes Heritage Quilters
President’s Perspective
by Ruth Montalvo

Wasn't Becky Goldsmith a terrific kick-off for our year of virtual
speakers? Her comment about preferring virtual classes over
in-person was interesting. It will be fascinating to see how
quilting is changed by the pandemic & social distancing in the
long term. It might be right behind the bicentennial as far as
historical events that have influenced quilting. We might be
able to learn from world-class teachers without the cost of a
retreat, a show, or a cruise, but still have the face-to-face
feedback to help us improve.

Speaking of world-class teachers, I've gotten hooked on Lisa
Walton's series “Quilt Stories” on youtube. Lisa interviews
quilting icons about their quilts, from conception to construction
to quilting. I am overly-inspired (is that even a thing?) I don't
have nearly enough time for all the projects that have been
bubbling in my head, not to mention the mask challenge, the
Sun & Moon challenge, and the completely adorable House &
Flying geese blocks for our Raffle Quilts. Luckily, the holidays
means more quilting time for me, so I'm sure I'll be all caught up
by New Year (lol).

ZOOMING
Michelle Power, 2nd VP

Our Zoom meetings keep getting better and better as our members get more
comfortable with this convenient platform! To help you open Zoom easily on the night
of our meetings, make sure to look for the link a week before our second Thursday
meeting. Register as soon as you get the link, and be sure to open it on the
device you will be using for the meeting. This will help reduce problems when you
are logging into the meeting. Don't delete the message until AFTER the meeting.
There is also a calendar attachment at the bottom of the registration confirmation.
Clicking on it will add our meeting to the calendar on your device (depending on your
device and mail program, steps may vary). I also recommend to not delete the
registration confirmation until AFTER the meeting. If you feel so inclined, you could set
up a folder in your mail program labeled "GLHQ Meetings" or similar, to store your
meeting invites to keep your inbox tidy. If you have any questions about Zoom, please
reach out to me and I'll be happy to help you!

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Finding Your Zoom Invitation
By Sharyl Kle ke

When receiving your no fica on regarding our next Zoom mee ng, you are asked to register
for the mee ng. Only a er registering will you receive the actual invita on to the Zoom
mee ng. I have had trouble finding my invita ons which include the quick links into the Zoom
mee ng. I follow a couple of procedures that make it easier. One may work for you, too.

 1) On some email systems you can “flag” or “star” an email. Then on mee ng night, you can
just look under the “flagged” emails to find it quickly.
 2) Since I use Google for my email and calendar, I am offered a choice to post to my calendar
when I receive the invita on. Apple Calendar offers this, too. Then on mee ng night, I
find the link on my e-calendar.
 3) Keeping the emailed invita on on the same device as the one I use for my Zoom mee ngs
means I can click directly on the link in the invita on to reach the mee ng. I usually don’t
need the group IDs or the passwords since it is built into the invita on.

I hope this makes mee ngs nights easier. If you have also developed a way to use technology
easier, please share!

to have several retreats looking for people to chair them: Spring 2021 and 2022.
Please let me know if you would like to chair any of these committees.

RAFFLE QUILT UPDATE Donna Armstrong

This year we will be making 2 members-only Raffle Quilts celebrating our guild. If you want a
chance to win one of these adorable quilts, make a block (details below) and chip in $5. (No
selling tickets this time.) Each block + $5 donation will get you an entry in the drawing. You
can enter one, or both, or more than once. If you are unable to make a block, you may donate
$10 and enter into the drawing of one of the quilts. The winners will be announced at the June
meeting.

Decisions, decisions, decisions! Here are the patterns:

QUILT # 1: The first quilt will be a rendition of what we all have been going through most of
2020 - "AT HOME". Pick any block from Moda's free pattern "Will You Be my Neighbor". I
have added the link to Pat Sloan's web page that gives the directions for all 16 blocks. All the
blocks are between 9"x18" - 21"x18" Please square them up to the appropriate size. We will
be using an assortment of colors from our new GLHQ logo (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and
Blue) with a white background.

https://www.ilovetomakequilts.com/will-you-be-my-neighbor-block-page.html

QUILT # 2: The second quilt will be a combination of past and future. Since Donna Tarnas
was key to the creation of our new logo, we reached out to her for input. I was not aware, but
the five flying geese in the logo represent the five Great Lakes and they are flying north
because that’s where Michigan is! Up north. This will represent the future. When the quilt is
constructed, we will add an applique of Michigan, from our previous logo, and that will
represent the past. As with the 1st quilt, we will be using a combination of our new logo colors
to create the flying geese blocks in the quilt shown below. Please be creative with lots of solids
and prints of the logo colors, (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Blue). We will be using the free
Robert Kaufman "Remixed Geese" pattern. Please square each block to 3.5"x6.5" and sew 2
matching geese together.

A BIRTHDAY ANNOUNCEMENT FROM MARTHA!

News from The Needlework & Textile Guild of Michigan
Workshop program
by Kathy Bricker
I am program chair for The Needlework and Textile Guild of Michigan (NTGM). Along with all of
you, we are navigating the Zoom platform in this crazy COVID world and exploring ways to bring
programming to our members.

                                                                                            9
In November, we are welcoming Natalya Khorover from New York (artbynatalya.com) as our
Zoom lecturer and workshop instructor. She will be teaching her “Plastic Nature” workshop
utilizing single-use plastics as the textile to stitch up lovely quilts using machine and hand
stitching. As you can see from her website, her work is beautiful and her Zoom experience is
quite polished. We are offering two sessions of this workshop. One will be Wednesday,
November 11 from 10a-5p and the other on Saturday, November 14 from 10a-5p. We have a
few spaces available in each class and would like to invite non-members of NTGM to participate
as well. The fee for the workshop will be $75, which will include an invitation to Natalya’s lecture
“Alternative Stitching Practices” during our Zoom meeting on November 10 at 11am. I am
attaching our newsletter announcement which includes Natalya’s bio, class description and
supply list. Contact me at kwoz1@me.com or Barbara Skimin at barbara.skimin@gmail.com to
answer questions or secure a spot in one of the workshops.

Lecture “Alterna ve S tch Prac ces”
November 10 11:00am via ZOOM
Alterna ve S tching Prac ces - What can you s tch on? Just about everything! Natalya will show
examples which will mo vate you and inspire you, sharing details of the pleasures and occasional pi alls
of working with each. This lecture will broaden your understanding of what you can use in your art.
Natalya uses medita ve hand-s tching and mending of vintage linen, alongside her industrial sewing
machine to s tch and collage layers of translucent single- use plas cs which would otherwise contribute
to li er pollu on. The transforma on she subjects them to makes these materials unrecognizable.
