The International Erasmus Erasmus University Institute for Institute of Social Rotterdam Social Studies Studies (ISS) is based in The Hague and forms part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. ISS is an international graduate school of policy- oriented critical social science, with a broad diversity in students and teachers. ISS is research led and teaching driven. Established in 1952 by Dutch universities and the Netherlands Ministry of Education, in 2010 ISS became part of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). In 2013, EUR celebrated its 100-year anniversary. The PhD programme at ISS is a four-year doctoral programme. More than 100 students are currently enrolled, supervised by a multidisciplinary faculty. The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) was established in 1922, including a School of Law and is now internationally recognised as an institution of excellence. The University’s policy of non-discrimination, on racial or any other grounds was severely tested when the apartheid-government forbid the enrolment of non-white students in 1959. The Wits academic and student community protested strongly and continued to maintain a consistent and vigorous stand against apartheid, in education, and in all its manifestations. With the dismantling of apartheid and the election of a democratic government, the role of Wits as a resource has become increasingly important: staff members and researchers are approached on a daily basis by the media, commerce and industry to give their expert knowledge and opinion on a wide variety of topics. WITS TODAY – Changing tomorrow Involved staff Dr. Jeff Handmaker (academic co-ordinator ISS); Dr. Ntombizozuko (Zozo) Dyani-Mhango (academic co-ordinator Wits law). In addition, various other faculty members will participate, depending on the topic. These include from ISS: Prof. Karin Arts, Prof. Des Gasper, Prof. Irene van Staveren, Prof. Peter Knorringa and Dr. Karim Knio. And from Wits law: Prof. Jonathan Klaaren, Prof. Cathi Albertyn, Dr. Bonita Meyersfeld and Dr. Lilian Chenwi.
