Liputan Akhbar Januari - Disember 2012 Institut Penyelidikan Perhutanan Malaysia / Forest Research Institute Malaysia Utusan Malaysia Tanam pokok tempatan di benua Antartika 18/01/2011 FRIM akan menubuhkan Tabung Amanah Antartika bagi menarik saintis Page : 20 tempatan menjalankan kajian di Antartika. Tabung ini menurut Ketua Pengarah FRIM akan dapat menampung kos penyelidikan saintis tempatan di situ. Bagi FRIM, ia akan cuba menjalankan kajian biji benih yang sukar hidup di bumi dan mengkaji kesan mineral ke atas pertumbuhan pokok seperti cengal dan tumbuhan ubatan. Utusan Malaysia Antartika bank biji benih semula jadi 30/01/2012 FRIM pada masa ini menjalankan kajian dan pemuliharaan biji benih Page : Mega 8 spesies balak terancam secara tiruan menggunakan cecair hidrogen tetapi masih tidak dapat bertahan lama. Penglibatan penyelidikan di benua Antartika memberi peluang kepada FRIM untuk mengkaji penyimpanan biji benih secara semula jadi. Menurut Ketua Pengarah FRIM, spesies flora yang memiliki ciri istimewa dan pelbagai guna akan menjadi calon utama kajian ini jika berjaya dilaksanakan. Setakat ini 62 ekspedisi saintifik yang telah dibuat oleh Malaysia hanya melibatkan penyelidik dari IPT. Bagi merealisasikan impian FRIM menjalankan penyelidikan di Antartika, FRIM menubuhkan Tabung Amanah Antartika dengan permulaan RM500,000. Malaysia menyertai Triti Antartika 1959 pada 31 Oktober 2011. Utusan Malaysia MSA cabaran untuk saintis tempatan 30/01/2012 Akademi Sains Malaysia (MSA) memperkenal anugerah bagi mengiktiraf Page : Mega 2-3 penyelidik dan institusi di kawasan tropika yang banyak menyumbang kepada penyelesaian masalah masyarakat. Anugerah Sains Mahathir yang mula diperkenal pada tahun 2005 dianggap dapat mendorong saintis/institusi menjalankan penyelidikan bagi mengatasi masalah sejagat. Setakat ini sebanyak enam anugerah telah diberikan termasuk empat penerima luar negara. Malaysia belum ada pemenang individu tetapi Fakulti Perubatan UM (2006) dan FRIM (2009) telah memenangi anugerah tersebut sebagai pemenang institusi. Pemenang menerima hadiah wang tunai RM100,000 dan nilai ini dijangka ditingkatkan kepada RM600,000. MSA merupakan badan yang menaungi saintis, jurutera dan diamanahkan oleh Yayasan Anugerah Sains Mahathir untuk menggerakkan pemilihan pemenang. 1|Muka Surat
Utusan Malaysia FRIM diiktiraf antarabangsa 06/02/2012 FRIM menerima Anugerah Antarabangsa Socrates bagi hadiah cemerlang Page : Mega 12 dalam pencapaian saintifik dan penyelidikan gunaan 2011 daripada European Business Assembly. Ketua Pengarah – Dato’ Dr Abdul Latif Mohmod – turut menerima Anugerah Antarabangsa Socrates bagi pengurus dalam pencapaian saintifik dan penyelidikan gunaan. Anugerah-anugerah ini merupakan yang pertama buat Malaysia. FRIM terpilih menerima anugerah tersebut berdasarkan kemampuan, kecemerlangan, pencapaian dan profesionalisme dalam aktiviti penyelidikan dan pembangunan perhutanan dan hasil hutan tropika. Anugerah Pengurus pula diterima atas kegigihan mengubah sistem dan tradisi kerja kepada transformasi sistem penyampaian penyelidikan dan profesionalisme. Terdahulu, FRIM turut menerima Anugerah Jenama Selebriti untuk kategori Pendidikan Selebriti 2011 bagi jenama terbaik dalam bidang perhutanan dan pemuliharaan alam sekitar. Antara anugerah lain yang turut diterima ialah APECP untuk destinasi pendidikan alam sekitar yang mesra kanak-kanak, Nikkei Asia Award dan Anugerah Sains Mahathir. Star Tapping biomass to the max 11/02/2012 FRIM carried out basic research on oil palm biomass in the 1980’s Page : Special according to Dr Wan Asma Ibrahim which focussed primarily on the use of Focus 16-17 oil palm biomass as alternative for the wood-based industries. FRIM now concentrates on the availability, characterisation and utilisation of waste palm tree biomass, development of bioethanol production from trunk sap, and development of palm wood products (plywood, flooring, panel and furniture). Utusan Malaysia FRIM terima anugerah buku terbaik 13/02/2012 FRIM memenangi Anugerah Buku Negara kategori Buku Teknikal Terbaik Page : Mega 12 buat kali kedua melalui buku Wild Orchids of Peninsular Malaysia. Kali pertama FRIM memenangi anugerah untuk kategori yang sama ialah pada tahun 2011. Buku tersebut komprehensif dan padat dengan pelbagai gambar orkid liar yang terdapat di hutan Malaysia, dan dikarang oleh Ong PT, P O’Byrne, Wendy Yong dan Saw LG. Star A protection fee 21/02/2012 A survey conducted by FRIM as part of the Conservation of Biological Page : Ecowatch 6 Diversity through Improved Forest Planning Tools Project (CBioD Project) revealed that 91 percent of 1,300 households in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor interviewed are willing to pay RM4 to protect the Belum- Temenggor forest against logging and RM3 against poaching. The Project also studies the recreational use and watershed values of the forest area. Data collected will be used to develop tools for the economic valuation of goods and services of the forests. 2|Muka Surat
