MESSAGE FROM THE CEO The 2018/19 season will be a historic one for professional squash as we embark on a new era with a restructured tour, while we’re also excited to witness the sport’s first ever million- dollar tournament, which will be held in February when the PSA World Championships comes to Chicago. The new season will follow off the back of one of the most thrilling campaigns that professional squash has ever seen, with history being made at the very first World Series tournament of the season, the U.S. Open, when Ali Farag and Nour El Tayeb become the first married couple in sporting history ever to win the same major sports title on the same day. Egypt’s reputation as a squash powerhouse continued to grow from that point onwards as the AJ Bell PSA World Championships in Manchester saw Mohamed ElShorbagy and Raneem El Welily claim the coveted trophies in what was the first World Championships to offer equal prize money for men and women. The PSA’s commitment to offering equal opportunities for both men and women was also evident in the inaugural Saudi Masters tournament in January, which was the first professional women’s squash tournament ever to take place in Saudi Arabia.
The season also played hosts to some exciting twists and turns. Simon Rösner became the first German player to win a World Series tournament after he claimed the honours at the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions, while few could have predicted the incredible resurgence of Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the unseeded Colombian who came from out of the blue to win the prestigious Allam British Open trophy in May. The next 10 months are set to be even more exciting and unpredictable and our new tour structure for professional squash will help to streamline the sport and increase earning potential for our world-class athletes while helping us to market the sport in greater depth than ever before. The PSA World Tour will still be home to the world’s biggest tournaments taking place in some of the most picturesque and
iconic sporting locations in the world, while the creation of the PSA Challenger Tour means that there is now a platform for the sport’s most exciting rising talents to test themselves against some of squash’s most experienced professionals. We are also delighted to expand on our relationship with the World Squash Federation, which has enabled us to create the WSF & PSA Satellite Tour as we look to help up-and-coming players make their way onto the professional circuit. Away from the court, the sport has continued to grow at pace, with a record amount of prize money on offer during the 2017/18
season. Prize money has increased to $6.4 million, which is an 11% increase compared to the previous season, while the pay gap between men and women is at its lowest ever, with the gap dropping by 32% over the past year. Our SQUASHTV streaming service also continues to go from strength to strength with over 2 million views across our live and on-demand content, while our partnerships with major broadcasters across the world mean that more people are watching squash than ever before. We believe that the 2018/19 season has the potential to be the most captivating season that professional squash has ever seen and look forward to watching the drama unfold over the next 10 months. Kind Regards, Alex Gough PSA Chief Executive Officer

AN INTRODUCTION TO SQUASH Squash is a fast-moving game that requires skill, speed and supreme fitness. The ball can reach speeds of up to 170mph (274kmh) and players can burn off up to 1000 calories per hour of squash - higher than most other sports. HISTORY Harrow School in England is often credited as the birthplace of modern day squash, when the young schoolboys developed their own progression of the game ‘rackets’. In the early eighteenth century, prisoners at the Fleet, London’s notorious debtor’s gaol, created an outdoor version of tennis - called rackets, and it involved no more than smacking a ball, similar to a golf ball, against one or two walls using a stretched tennis bat. Accompanying rackets was another socially-lubricated ball and wall game called fives. Named for the five fingers of the hand, this ancient version of handball was more or less the game of
rackets without the racket. Many men played both sports in the same court. Fives grew so popular at English public schools that the two leading forms of the game derived their standards entirely from the quirky spots on campus where the boys played In 1850, Harrow built two open-air rackets courts. With its long, heavy bat and bullet-hard ball, rackets was difficult for an inexperienced boy to learn. Rubber had just come into use and Harrow boys grabbed a rubber ball, sawed off the butt of their racquets and played a slower, easier game in their house yards. This version of racquets was called “baby rackets” or “soft rackets” or “softer.” On 20 January 1865 Harrow officially opened a new complex of rackets and fives courts and the boys jumped on and played their new game of baby rackets. And this game became the game of squash.
THE COURT The squash court is a playing surface measuring 9.75m long and 6.4m wide, surrounded by four walls which are normally made out of plaster (traditional court) or glass (all-glass court) with a wooden floor. All four walls of a squash court are included in the playing area and players can use all walls to play their shots - so long as the ball makes contact with the front wall during each shot. The front wall, on which three parallel lines are marked, has the largest playing surface, whilst the back wall, which typically contains the entrance to the court, has the smallest. The ‘out’ line runs along the top of the front wall, descending along the side walls to the back wall - unlike in tennis, a ball that touches the line is deemed to be ‘out’. The middle line of the front wall is the service line and is only relevant during serves.
