From the Desk of Girl Scouts Nation's Capital CEO Dear Girl Scout Families, Since 1916, Girl Scouts has been recognizing girls who have created sustainable, positive change in their communities and world. In 1981, our highest award became known as the Gold Award. Gold Award Girl Scouts create a lasting legacy of community service. Their projects often reflect issues that they have discovered through their Girl Scout journey; from protecting our environment, to projects that encourage inclusion and diversity. Gold Award Girl Scouts demonstrate leadership, raise their voices and take action. When can Girl Scouts go for the Gold? Every step of a Girl Scout's experience prepares her for the Gold Award. When she reaches high school she can start her Gold Award project. She needs to be registered as a Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador and complete two Senior or Ambassador Journeys; or have earned the Girl Scout Silver Award and completed one Senior or Ambassador Journey. Her project should be something she feels passionate about and is girl-led. How is the Gold Award recognized? The Gold Award is recognized by colleges, universities, the military and employers. Many colleges give scholarships specifically to Gold Award Girl Scouts, or scholarships that reward a Girl Scout's community service. For many Girl Scouts, the Gold Award is their college essay! Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital recognizes the incredible achievement of graduating high school seniors, by awarding a minimum of ten Gold Award scholarships annually. Girl Scouts of the USA also recognizes ten National Gold Award Girl Scouts across the nation. By solving society’s grand challenges, Gold Award Girl Scouts make the world a better place. Not to mention the personal satisfaction and confidence girls’ gain by taking on an issue, forming a team and leading a project. Learn about other Gold Award projects in our Gold Award Yearbook available on our webiste, gscnc.org. And read the stories of our Gold Award alumna on the next page. Sincerely, Lidia Soto-Harmon Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts Nation's Capital 1 Identify an issue. "Girl Scouting rises within you, and inspires you to put forth your best." -Juliette Gordon Low Being a Gold Award Girl Scout is an achievement that I am extremely proud of and proclaim at every opportunity. It may have been the first time that I realized, "Diane Tipton could accomplish anything she set her mind to." Earning my Gold Award taught me to set my own goals, follow my passion and just do it! My Dad was a Boy Scout leader who pinned many an Eagle award on his boys. Now my Dad had the opportunity to watch me get my Gold Award and my brother was going to be there too! It was a proud moment for my entire family. The world should know that our Gold Award Girl Scouts have done more than just earn badges to achieve the highest recognition in Girl Scouting. They have done more than check off a list of items and volunteered hours for a community Service project. They have created a community-building project; designed a plan, created the methodology for funding, presented the plan to a committee for approval Diane Tipton and ultimately implemented the project. Our Gold Award Girl Scouts have done the equivalent of a Former Board President, Shark Tank presentation, or MBA case study that benefits their community. Owner, Self Storage Zone My tip to any Gold Award Girl Scout is to wear it loud and proud. It should be highlighted in your college application, post graduate applications and resumes for the rest of your life. It is and will always be well recognized as an amazing achievement. Earning the Gold Award meant that I had proven myself capable of designing and implementing a significant task on my own. I combined areas of interest in my life with giving something tangible back to my local community. I did in-depth work on fire service, fire safety and education. It was the culmination of my 10 years spent as a Girl Scout. I completed my project in fall of 2009, and now, nearly 10 years later, I am still actively involved in the fire service. I also got a significant amount of self-confidence from earning my Gold Award. As I reflect on my project, I am amazed by how much I was able to do and how I had made a real difference in the lives of people in my community. I hit roadblocks along the way, but I was determined to finish and see this project to the end. In so doing, I learned about leadership. The Gold Award is a significant achievement! Today, I'm a physician and I still proudly list the Girl Scout Gold Award on my CV. Dr. Meghan Quinn, Lieutenant Medical Corps, United States Navy The Girl Scout Gold Award is earned. You must have the ability to see a problem and envision a solution by creating a plan and taking the lead to see that plan come to life. Girl Scouts who’ve earned the Gold Award have proven that they know how to make a difference in the world. I implemented and coordinated Girls Today Leaders Tomorrow, a luncheon and panel discussion designed to help girls visualize themselves in elected office. Local elected female officials spoke and I had exhibits from organizations that help prepare women to run for office. The coolest outcome of earning the Gold Award is that it helped me decide what career field to explore. I selected a university that offered a Policy Studies degree. Now as a first-year college student, my on-campus job is with the Pennsylvania Center of Women and Politics at Chatham University. My advice to Gold Award Girl Scouts, always, talk about your Gold Award. It’s an accomplishment very few can say they’ve done. Put it at the top of your resume and include it in your college and Lalah Williams scholarship essays. Of the scholarships I’ve been awarded, three are directly the result of the Gold Award. Freshman, Chatham University Being a Gold Award Girl Scout speaks to a higher commitment and level of responsibility. It put me on a path to serve others. This accomplishment also speaks to the many women who invested in me and in my growth. It is the manifestation of what sisterhood looks like. Earning the Gold Award is an incredible opportunity for young women to build their leadership and confidence-- arguably the most important soft skills they can take into adulthood. The Gold Award gave me a sense of empowerment that I can help to create a better world. The problems in our communities and the challenges we face are merely because not enough of us have acted in the ways the Gold Award process showed me are possible. The Gold Award is much more than an accolade, it's the opportunity to rethink one's worldview. It leads young women to partake in a journey for change that every citizen ought to experience. Generations of young diverse women cannot build a sisterhood alone, they need Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts has shown me the value of investing in others like so many invested in me-- even Abar Omeish Yale University, when it’s hard, inconvenient, or costly. Council Updates Robotics Our Council has been developing new ideas for girls to learn the basics of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) while staying safe and having fun! We have two brand-new robotics resources premiering this year. Robotics Workshops for Ambassadors Deloitte partnered with Girl Scouts to introduce how STEM focused fields translate into everyday activities. As an inaugural event, Deloitte invites Girl Scout Ambassadors to join them for a robotics workshop. This workshop is aimed at girls seeking to learn more about the design thinking process and the steps that are involved in building a prototype as they work on the Designing Robots badge. Attendees will be given an opportunity to work alongside professionals within the robotics field who strive to bring together science and technology in innovative ways. The workshop will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the Deloitte headquarters building in Arlington, VA. Two sessions are available – a morning session and an afternoon session. Cost is $5 per girl and includes a snack. For more information and to register for this event, please visit the Program Events Calendar at gscnc.org/ calendar. Deloitte looks forward to hosting this event and exploring the many ways robotics can make our world more efficient! Check Out a New Robotics Kit! Our new robotics kits make Girl Scouting easier for new leaders and those who have been in Girl Scouting for many years. These kits are designed to aid in earning some of the new Robotics badges at the Brownie through Ambassador levels, by enhancing the Girl Scout Leadership Experience through hands-on activities. Each kit contains directions along with resources and the non-consumable items needed to complete the activities. Program kits can be requested and picked up at a Council office near you.
