INTERVIEW polymerandpackaging.com AN INTERVIEW WITH MR. SAADAT EIJAZ QUREISHI DIRECTOR OF ROSHAN PACKAGES Q: Pakistan is going through a socio economic change. Consumer preferences are changing so is the requirements of food packaging. In this context, what should be the forward strategy of packaging industry of Pakistan? A: Yes it is true. Packaging demands are changing in Pakistan mainly due to the fact that people now prefers packaged food and beverages for longer shelf life, safety and hygiene purposes; on the go and eating out with families and friends trend is most popular. It will be interesting for you to know that consumer spending a few years back was at 27 Billion rupees per annum. Now it has increased to 34.8 Billion rupees. FMCG sector growth is in double digits. This is a very ideal scenario for new investments but sometimes, it happens that booming sectors attract more than needed investments resulting in excess availability of products and services. This disturbs the supply/demand parity and profit ratios start declining. This is what exactly happening in Pakistan right now. Very soon you will see that industry will start taking corrections. Unorganized sector which is 45% of the industry will be badly affected. In the organized sector of 50% those who have invested in latest and hi tech machinery, research, innovation, training for skilled labor will survive and grow. Others will have no choice but to follow the leaders in order to survive in the market. Q: What is the role of Government of Pakistan in all this? A: Government of Pakistan needs to rationalize taxes and duties between the importers and manufacturers of packaging industry. Interestingly, 5% importers Roshan Packages is a part of Roshan Group have to pay less for importing printed packaging local which began its operations in 1959 with manufacturers have to pay more duties to import the launch of URDU DIGEST. In 2012 we entered into flexible packaging business and set up a state of the art packaging facility near Lahore. In 2015, we doubled the production capacity of corrugated cartons from 30,000 MT to 60,000MT and in the same year, we increased the production capacity of our flexible packaging unit from 10,800 Tons to 12,240 Tons per annum. The idea of setting up a paper mill was discussed and finalized between us but in order to achieve optimum quality and production sustainability we needed a strong partner with vast experience and expertise of installing and running a paper mill in a joint venture. After much deliberation, we finalized Sun Tao china thus Roshan Sun Tao came into being. On the financial side, Roshan Group has performed well. TECHNOLOGY UPDATE polymerandpackaging.com Work – Life Lessons From STEPHEN HAWKING Stephen Hawking was one of the brightest stars of science. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world. Prof. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology as a union of relativity and quantum mechanics. He also discovered that black holes leak energy and fade to nothing - a phenomenon that would later become known as Hawking radiation. As the world mourns the loss of Stephen Hawking, one of the prominent physicists, cosmologists & authors of our time, who passed away on March 14th 2018, let us reflect on what we can learn from his life. QUESTION RELENTLESSLY “I am just a child who has never grown up. I still keep asking HOW & WHY questions. Occasionally, I find an answer” Hawking’s words remind us to remain curious. He was of the view that we can discover the answers to our questions by constantly searching for them. Therefore, in order to be successful, remember to repeatedly question what you are doing, and find new ways to improve yourself and your work. NEVER GIVE UP Hawking served as a prime example of someone who never gave up. He was told by his doctor that he has two and a half years to live, and in the nearly five decades after that, he accomplished so much despite being confined to a wheelchair due to the fact that he suffered from ALS, a motor neuron disease. Therefore, never lose sight of the belief that solutions do exist, no matter how difficult obstacles you face at work or in your personal life. COMMUNICATE SIMPLE Despite its complex subject matter, Hawking’s A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME has been read so far and wide because he has made it so clear and comprehensible. Had he not simplified the content and managed to communicate his concepts so simply, the information in his mind would never have reached such a wide audience. BE AMBITIOUS Hawking said” My goal is simple. It is the complete understanding of the universe… and why it exists at all. Although it is wise to set achievable goals, thinking big, being ambitious and setting even higher goals that may seem unachievable can drive you to accomplish them. Needless to say, Professor Hawking will be always remembered for his extraordinary role in propagating determination, positivity and love of life. 24
TECHNOLOGY UPDATE polymerandpackaging.com Future of 3D Printing in AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY The automotive sector has been the biggest beneficiary of the development, growth & improvements in 3D printing systems & the additive manufacturing industry over the recent years. Most of the automobile manufacturers are now using FDM TECHNOLGY as standard for rapid prototype manufacturing of all kinds of parts from interior to crucial engine components and more advanced techniques like SLS 3D printing are increasingly being implemented for final phase production as well as concepts. At a recent motor show held in New York, industry professionals discussed these developments and explained how design engineers are adopting techniques being transformed by 3D printing. “We can do things now which were not possible before we had 3D printing,” said Head of Design MINI, Oliver Heilmer at a conference. Now we can design entire door panel in piece will be lighter when manufactured by 3D printing. We are now able to change the look & feel at any point even after the manufacturing begins without the help of new tools to make it. Before this, it would take more than an year to make the change happen. Besides the door, the center wheel locks for the car were also produced by using 3D printing technology, and there are various other 3D printed parts. One of the key benefit of implementing the technology is that direct manufacturing is possible from a digital model enabling a higher degree of precision & complexity in terms of geometry. This is a great advantage in terms of functionality , as engineers can create the most efficient structures to optimize comfort & performance of the vehicle. 3D printing technology also eliminates major limitations like the ones placed on design freedom by production capacity. In the past, when designing a component, a designer would need to take into account not just geometries & materials but also specific tooling methods available. What tools were used to produce the part would have a serious impact on its quality even affect the possibility of making it, and this could often hold designers back. With 3D printing, almost anything that can be designed can be realized, and the range of material properties continues to expand. It is said that the open-source natures of 3D printing will also change the way that individual car owners relate to their car. The technology allows for high level of personalization & customization, enabling users to directly get involved in the design process. “There is an emotional aspect behind 3D printing. It allows freedom to bond with your car” says Heilmer. STARBUCKS Developing Next-Generation Recyclable & Compostable Cup Starbucks Corp. is pledging millions of dollars, and partnering with a well-known recycling organization, to try to solve its cup problem. The coffee giant faced challenges in the past over the recyclability of its paper cups that are lined with polyethylene. The company also serves cold drinks in plastic cups. STARBUCKS recently announced that it will commit $10 million to the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners to find a global end-to-end solution that would allow cups around the world to be diverted from landfills. Starbucks, meanwhile, also said the company is currently working on a new “bio-liner” made from plant-based materials for the company’s paper cups. Talking about the NEXTGEN CHALLENGE, company spokesman said the Challenge will enable leading innovators and entrepreneurs with financial, technical, and expert resources to fast-track global solutions, help get those solutions to shelf, through the recovery system and back into the supply chain. 25
