PRESENTS Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership 2019 Ohio South Leadership Seminar June 6 – 9, 2019 • Marietta College • Marietta, Ohio SPONSORED BY
WELCOME TO HOBY On behalf of our entire HOBY Ohio South Seminar Core Team and Corporate Board, we are honored to welcome you to our annual Leadership Seminar! Our dedicated, all-volunteer staff has spent the past year planning, fundraising, and training to create an experience that we hope you remember and treasure for the rest of your life. Our goal is to help you realize your own leadership potential by exposing you to new ideas, helping you step outside your own experiences, and leading you through our rigorous leadership development curriculum. Above all, we strive to teach you how to think, not what to think. Rachel Foltz Nash and You were selected as a HOBY Ambassador because others in your life Jacob Manser see something special in you. They recognize you as a natural leader, and HOBY Ohio South we will treat you as such. We won’t lead you to conclusions or force you Seminar Chairs to participate. We will encourage you to challenge your own beliefs and opinions by exposing you to those of others – both your fellow ambassadors and a diverse group of outside speakers. We hope you take full advantage of this opportunity to learn, question yourself and others, leave your comfort zone, and grow as a leader. Ask questions. Debate with your fellow ambassadors. Challenge the speakers. However you choose to engage, your HOBY experience will be what you make it – step up and lead! Over the years, our seminar has helped thousands of young Ohioans realize their full leadership potential and create enormous, lasting change in their communities. We hope that after this weekend, you’ll return to your community equipped with a knowledge of your own ability and a keen sense of leading for the future. Your experience at HOBY is a product of those who have come before you and volunteered countless hours toward this year’s seminar. We hope that when you leave us as a HOBY alumnus, you’ll use your time and talent to give back to the future generations of leaders who will follow in your footsteps. Finally, we ask you to trust us. Whatever your comfort zone, limits, or set-in-stone opinions; whether you’re way too cool to do the Wiggalo or think you’re too shy to ask a question in front of your fellow ambassadors; we hope you’ll suspend those notions for just 72 hours. Open your minds to new ideas. Take risks. Be open to the prospect of failure – after all, isn’t that the best way to learn? We promise that if you fall, we will catch you. If you open yourself to new experiences, you just might find something extraordinary within. Welcome to HOBY Ohio South. We’ve done our very best to plan a life-changing weekend for you. We hope you learn, grow, make lifelong friends, and have the time of your life. HOBY Ohio South | 2019 Youth Leadership Seminar 1
