President’s Message
Dear PSSC,

It’s almost showtime!

By now you should have received your jury results for our 9th
Annual PSSC Members’ Exhibition, which debuts March 17. Once
again, pastel will reign, as we open the doors of the Torrance
Lexus Service Center for the public to view one of the most
beautiful pastel shows anywhere in Southern California!

The Exhibition features 144 paintings by nearly 60 artists, and
they are spectacular! You all have gone beyond excellence,
continually pushing yourselves to create higher levels of art, by
taking advantage of PSSC’s many workshops, classes, demos,
paint-ins and paint-outs, sharing and critiques. We have already
had amazing workshops this year with Otto Stürcke and Joe

                             “The Painting Surface”

                    March Demonstration by Ede Streiff

Ede will show us a homemade surface and a
professional paper and how their differences impact
the finished painting.

I am a Southern California artist who loves to paint and be outdoors. I have painted in oil
but more recently I have been focused on watercolor and pastel. Painting is fun for me
and I enjoy the process of creating a new piece. As often as I can, I paint on location.
When painting in my studio I use photos and sketches gathered from traveling to various
interesting places. I have enjoyed painting trips to France and Italy. I have studied with
accomplished artists and instructors in Italy, France, New Mexico, Arizona, Hawaii, and
locations along the west coast of the US.

I have memberships with: Watercolor West, Huntington Beach Art League, Studio 250, and
Pastel Society of Southern California.

It should be about having fun and if something good is created, great.

Otto Stürcke Workshop
By Jill K. Berry

Otto Stürcke taught a three-day workshop at the beginning of the new year
that I was fortunate to attend. I am a new member and have not touched
pastels for years, but like the others in the society am blown away by the
precision and beauty of his work. It was good that I was rested because this
man came prepared to teach us an immense amount of stuff. We had lots of
demos that included what materials he uses and why, how to transfer a
drawing from a photograph to your surface, setting up a still life for a
dynamic composition, making our own pastels, cleaning filthy dusty old ones,
setting up the perfect painting station, photographing your still life, to
sharpening the unusual set of pencils he uses in his craft.

We learned about the principles of light and shadows, reflections and
contrast. We learned about value, and this is something I thought I
understood until he broke it down. He said color and hue matter the least
while value matters the most in good paintings. He gave us each a value
chart that we used all weekend to check the source compared to the value of
the pastel we intended to use. It was a game changer for me and for others
in the class who were not new to this art. Each of us set about making a
painting using only black and white pastels and pencils to create a still life
with accurate values. It was more challenging than it might seem and a
valuable exercise. We did watercolor under-painting on boards he showed us
how to prepare, and I learned that more detail on the under-painting was not
a wasted effort.

Otto was so full of energy, so generous with his expansive knowledge of all
things having to do with the art of pastel that I can honestly recommend his
class to anyone interested in this medium even if his style does not align with
yours. What he teaches applies to anyone who paints with pastels and you
will walk away with a truckload of new information. He has gathered all the
tricks of the trade because he is endlessly curious about how to do things,
how to make things work better and easier in pastel painting and he is more
than willing to share what he has learned with each student with enthusiasm.
His work is brilliant and precise, his manner warm and inviting. He presents
as much as the participants can handle and then works the room to cover the
needs of each person. He never sat down. The last day Otto showed up in a
shirt with a lightening bolt on the front of it and I thought "yeah" the
energizer teacher!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Headline: The Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation and Porch Gallery Ojai
present Thomas Fire Artists’ Recovery Exhibition

Show Dates : February 1 - March 11, 2018 Photo: Gary Lang, Stars ,
2013
Ojai, CA, January 9, 2018
The Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation and Porch Gallery Ojai are
pleased to announce the Thomas Fire Artists’ Recovery Exhibition to
benefit the Thomas Fire Artist Recovery Fund - a grassroots initiative to
raise, match, and distribute unrestricted cash grants to members of the
Ventura and Santa Barbara counties’ creative communities seriously
affected by the Thomas fire.
The Thomas fire, which started on the evening of December 4th is now
the largest in California history. The first phase of the Thomas Fire Artist
Recovery Fund was to gather information about the impact the fire had on
our creative communities. The second phase of the Thomas Fire Artist
Recovery Fund will include a matched fundraising campaign led by the
Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation, with a public program of free and
ticketed events, as well as a fundraising art exhibition hosted by the Porch
Gallery Ojai featuring artworks donated to benefit the Fund.
As of January 1, 2018, The Thomas Fire Artist Recovery Fund had
received 15 requests for support from artists that have been severely
impacted by the Thomas Fire, half of whom have lost either their home or
studio, or both. The Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation and Porch Gallery
Ojai plan to raise over $30,000 in order to offer unrestricted gifts of
$5,000, $2,500, and $500, to these artists, depending on need.

Thomas Fire Artists Recovery Exhibition will be held at the Porch Gallery
Ojai. As of January 9, 2018 the participating artists are: Joshua
Abarbanel, Akka B., Richard Amend, Susan Stinsmuehlen-Amend, Wyatt
Amend, Phil Argent, Bobbi Bennett, Jane Callister, Norman Clayton,
Russell Crotty, Lynn Cunningham Brown, Ann Diener, Sally England,
Penelope Gottleib, Patrick Hammerlein, Cassandra C Jones, Gary Lang,

Reinman, Maria Rendon, Catherine Ruane, George Sanders, Ro Snell
Sanders, Carol Shaw Sutton, Ashleigh Sumner and Seyburn Zorthian.

The opening reception, February 3r d , will feature a performance by Ojai
resident, Andrea Brook aka Sonic Butterfly. Brook will be "stringing the
Porch" with her own design of long-string harp, Sonic Butterfly, a two
octave, chromatic, acoustic harp with 60 foot long strings and projection
- more -
and/or LED wings. The 60ft strings will span out across the roof of the
porch, turning the gallery into an instrument and creating a full sensory
experience.
In conjunction with the exhibition, The Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation
will host On Love & Loss , a public podcast series. The foundation’s
Executive Director, Frederick Janka, will lead the conversations which will
feature artists Cruz Ortiz, Sharon Louden and one to be determined.
About the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation:
The Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation, a 501(c)3 public arts organization,
was founded in 2015 by family and friends of esteemed art patron and
private art dealer Carolyn Glasoe Bailey. Currently based in Ojai, the

long art learning beginning in elementary school. Current programs
include unrestricted cash grants for artists, funding for arts education
initiatives, an artist residency program in Ojai, CA, as well as a series of
public programs and events including a podcast artist conversation series
available on iTunes.