New Straits Times FRIM buffer zone under threat 09/03/2012 A five-metre strip of land between FRIM and neighbouring residential and Page : 5 industrial areas is under threat of encroachment that will affect the biodiversity of the area. Dato’ Dr Abdul Latif hope that the local authorities be aware of the buffer zone when approving house extensions and development projects. Domestic wastes were dumped indiscriminately into the fenced-up buffer zone. Open fires near FRIM and pollution of the water catchment area are other issues that worry FRIM. The forest at FRIM absorbs and recycles carbon dioxide produced by more than three quarter million people every year, and fires could interfere with the carbon system. New Straits Times FRIM ranks high in global list 25/03/2012 FRIM was listed 546th out of 4,000 research institutes in the world, ranked Page : 25 by the Spanish National Research Council Report (CSIC). It ranked 813 th in 2010 and the ranking was based on several aspects such as research and articles issued by FRIM. FRIM was also awarded certificates from The Malaysia Book of Records for the following: oldest wood sample, largest collection of wood sample, techniques for planting mangrove trees, longest rotan manau, DNA fingerprinting database for trees and disabled-friendly nature trail. Star FRIM DG recognised for outstanding distribution 19/04/2012 FRIM DG was awarded Rotary Research Gold Medal Award by the Rotary Page : News 6 Research Foundation of the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja. The award was in recognition of Dato’ Dr Abdul Latif’s outstanding research and development contributions to forestry science. Dr Abdul Latif produced 50 inventions on the processing of rattan, bamboo and palm, 300 publications and received numerous prestigious awards, nationally and internationally. 3|Muka Surat
New Straits Times Putrajaya in good trim with FRIM 19/04/2012 FRIM enters a five-year smart partnership programme with Putrajaya Page : 2 Corporation (PPJ) to oversee Putrajaya’s landscape and greenery. The project will keep track of and tend to trees – estimated at 650,000 – online (through plant inventory and management system SIPP)), to improve the landscape. PPJ and FRIM will conduct courses, seminars and conferences on landscaping, urban forest and related topics under the project. Star Green effort by companies: project sees 25 cengal trees planted at Bukit Hari 28/04/2012 Twenty five cengal trees were planted at Bukit Hari, FRIM by the Page : Events 24 committee members of 25th World Gas Conference, International Gas Union and Malaysia Gas Association as part of the ‘Lets Meet and Green’ project to support the government’s vision to offset 40% of carbon emmissions by 2020. FRIM planted 2,400 trees in 2011 with contributions of over RM150,000 from various corporations. Fifthy Shorea roxburghii (meranti temak nipis) were planted as part of Accors’ business strategy worldwide, Planet 21. Since 2008, Accors has planted more than two million trees worldwide and introduced several initiatives to conserve energy consumption. Star Taking trees online: FRIM aims to digitally document all its assets to share with the world 16/05/2012 A project to digitally document all trees and interesting features in FRIM Page : Business will take place through Digital FRIM. The project is part of FRIM effort to 22-24 compile and document its flora, fauna and other living and non-living assets. The project will allow retrieval and viewing of tree species, size, flowering and fruiting patterns, and its uses digitally. It will create a real time, accessible virtual FRIM. The data collected through the system can also be used for the conservation and sustainable management of resources, monitoring and