The court floor contains a front line separating the front and back of the court and a half court line, separating the left and right hand sides of the back portion of the court, creating three ‘boxes’: the front half, the back left quarter and the back right quarter. Both of the back two boxes contain smaller service boxes. The floor-markings on a squash court are only relevant during serves.
PLAYING THE GAME SCORING All PSA World Tour matches, across both men’s and women’s competitions, are played using a best of five games format. Each game is played with ‘point a rally’ scoring to 11 (PAR 11). If the score in a game is tied at 10-10, play continues until a player wins by 2 clear points. SCORING A POINT In PAR scoring, the winner of a rally always receives a point, regardless of whether they were the server or returner. A point is earned when the opponent either; fails to play a shot before the ball bounces for a second time (double-bounce), hits the ball on or above the marked ‘out lines’ or hits the ‘tin’ - the hard strip on the front wall which acts similar to the net in tennis. The tin - which is 17” tall for PSA events - is normally made of metal and produces a hollow sound when hit to indicate to the players and referee when a shot is down.
Points can also be won or lost when a physical obstruction occurs on the court between two players - see the ‘Let, No Let and Stroke’ explanation below. INTERFERENCE - LET, NO LET AND STROKE After completing a reasonable follow-through after playing a shot, players must make every effort to ‘clear the ball’ so that when the ball rebounds from the front wall the opponent has a fair view of the ball, unobstructed access to the ball with both the space to make a reasonable swing at the ball and the freedom to strike the ball to any part of the entire front wall. Interference occurs when the player doesn‘t provide the opponent with all of these requirements. A striker who believes that interference has occurred may stop and request a ‘Let’ at which point the referee must make a ruling, awarding either a ‘Let’, ‘No let’ or ‘Stroke’. A ‘Let’ is where the rally is played again - with the referee deeming that the interference was accidental or if the officials are undecided.
A ‘No Let’ is where the referee rules against the appeal of the striker and awards a point to the retreating player. In this situation the referee is deeming that the retreating player provided unobstructed access and that interference was minimal, therefore the appealing striker could have played a shot. A ‘Stroke’ is when the point is awarded to the appealing player. A stroke is awarded when the referee deems the incoming striker is in position to play a shot but suffers interference due to the outgoing player not making every effort to clear. PLAY The players spin a racket to decide who serves first - choosing which way up the racket will land, similar to a coin toss. Player One starts the first rally by electing to serve from either the left or right service box. For a legal serve, one of the server’s feet must be inside the service box, not touching any part of the service box lines, as the player strikes the ball. After being struck by the racket, the ball must strike the front wall above the service line and below the ‘out’ line and land in the opposite back quarter court. The receiving player can choose to volley a serve after it has hit the front wall. If the server wins the point, the two players switch sides for the following serve. If the receiver wins the point, they may then choose which service box they serve from to begin the next point. After the serve, the players take turns hitting the ball against the front wall, above the tin and below the out lines.
The ball may strike the side or back walls at any time, as long as it hits below the ‘out’ line. It must not hit the floor after hitting the racket and before hitting the front wall. A ball landing on either the out line or the line along the top of the tin is considered to be out. After the ball hits the front wall, it is allowed to bounce once on the floor (and any number of times against the side or back walls) before a player must return it. Players may move anywhere around the court but accidental or deliberate obstruction of the other player’s movements is forbidden. Players typically return to the centre of the court (known as the ‘T’ due to the floor markings) after making a shot.
DID YOU KNOW In 1912, the RMS Titanic had a squash court in first class. The First-Class Squash Court was situated on G-Deck and the Spectators Viewing Gallery was on the deck above on F-Deck. Squash is played today by more than 20 million people (1.7 million in the United States), and there are nearly 50,000 courts around the world in 185 countries. Squash has been voted the healthiest sport to play by Forbes magazine based on cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, calories burned (an hour of squash can burn 600-1000 calories), and risk of injury. According to biometric data captured at PSA World Tour events in Chicago, Sweden and Zurich, the ball is in play 63 per cent of the time for an average of 33 minutes – a figure that pushes squash towards the very top of the relative time-in-play tables. Prince Philip played squash while Queen Elizabeth II was in labour (for 30 hours) giving birth to Prince Charles.
