Preparing Your Presentation Proposal 50TH ANNUAL GAS CONFERENCE MAY 19TH - 22ND | TACOMA, WA The 2021 GAS Conference marks the 50th Anniversary of the Glass Art Society bringing together the international glass community. GAS 2021 in Tacoma will explore the past 50 years of glass and celebrate our community like never before! We will also examine and discuss what the next 50 years holds for making, collecting, and educating as we all continue to navigate the international effects of 2020. GAS invites you to share your experiences and expertise with the international glass community in support of GAS’s mission to encourage excellence, advance education, promote appreciation, and support the development of the worldwide community of artists who work with glass. WHO SHOULD APPLY GAS is looking for diverse and engaging proposals from artists, educators, curators, researchers, and more. We want to bring together demos, lecmos, lectures, panels, and performances that: • Explore techniques and collaborations in all areas of glass, such as: o Hot o Cold + Engraving o Flameworking o Neon + Plasma o Kiln + Mold-making • Explore different stages of career development or involvement in the glass community, including: o Emerging o Mid-Career o Established Professionals • Showcase presenters from around the world, especially: o Africa o Asia o Eastern Europe o Other Underrepresented Communities • Highlight artists or organizations that increase visibility for BIPOC creativity and voices. • Present ideas that are relevant to the glass community and speak to current trends and issues related to glass making and study. PRESENTER DETAILS Types of Presentations • Demonstrations (Demos): 1.5-hour presentations feat. demonstrations of hot, cold, flame, & neon glassmaking. • Lecture/Demonstrations (Lecmos): 1.5-hour presentations featuring a combination of a lecture, with pre-made materials, and live a demonstration. Most appropriate for kiln-working, mold-making, etc. showcasing the steps/process of making more time-consuming pieces. • Lectures: 1-hour presentations, from emerging artists to educators & established professionals & curators. • Panels: 1.5-hour presentations featuring panels of artists, experts, and educators who bring innovative & unique glass topics to the stage. • Other (films, performances, workshops, etc.): up to 1.5-hour presentations that show the diversity of the glass art community. Key Dates & Selection Process Proposal Applications Open: June 8, 2020 at 12:00 am PDT Submission Deadline: July 19, 2020 at 11:59 pm PDT Each proposal must be complete and instructions must be fully followed in order to be considered. The GAS Board of Directors and Site Committee co-chairs will review all submissions that meet the requirements. Proposals will be scored using a 1-7 scale. If selected, a notification of acceptance and instructions on how to proceed will be sent via Submittable.com. For inquiries, please call 206-382-1305, or e-mail jenna@glassart.org. Honorariums Every presenter is given one complimentary conference pass (unless otherwise noted). Honorariums are determined by type of presentation and are dispersed after the Conference. If you would like to donate all or part of your honorarium back to GAS, you will be able to do so on your Service Agreement. • Demos - $400 total honoraria (plus 1 complimentary conference pass for assistant). • Lecmos - $400 total honoraria • Lectures - $400 total honoraria • Panels - $250 honorarium for moderator, $200/panelist (max. 3 panelists) • Other - determined by presentation *All honorariums are confirmed in Service Agreements by the GAS office. Travel & Accommodation Travel and accommodations during the conference are the responsibility of each presenter. Please visit the website for recommendations. Co-Presenters Presentations typically have 1-3 presenters. Panels are allotted 1 moderator with up to 3 additional panelists. Before submitting a proposal with one or multiple co-presenters, verify their willingness to participate and travel. Also, note presenters should be able to give their presentation in English or have a translator present. *Please note, additional presenters do not receive an additional honorarium. Additional Requirements Conference lecmo presenters, lecturers, and panel moderators are required to submit a 1000-1400-word article based on their presentation for the 2021 GAS Conference Journal. GAS MEMBERSHIP You do not need to be a GAS member to submit a presentation proposal or to present at the conference. There is the opportunity to have membership fees withdrawn from your presenter honorarium. Your membership would become active after the Conference. Membership Questions? E-mail membership inquiries to Kristenf@glassart.org WRITING YOUR PROPOSAL Every year, the Glass Art Society brings together the international community of glass artists and enthusiasts and provides diverse opportunities for members to make contacts, learn new techniques, and have fun together. Proposals should be inclusive of diverse artistic and professional identities within the glass community. Successful proposals will put forth presentations that highlight specific techniques, encourage innovation, and/or celebrate creative problem-solving. Consider a Track: • Career Development (marketing, grant writing, etc.) • Careers in Art • Community Empowerment / Outreach • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Glass Community • Education (higher education, nonprofit programming, etc.) • Gallery / Museum Representation • Green Ideas (sustainability, efficiency, etc.) • Highlighting the Voices of Black, Indigenous, & Other People of Color (BIPOC) QUESTIONS?