preventing illegal logging, and promoting carbon stock trading. FRIM is working towards achieving a UNESCO World Heritage Site status by 2015, and this system is expected to greatly speed up the effort. The project is a collaborative venture between FRIM and Cube Global. Utusan Malaysia Projek FRIM digital 21/05/2012 FRIM menandatangani perjanjian persefahaman dengan Cube Global bagi Page : 4 mendigital semua pokok dan tarikan yang terdapat di FRIM untuk membolehkan pengurusan dan pemuliharaan sumber semula jadinya lebih cekap dan dapat dikongsi dengan orang ramai. Ia juga akan membolehkan spesies pokok, saiz, ciri pembungaan dan pembuahan, kegunaan dan ciri- ciri hutan didokumen dalam bentuk yang mudah diakses. Projek ini juga akan mewujudkan Virtual FRIM yang boleh dihubung secara global dan sejajar dengan Pelan Induk Digital Malaysia. Utusan Malaysia Mengurus, mengekalkan hutan bakau 21/05/2012 Antara peranan hutan bakau ialah sebagai zon penampan ancaman ribut, Page : Mega 2 ombak kuat dan hakisan. Penanaman semula bakau dengan teknologi yang diiktiraf amat perlu untuk membolehkan bakau berfungsi sebagai benteng penahan ombak. Menurut Dr Shamsuddin Ibrahim, FRIM telah memperkenalkan beberapa kaedah seperti geotiub, ‘comp-mat’, ‘comp- pillow’ dan ‘bamboo encasement method’ (BEM). 5|Muka Surat
Utusan Malaysia Kajian DNA balak 21/05/2012 FRIM telah mengenal pasti 480 spesies balak untuk dibangun dan Page : 4 dikomersial menerusi kajian kod bar yang dimulakan pada tahun 2004. Kajian tersebut mengenal pasti anatomi pokok serta identiti spesies di peringkat tertentu. Selain menyokong perkembangan industri balak, ia juga dijangka dapat membantu usaha mencegah pembalakan haram. Kajian diperluas dengan pangkalan data DNA balak yang dapat menentukan ketulenan pengeluaran produk balak dan meningkatkan harga di pasaran. FRIM telah mempunyai pangkalan data lengkap DNA untuk ramin, cengal, meranti dan kempas bukit. Sebanyak 204 DNA spesies balak dikumpul oleh FRIM setakat ini. Utusan Malaysia Pantau maklumat bakau 21/05/2012 FRIM menggunakan teknologi penderiaan jarak jauh untuk memantau Page : 3 hutan bakau. Kajian sedang dijalankan untuk menilai tebangan optimum yang boleh dibuat tanpa memberi kesan kepada ekosistem bakau serta menilai jumlah karbon dalam hutan bakau. FRIM juga sedang merangka untuk mewujudkan pemantauan, pelaporan dan pemverifikasian untuk hutan bakau. Kajian tanam semula bakau di Sg Dorani yang melibatkan NRE, FRIM dan JPSM merupakan model untuk zon penampan kawasan pesisiran pantai. Sebanyak RM1.8 juta telah diperuntukkan oleh Kementerian untuk tempoh lima tahun. New Straits Times Seeds of innovation 04/06/2012 Starting her career as a forest scientist in FRIM requires Dato’ Dr Marzalina Page : 9 to spend most of her time in the forests collecting seeds. In the course of her work, she develops seed dewinging machine, storage chamber and mobile chamber for seed and seedlings, and artifial seeds. She now works on developing artificial lumber from oil palm trunk, bamboo and juvenile acacia. According to her, the artificial lumber can save the natural forest, recycle waste materials, create jobs, and gives faster and increased returns from plantation. 6|Muka Surat

Bunga tersebut merupakan evolusi Rafflesia azlanii dan Rafflesia cantleyi disahkan yang pertama di dunia oleh FRIM. Bunga pakma tujuh kelopak turut ditemui di sini pada tahun 2011 dan enam kelopak di Sarawak. The new species could be a cross between R. cantleyi and R. azlani due to the nature of the combination of five larger and five smaller petals. New Straits Times Offer to help save land 04/07/2012 FRIM offers its expertise to help in rehabiliting idle plots and forests Page : 24 affected by development. In Bidor, Perak FRIM has successfully rehabilitated an ex-mining area in a 15-years duration. FRIM main campus itself has undergone reforestation in 1926 and is now a green lung and a renowned site for ecotourism. Berita Harian Ekspedisi jejak cendawan susu harimau 06/07/2012 Ekspedisi Saintifik Taman Negara Johor Endau Rompin ketiga meletakkan Page : 14-15 pencarian cendawan susu rimau yang mampu merawat barah sebagai antara spesies tumpuan. Cendawan tersebut menurut saintis FRIM, Thi Bee Kin telah digunakan oleh orang Asli Jakun dengan jaya untuk merawat barah payu darah. Sehingga kini, cendawan tersebut hanya ditemui di Taman Negara Royal Belum dan Taman Negara di Terengganu. Menurut Thi lagi, cendawan tersebut amat sukar ditemui dan dipercayai boleh juga mengubati lelah dan penyakit lain. 7|Muka Surat
