Going, Going, Gone!
I ts that time of year again! The 2018 Paws and Claws
Annual Fall Auction will be held on Friday, October 12 at
the International Event Center in Rochester. Our Auction
is our number one fundraising event and for good reason!
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. as we start our silent auction.
We fill a room with over 300 items that will interest just
about anyone. Beautiful baskets are filled with themed
items and displayed as works of artistic beauty. Like
dogs and cats? We’ve got you covered. Items for your spa
nights? You bet! Something to fill your raised glass with?
We’ve got you covered there, too. Get the idea? Sections
of items close throughout the evening, giving you many
chances to “win” throughout the night. After we finish
up in the silent area, our fun Live Auction begins!
Once again, a lively atmosphere will be created by
auctioneer John Kruesel and his sidekick, long-term
volunteer and Board member, Dan Estes. Be ready
to raise your number to bid as we raise funds for
the animals in our care. We hope to see you there!
Tickets are $20 and include a light meal.
•Watch for updates and ticket information on
our Facebook @pchsrochester and web pages.
We will be collecting items for the auction
again this year on Saturdays from 10a.m. to 4p.m. and
Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-8 p.m.,
beginning Saturday, September 8 through Thursday,
September 27. Single items or items to help fill baskets
are always welcome. Our donation center will again be
located at Tom Kadlec Kia on the East Frontage road
off Hwy 52. We are humbly indebted to the generosity
of the Kadlec Family for their financial support of our
endeavors.
•If you have an item to donate or questions about
donating or sponsoring our Fall Auction please email

impounds. The longest trip she’s made was her first
trip, to Willmar, MN, where she brought back two very
pregnant dogs, Colby and Brady.
She also has fostered dogs twice, once a mama dog
and her seven three-day old pups, and “failed” fostering
by adopting the mom! Her most recent foster was

now gone to his forever home, where she knows he’ll

Her house currently is shared with four dogs and a
cat. The cat was a stray who “somehow found her way
into our home.” Two are Paws and Claws dogs, a 15-year-

years ago and her “foster failure.” She also has a rescued
standard poodle and inherited her mother’s Maltese.

grandchildren, from nine years old to college age.
When not at the shelter, she enjoys reading, knitting,

they have another cruise planned for next year, but Jacque
says “I’m really a homebody at heart, though, and love
being home with my critters.”

Puppy Yoga

O n three Saturdays in March and April, up to 30 people
gathered at Assisi Heights for a fun morning of moving
and stretching with some of the cutest yoga partners
around – puppies! Paws and Claws Board Member Jessica
Smidt and Stephanie Clark of Mayo Clinic Integrative
Health were the organizers of this “Paws and Poses”
event, where Mayo Employees brought donations for
Paws and Claws for the opportunity to spend some time
on the mat with some furry friends. The idea was to take
two stress-reducing activities – yoga and pet interaction
– and combine them to see what would happen. Two

The yoga poses gave the participants opportunities to
pet a passing pup or work them into the pose. There
was a lot of laughter at the pups’ antics and at the end of
the sessions both the participants and the puppies were
more relaxed. Some yogis were lucky enough to have
an exhausted puppy take a nap on their mat or their lap
at the end of class! We were able to share some of the
fun via Facebook Live on the Paws and Claws Facebook
page. The classes didn’t directly lead to adoptions, and
didn’t raise a lot of money, but the goodwill and fun were
through the roof!

2018 Rummage Sale a Smashing Success
I n early June each year, Paws and Claws holds a rummage sale. This year it was
the weekend of June 8-10. The sale has been taking place for nearly two decades and
continues to grow. All year, volunteers work to sort donations we can’t directly use
with our animals to get them ready for the sale. The week before the sale, an army
of volunteers was assembled and worked to sort and tag donations that came in all
week. The generosity of our supporters who donate to the sale cannot go without
mention. This year, our thoughtful supporters brought lunch and refreshments for
the volunteers. The volunteers were so grateful because many of them had worked
through the unusual heat of the prior weekend to be ready for the sale.
With all the donations, we filled an entire building at the Olmsted County
Fairgrounds! It may have even over-flowed a bit! The first year we earned $10, 000
dollars at our sale, we were ecstatic. However, this year exceeded all our expectations!
After counting all the quarters, our final tally was over $21,000! This sum will go far

                                        chance at a better life.
There were many individuals that made this event happen! Throughout the year,
our staff carried donated items up to the attic. Additionally, over 100 volunteers who
participated in this event. Our heartfelt thanks to each person who worked, donated,
