The Rugby World Cup Brand Since its humble origins in 1987, the Rugby World Cup brand has grown from a single logo to a broad and multi-faceted visual identity programme that connects emotionally and extensively across the sport’s diverse spectrum of stakeholders from players and fans to officials, media and investors. It is now firmly established as one of the world’s largest and most recognised sports brands. RWC 2019 sees the brand taken to a new level, setting new benchmarks and legacies for rugby in Japan, whilst continuing to promote rugby’s character building values of solidarity, integrity, respect, passion and discipline around the world. RWC 2019 Event Mark The RWC 2019 Event Mark will, for the first time, share, reflect and express the vision of the new World Rugby brand and forms part of the wider World Rugby family and portfolio of events. Represented within the distinctive shield is the rising sun above Mount Fuji, the first time a host country’s identity has been integrated into a Rugby World Cup logo itself. Tournament Look RWC 2019 will be an opportunity to not only showcase the very best of Japan’s rich culture, traditions and heritage, but also a chance to showcase the country’s cutting edge innovation and creativity. The RWC 2019 tournament look and feel has been developed to reflect this juxtaposition of old and new, using traditional byōbu screens which simulate the six sections of a rugby pitch. Within each panel traditional Japanese patterns blend with modern rugby influences and motifs creating a dynamic and versatile graphic system. At the centre of the design, the morning sun conveys Japan at the heart of the rugby world in 2019, whilst the mizuhiki knot, a traditional symbol of Unity in Japan, represents the multiple facets of the rugby world coming together to celebrate the pinnacle of the sport on, and off, the pitch. All of these elements combine to showcase the brand positioning of The World in Union. POOL DRAW I MEDIA GUIDE 9
