VIRTUAL DANCE PARTY WITH DJ SEVEREPresident’s Welcome
Congratulations on achieving the President’s Honor Award at Los
Angeles Southwest College. Your hard work, your dedication and
your persistence in the classroom have paid off. You have earned
this day. This high level of academic achievement is no small feat
and is an accomplishment that you should be immensely proud
of.
Your journey to today demonstrates your ability to overcome any
challenge presented to you. The ability to achieve a 3.5-grade
point average for three straight semesters is truly remarkable.
You excelled inside the classroom while also living life outside of
the classroom. You are parents, grandparents, workers,
managers, community leaders, athletes, musicians, promising
poets, and everything in-between. You have your hands full, but,
yet, you are thriving. You have been able to do so because you
challenged yourself to be the best and to live your best life. You
have not chosen the easy path but rather you continue to pursue
your goals with the relentless energy of a leader. For this, I am
honored to be your president at LASC and am so appreciative
that you attend our college.
Take this academic success as evidence that you can do
anything that you put your mind to. Become a change agent not
just in the classroom, but within our community. We need more
leaders in society today and you should feel confident that you
can be that leader. Do not settle. Do not stay quiet. Continue to
advocate for yourself and for those who do not have a voice.
Always challenge yourself to be the best and to push yourself to
greatness. You have the ability to make this world better. I know
this because you have made LASC better. I’m truly appreciative
and proud of you.

Guest Speaker
First elected in 2014, Autumn R. Burke represents the 62nd District
in the California State Assembly, an economically and ethnically
diverse district that includes Los Angeles Southwest College.
A Los Angeles native, Assemblywoman Burke is an entrepreneur
and small business owner with a proven record of business
development and community outreach. She has worked to help
provide pathways to green technology and energy efficiency for
neighborhoods and disadvantaged communities. She has taken
that same passion for innovation to Sacramento with a focus on
policy to expand access to health care, education and living-
wage jobs for all.President’s Scholars

recipients have met the requirements for the Dean's Honors
Awards list for three consecutive primary semesters -- either
Fall or Spring -- with a 3.5 grade point average or higher.
