WELCOME FROM THE CHAIR Dear conference attendees, KAED members, sponsors and speakers, On behalf of the KAED Foundation and KAED Board of Directors, please let me welcome you to the 2021 Economic Forum. It’s great to be back together again, to network with colleagues and partners. While our previous events like the Collaboration Conference have been successful and received great feedback, we recognize that the value of these events is really the personal interaction that can occur when we can meet in the hallways and at receptions to share best practices and noteworthy information. 2021 has brought about great progress as a Commonwealth and an Association. Project activity is as high now as it has been for several years, and the announcement of the BlueOvalSK Battery Park will have an impact on continued projects that involve advanced manufacturing for many years to come. Landing a project of this magnitude requires a healthy economic development ecosystem, and highlights Kentucky’s ability to compete. This project and many recent announcements also signify practices that our association should be focused on for the next few years, namely: product development, fostering partnerships, marketing Kentucky as a place of possibilities, growing our population, getting people back to work and advocating for small and entrepreneurial business. As an association, we’ve accomplished some monumental things which will be highlighted further and built upon during this Forum. First, we are as financially healthy as we have ever been. This financial health can be attributed to our growing membership base which has increased by 140 this year. We have a renewed focus on our committees including our newest Diversity and Inclusion Committee. We’ve adopted a code of ethics and created an ethics hotline, and we’re on the verge of new strategic initiatives that will drive a comprehensive strategy going forward. Finally, I’m proud to be part of a utility group that banded together a few years ago to create a partnership with the Cabinet for Economic Development and develop more sites and buildings across the state. We’re on the verge of the fourth round of the Product Development Initiative which continues to gain steam and help projects land in places like Henderson where Pratt Paper will build a new $400 million facility. Thanks to the Kentucky Small Business Development Center for being the presenting sponsor, and thanks to One East Kentucky, Pikeville and Pike County for their planning efforts to host this year’s Forum. While unfortunate events led us to Lexington, we’re looking forward to being back in Eastern Kentucky again soon. Thanks to Gina Greathouse, Commerce Lexington and all the other partners who helped make this pivot a smooth one and for helping pick the new Marriott City Center property as our host. It’s been an honor for me to be your Chairman this year, and I look forward to continuing to support our Board, committees and leadership team including Bob Helton who will assume the chairmanship role next year. I truly believe our future is as bright as ever. John Bevington 2021 KAED Chair K E N T U C K Y A S S O C I AT I O N F O R E C O N O M I C D E V E LO P M E N T 3

KENTUCKY AGRICULTURE GROWS OUR ECONOMY Money doesn’t grow on trees, but the Kentucky farmer grows valuable agricultural products that make up a sizable portion of Kentucky’s economy. According to the University of Kentucky, agriculture is responsible for more than $48 billion in economic impact. That’s why we at the Kentucky Department of Agriculture view agriculture as economic development and why we partner with organizations like the Kentucky Association of Economic Development. These partnerships are valuable to Dr. Ryan Quarles our farm community and our economic development Agriculture Commissioner leaders. But don’t take my word for it: hear it from them. “Agriculture has always played an important part in our daily lives,” Jennifer Meadows of Rip’s Farm Center said. “As a family-owned ag business in Lewis County, I see the impact that the ag industry has in our community. With the partnership of the Economic Development Association in our local counties, agricultural leaders can partner with county leaders to emphasize and promote the importance and economic impact that farm products have across the state. The Kentucky Proud program and the series of Linking Agriculture Jennifer Meadows Rip’s Farm Center for Networking and Development (LAND) forums with our farmers and Lewis County manufacturers organized by the Department of Agriculture have been vital in raising awareness of our great industry.” “There is unmeasurable value in having the opportunity to sit down with manufacturers and farmers to solve real problems together, all while keeping the solutions here in Kentucky,” said Zach Lawrence, the director of the Hazard - Perry County Economic Development Alliance. “It is imperative that we bring people together to create impactful opportunities to maintain and grow our economy. The Linking Agriculture for Networking and Development (LAND) forums provide a framework for constructive communication that can lead directly to action, as we continue to work to create opportunities for the people of Kentucky. Thanks to Commissioner Quarles, the Kentucky Department of Zach Lawrence Hazard-Perry County Economic Agriculture, and the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers for creating a time Development Alliance and space to foster these conversations.” LEARN MORE AT KYAGR.COM/TRADE