New Straits Times FRIM head gets award for research 14/07/2012 Director-General of FRIM was one of 17 people to receive ‘The Name in Page : 20 Science’ award from the Europe Business Assembly (EBA) Socrates Nomination Committee, Club of Rectors Europe (CRE) and the International Club of Leaders (ICL) at a ceremony in Dublin, Ireland. The award is given to scientific teams and societies, public organisations, business structures, politicians and public figures for their contribution to scientific research. Dato’ Dr Abdul Latif received the award for his devotion to tropical forestry research and development. Ekspedisi sepuluh hari tersebut melibatkan 50 saintis tempatan dan luar negara dengan 12 kajian flora, fauna dan geologi. Star Bamboo doc can't wait to feed giant pandas 20/07/2012 China is loaning two pandas to Malaysia for ten years and a 20ha bamboo Page : nation 4 plantation in Raub initiated by FRIM is ready to feed them. The bamboo planted in Raub was part of the National Pilot Project on Bamboo to develop bamboo-growing industry. Dato’ Dr Abdul Latif Mohmod – DG of FRIM – stated that other than Raub, the bamboo will also be supplied from Putrajaya Wetlands and Paya Indah Wetlands. Pandas feed on the bamboo stalk, leaves and shoots. Star Due diligence through DNA 21/07/2012 Biodiversity International launched a Kuala Lumpur-based facility to Page : Ecowatch 3 improve the identification of timber species and their origin. The end product would be an international database featuring genetic and stable isotopes for 20 major commercial timbers. Fifty percent of wood exported from Southeast Asia, the Amazon, central Africa and Russia is suspected to be logged illegally. Technologies such as DNA fingerprinting and stable- isotyping might be some of the solutions that can identify the origin of such timber. In Malaysia, FRIM has undertaken studies to construct a DNA database profiling that were geared towards achieving similar objective. FRIM tersenarai di tempat ke-546 berbanding 4,000 institusi penyelidikan seluruh dunia oleh Majlis Penyelidikan Kebangsaan Sepanyol. FRIM juga diiktiraf sebagai Warisan Kebangsaan oleh Kementerian Penerangan, Komunikasi dan Kebudayaan. New Straits Times FRIM to ensure kiosks don't damage Lake Gardens 26/07/2012 FRIM sent an arborist to Taiping to assess the effect of constructing food, Page : Nation 3 handicraft and souvenir kiosks at the Taiping lake Gardens to safeguard the raintrees. FRIM will assist the Taiping Municipal Council to ensure that the kiosks are not constructed too close to the trees to prevent root damage. Star Decision on kiosks soon: Council to rule on Taiping Lake Gardens project on Monday 27/07/2012 FRIM recommended that any construction at the Taiping Lake Gardens Page : Nation 6 should be further away from the raintrees’ critical root zones. FRIM has submitted a report on minimising root damage if the proposed construction were to take place. FRIM advises the Taiping Municipal Council to engage an arborist before and during construction to ensure survival of the raintrees. Dr Lee Soon Leong and his 2-3 team of researchers at FRIM have been compiling a database of intergenic DNA markers for cengal, ramin melawis, kempas and red meranti. Some have been completed whilst others are still being identified. The data from this compilation would enable any DNA samples extracted from any piece of wood be used to cross-check the source of origin for the purpose of identifying illegally logged timber. The worldwide acknowledgement of teak as a superior timber for furniture and indoor application has resulted in the disappearance of old growth teak. The research station – established in 1974 – covers 455 ha with 71 varieties of teak clones from several countries, and has a nursery capable of producing 100,000 seedligs per year. Its breeding programme aims to produce improved planting materials which later be introduced to the planters. Malaysia has about 2,500 ha of teak plantations, mainly in Sabah and Sarawak. At present, foreign researchers are only required to inform the Government what they are taking out from the country. As the requirement is not legally binding, the enforcement of the Bill will be able to fight biopiracy. The Bill is expected to be tabled in the Parliament at its next session. Star Transforming wood residues to energy: mill wastes are used to feed biomass plants in Sarawak 06/08/2012 There are 14 biomass plants in Sarawak which supply energy for the Page : News 6 plywood mills. The plants utilised 1.1 million tonnes wood residues in 2011 that were generated from their own mills or smaller mills, and other wood processing factories. Sarawak boosts 45 plywood mills, 171 sawmills, 21 veneer mills and 34 dowel/moulding mills. 