PD/MDC News – May 2021 A Caregiver’s Loving Tribute: Patty & Dick Goldman Patty Goldman passed away at the age of 81 on January 9 after living with Parkinson’s disease for over 12 years. Dick Goldman was Patty’s devoted husband for over 61 years. Patty’s family will remember her as a warm, generous, and loving person, always committed to helping others. During her life in Boston following graduation from Wellesley College, Patty was committed to community service and continuing education. She was a member of the Newton Human Rights Commission, the League of Women Voters, the Newton Times for whom she covered meetings of the Board of Alderman, and the Brandeis Life Long Learning Program. She was Executive Director of the New England chapter of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation (AAFA). She was honored by AAFA for her distinguished service when she retired. In June of 2003, she and Dick received the Community Service award from the American Jewish Committee. Patty’s connection to the BIDMC community is notable. Diagnosed with breast cancer, Patty had her first mastectomy at the Beth Israel Hospital at age 40 in 1979. Following her surgery, she received chemotherapy for one year under the excellent care of Lowell Schnipper, MD, and chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology. In appreciation for her care, Patty wanted to make a contribution to the Hospital as a volunteer and joined the Hospital’s Women’s Auxiliary. She was instrumental in the formation of the Friends of the Beth Israel Hospital, which was a combination of the Women’s’ Auxiliary and the Men’s Associates. Following her second mastectomy, Patty was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and first saw David Simon, MD, PhD, in November of 2008. Patty was fortunate to have been treated by Dr. Simon until her passing early this year. In her honor, and in her spirit of giving to the community, Dick has decided to endow a fund with a major gift. Dick, with his two children, are establishing the Patty Goldman Parkinson’s Community Endowment to memorialize her in perpetuity, and importantly, to contribute to the advancement of care of patients and their caregivers and the myriad of issues they face on their journey living with Parkinson’s disease. Our center is grateful for this extraordinary gift to help support our Parkinson’s community. You can add to this fund at any time by sending a check, or going to our giving page, and designating the donation to the Patty Goldman Parkinson’s Community Endowment. With our deepest respect and condolences, we remember Patty, and we thank Dick and his children for this extraordinary gift. Visit our donation page»

Parkinson’s: It’s a Family Affair Once a parent is diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), many questions arise for adult children. Adult children may wonder: “What causes PD?”, “What are the treatment options?”, “How can I best help my parent?”, and “Am I at greater risk for PD?”. We know that PD affects the whole family, but what does this mean for adult children? We are offering this educational opportunity for adult children to meet the members of the PD treatment team in this informal evening event. When: Thursday, June 24, 5:00-6:30 PM Where: Zoom meeting Attendance is free, but registration is required. For any questions, email Mikayla Hyman at mhyman@bidmc.harvard.edu or call 617-667-5215. Register Here. Congratulations to Becca Stubbs! Becca Stubbs, Social Work intern, was nominated for the Excellence in Field Education Award from Simmons School of Social Work BSW Program. This prestigious award reflects the dedication she has brought to our PD Center of Excellence Programs. Becca’s internship was focused on supporting the range of WellnessWorks educational and exercise programs as well as our PD Living Alone Parkinson’s Foundation grant. She has been the “glue” holding together many administrative aspects of these initiatives and she has directly interacted with our patients and family members. Becca has been an integral member of our team, making many contributions to our planning efforts. In September she is moving on to pursue her graduate degree in Social Work at Boston University. We will be lucky to have her with us through June.

Follow us on Twitter » Research Spotlight: Sleep Apnea in Older Adults Dr. Veronique VanderHorst is the recipient of a major multi-institutional research grant from the National Institute of Aging. The focus of the grant is on sleep apnea in older adults. Sleep apnea is common in older adults, and represents one of the non-motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease. It is a risk factor for different health complications, including heart disease and cognitive impairment. While obesity is the major driving factor in middle-aged adults, in older adults the types and causes of sleep apnea are likely different and may involve changes in brain circuits. This project will provide new information about the types of sleep apnea that are common in older adults and will determine whether sleep apnea is an early sign of disease pathology in the brain. It will then help identify properties of brain cells that can be used as potential targets for interventions to decrease these
sleep difficulties, specific for older adults. This multidisciplinary project involves close collaborations with Dr. Aron Buchman at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and Dr. Andrew Lim in Toronto.
