As she says, “I love animals and think every pet deserves a loving home, and I love being even a small part of helping that happen. I like volunteering with Paws and Claws because I think this is a fantastic organization full Jacque has been volunteering of caring people, and I love being part of the team.” with Paws and Claws for 20 years and says it’s fantastic Now she helps with vet visits at the shelter, which working with an organization usually occur once or twice a month. One of her Right: Jacque gives a little favorite activities is long-distance transports where she TLC to a puppy at the shelter. brings animals to Paws and Claws from other rescues/ impounds. The longest trip she’s made was her first trip, to Willmar, MN, where she brought back two very pregnant dogs, Colby and Brady. She also has fostered dogs twice, once a mama dog and her seven three-day old pups, and “failed” fostering by adopting the mom! Her most recent foster was Toblerone, one of the puppies with severe mange. He has now gone to his forever home, where she knows he’ll have a fun-filled, wonderful life! Her house currently is shared with four dogs and a cat. The cat was a stray who “somehow found her way into our home.” Two are Paws and Claws dogs, a 15-year- old Maltese/poodle mix who was adopted about 10 years ago and her “foster failure.” She also has a rescued standard poodle and inherited her mother’s Maltese. Jacque moved to Rochester in 1984 and retired almost four years ago from Mayo Clinic, after working there for 30 years. She has an adult stepdaughter and five beautiful grandchildren, from nine years old to college age. When not at the shelter, she enjoys reading, knitting, and weaving. She went on an Alaskan cruise last year with her stepdaughter and oldest granddaughter, and they have another cruise planned for next year, but Jacque says “I’m really a homebody at heart, though, and love being home with my critters.” Volunteerism “Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.” fall • 2018 | www.pawsandclaws.org | – James Matthew Barrie 5
Puppy Yoga O n three Saturdays in March and April, up to 30 people gathered at Assisi Heights for a fun morning of moving and stretching with some of the cutest yoga partners around – puppies! Paws and Claws Board Member Jessica Smidt and Stephanie Clark of Mayo Clinic Integrative Health were the organizers of this “Paws and Poses” event, where Mayo Employees brought donations for Paws and Claws for the opportunity to spend some time on the mat with some furry friends. The yoga poses gave the participants opportunities to pet a passing pup or work them into the pose. There was a lot of laughter at the pups’ antics and at the end of the sessions both the participants and the puppies were more relaxed. Some yogis were lucky enough to have an exhausted puppy take a nap on their mat or their lap at the end of class! We were able to share some of the fun via Facebook Live on the Paws and Claws Facebook page. The classes didn’t directly lead to adoptions, and didn’t raise a lot of money, but the goodwill and fun were through the roof! 2018 Rummage Sale a Smashing Success I n early June each year, Paws and Claws holds a rummage sale. This year it was the weekend of June 8-10. The sale has been taking place for nearly two decades and continues to grow. All year, volunteers work to sort donations we can’t directly use with our animals to get them ready for the sale. The week before the sale, an army of volunteers was assembled and worked to sort and tag donations that came in all week. The generosity of our supporters who donate to the sale cannot go without mention. This year, our thoughtful supporters brought lunch and refreshments for the volunteers. The volunteers were so grateful because many of them had worked through the unusual heat of the prior weekend to be ready for the sale. With all the donations, we filled an entire building at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds! It may have even over-flowed a bit! The first year we earned $10, 000 dollars at our sale, we were ecstatic. However, this year exceeded all our expectations! After counting all the quarters, our final tally was over $21,000! This sum will go far in helping the many cats and dogs who come through our doors each day, for their chance at a better life. There were many individuals that made this event happen! Throughout the year, our staff carried donated items up to the attic. Additionally, over 100 volunteers who participated in this event.
