This 3-day course in Mumbai, India, provides practical, evidence-
based knowledge and skill in physical therapy evaluation and
intervention with the pregnant and postpartum patient.
This 3-day course provides practical, evidence-based knowledge and skill in
physical therapy evaluation and intervention with the pregnant and postpartum
patient. Didactic instruction includes: anatomical and physiologic changes in
pregnancy; differential diagnosis in peri-partum; pregnancy-specific changes in
posture and gait; postpartum recovery and scar tissue assessment and intervention;
modalities during pregnancy and post-partum, biomechanical strategies; exercise
and wellness in pregnancy and postpartum. Additionally, advanced clinical decision
making with this population is discussed. Labs contain an average ratio of 8:1
participants to lab instructors to ensure valuable attention to each participant.           OPEN TO:

Labs offer skills that are immediately applicable in your clinic and include:                 Physiotherapist Assistants
modifications of the pregnant examination; lumbopelvic examination and special                Student Physical Therapists in
tests (particularly for pelvic girdle dysfunctions); diastasis rectus abdominis               their 2nd/3rd Year
assessment and intervention; external pelvic floor assessment and exercise (NO
internal pelvic floor taught at this course); stabilization exercise in pregnancy and       COURSE HOURS:

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to perform the following:

EXAMINATION/EVALUATION

1) Describe the anatomic and physiologic changes related to pregnancy and
postpartum and how they affect evaluation and intervention.
2) Perform an appropriate evaluation of a pregnant or postpartum patient with
musculoskeletal dysfunction or pain.
3) Assess for diastasis rectus abdominis with objective measurement skills.

DIAGNOSIS/PROGNOSIS
4) Differentiate between musculoskeletal and medical diagnoses based on the
subjective and objective evaluation of a pregnant or postpartum patient.
5) Differentiate between low back, pelvic girdle and hip pain/dysfunction.
6) Develop functional goals for musculoskeletal impairments in pregnancy and
postpartum based on a systematic interview and examination of the patient.

INTERVENTION
7) Develop an evidence-based plan of care for physical therapy intervention of
pregnant or postpartum patients with musculoskeletal impairments or
dysfunction.
8) Perform selected manual therapy interventions for the treatment of pregnant
and postpartum patient.
9) Prescribe an appropriate wellness exercise program for a variety of skill levels for
a pregnant or postpartum client.

 Requirements
 Attendance: Participants are expected to stay through the entire course;
 please make your travel plans accordingly. Deduction of contact hours
 hours and ineligibility to participate in the CAPP process will occur for
 participants who leave the course early.

 Lab Participation: Participants will be working in groups of 2-3 during
 labs. All participants will participate in labs as both “clinician” and
 “patient.” These labs are appropriate for ALL participants to fully
 participate, including pregnant, post-partum and male participants.
 Please, make sure to fill out the External Consent & Release Form.pdf and
 submit the completed form to the instructor of the class on Day 1 of the
 course. If the course participant does not turn in the completed form on
 Day 1, he/she will not be permitted to take the course.

Faculty
          Sandra Gallagher, PT, WCS
          Sandi specializes in caring for people with pelvic floor problems and pain during pregnancy. She has
          advanced training in evaluating conditions of the pelvic floor including bowel and bladder problems
          and pain. She sees women, men and children who have these problems. Sandi enjoys working with
          people and having the opportunity to teach them how to reduce their symptoms.
          Active with the APTA Section on Women's Health as CAPP-OB committee assistant chair and teaching
          assistant, Sandi takes part in training therapists in the evaluation and treatment of pregnant patients
          and patient with pelvic floor dysfunction. She is the recipient of Volunteer of the Year award along
          with the six member committee of 2013 Section on Women's Health.
          In her spare time, Sandi enjoys spending time with her family, bicycling, reading, and gardening.

          Susan Giglio, PT, RYT
          Susan has been practicing pelvic health therapy since 1990. She has been an active member of the CAPP
          OB committee for several years since its inception in 2007. She has been a CAPP OB instructor since 2008.
           She served on the CAPP Pelvic committee for three years and began instructing the CAPP Pelvic courses
          in 2015.
          Through the years Susan has built several programs, both private practice and hospital based. Her
          current work environment is at a hospital based out patient clinic where she increased the patient
          referrals from requiring one part time therapist to two and a half therapists.
          Susan became a registered yoga teacher in 2011 and now spends much of her time doing private yoga
          instruction, teaching yoga classes and workshops, and teaching anatomy to the teacher trainees. She
          brings her love of movement and breathing into her PT treatments to create a safe space for patients with
          persistent pain, pre and postpartum issues and incontinence.

          Darla Cathcart, PT, DPT, WCS, CLT
          Darla has helped author and currently teaches the Pregnancy and Postpartum courses for the Section on
          Women’s Health. She also serves as a lab assistant for Pelvic Health Physical Therapy courses. Darla is
          currently pursuing a PhD in Neurobiology at University of Arkansas Medical Sciences with a research focus in
          pelvic pain. She obtained her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Louisiana State University Health
          Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA. She completed the Women’s Health Residency at Duke University prior to
          becoming a board certified Women’s Health Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.
          In addition, she has completed education and training to receive her Certified Lymphedema Therapist
          certificate (Academy of Lymphatic Studies) and her Certificate of Achievement in Pelvic Physical Therapy
          (Section on Women’s Health (SoWH) of the American Physical Therapy Association).
          Darla's clinical background is in orthopedics and specialty areas of pregnancy and postpartum care, pelvic
          pain, bowel and bladder rehabilitation, breast cancer and lymphedema care, and osteoporosis management.
          Darla has previously served as the Director of Education and the Vice President for the Section on Women's
          Health-APTA She is currently a member of the CAPP-OB committee.
