About Us Ilkley Playhouse has a far-reaching reputation as an independent community theatre that offers a varied programme of high-quality productions for audiences of all ages and interests. Based in our own theatre on the banks of the River Wharfe, Ilkley Playhouse is one of the key players in Ilkley’s thriving community arts scene. Every year we stage a season of around 12 plays, from modern dramas and comedies to musicals and classics of British and world theatre. We perform in our own 145 seat Wharfeside Theatre and our flexible Wildman Studio where we often present more cutting-edge fringe productions. We also provide a performance venue for touring theatre companies, musicians, comedians, writers, singers and a range of other arts-related events, including the annual Ilkley Literature Festival. Everyone is welcome to get involved. By becoming a Playhouse member, you can take part in everything from acting and directing to lighting, stage management, front of house, set design and costume. We also deliver theatre training sessions at our Saturday morning ‘Greenroom’ youth classes. Towards Our Centenary Since its launch in 1928 by a small group of enthusiastic local people, Ilkley Playhouse has grown and transformed over the decades. Early productions by the Ilkley Players were put on in St Margaret’s Hall; later they were performed in the King’s Hall until finally in 1938, the Ilkley Players moved into the storeroom of the Liberal Club on Weston Road. Those humble premises were the beginnings of the two theatres, bar, coffee bar, extensive backstage area and wardrobe that visitors know today. By 1960 the Ilkley Players were able to buy the whole building and with huge membership support and a substantial lottery grant, the refurbished and extended building was opened in 1999. Ilkley Playhouse is determined to be an open, inclusive and welcoming community-based space for everyone and aims to continue presenting diverse, challenging, entertaining and important plays and events for many more decades to come. 3