7,000 – 8,000 cu m plywood can generate wood residues that can produce between 3MW and 5MW of electricity. A 3MW capacity biomass plant costs between RM10 mil to RM15 mil to build, while a 5MW plant is between RM20 mil to RM30 mil. MPOB is focussing on turning oil palm biomass into marketable products. Malaysia targets 50:50 ratio of biomass to palm oil production by 2020 and the current ratio is 10:90. MPOB signed an MOU with National Kenaf and Tobacco Board (NKTB) and Dongwha Malaysia to encourage wealth creation through R&D research on oil palm and kenaf. Through the understanding, NKTB will supply kenaf, while MPOB undertakes pilot plant study and Dongwha commercialises. Bioteknologi / Biotechnology Star Due diligence through DNA 21/07/2012 Biodiversity International launched a Kuala Lumpur-based facility to Page : Ecowatch 3 improve the identification of timber species and their origin. The end product would be an international database featuring genetic and stable isotopes for 20 major commercial timbers. Fifty percent of wood exported from Southeast Asia, the Amazon, central Africa and Russia is suspected to be logged illegally. Technologies such as DNA fingerprinting and stable- isotyping might be some of the solutions that can identify the origin of such timber. In Malaysia, FRIM has undertaken studies to construct a DNA database profiling that were geared towards achieving similar objevtive. Dr Lee Soon Leong and his 2-3 team of researchers at FRIM have been compiling a database of intergenic DNA markers for cengal, ramin melawis, kempas and red meranti. Some have been completed whilst others are still being identified. The data from this compilation would enable any DNA samples extracted from any piece of wood be used to cross-check the source of origin for the purpose of identifying illegally logged timber. New Straits Times Tapping biotech potential 18/10/2012 The world’s first integrated bio-methionine and thiochemicals plant is being Page : 11 built at Kertih Biopolymer Park (KBP) Terengganu at a cost of RM2 billion. The plant will produce methionine used in the production of animal feed. The project is expected to generate RM11.1 billion gross national income and sales amounting to RM20 billion by 2020. The plant will use Acacia mangium and petai belalang wood as raw biomass material while the leaves of the latter will be used as cattle feed. New Straits Times Boost for biotech sector 31/10/2012 Ten Entry Point Projects (EPPs) have been identified by the Biotechnology Page : 2 Implementation Council (now renamed as National Bioeconomy Council) to boost Malaysia biotechnology sector. The EPPs cover three focus areas: agriculture, healthcare and industrial, and include Industrial Bio Inputs, Bio- based chemicals, Biomaterials, Bio-based Farm Inputs, High Value Bioingredients, High Value Food Varieties, Biosimilars, Drug Discovery and Preclinical Services, Molecular Screening and Diagnostic, and Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine. With 20 trigger projects, the EPPs are expected to create 16,300 high-quality jobs, and increase the gross national income by RM3.6 billion in 2020. To stimulate the biotechnology industry, a maximum of RM1 million of grant and a maximum of RM2 million of loan – limited to RM3 million – will be given to BioNexus-status companies. Another RM300 million will also be approved for research university for the registration of IP of R&D commercialisable products. Star Biotech investment target revised 08/11/2012 Malaysia has surpassed its investment target fpr the biotechnology sector Page : Biz News 8 and revised it to RM26 billions for 2015 from the initial RM9 billions, according to BiotechCorp. The target consists of foreign direct investment and domestic direct investment, and as at October 2012, RM12.7 billions worth of investment has been clinched.
