Welcome Note Dear Young Trailblazers, The year 2020 will leave indelible memories because of the changes and challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic across the world. Against the backdrop of an already rapidly changing world, the pandemic has brought sweeping changes across many sectors at an astounding rate. The key to navigate successfully through all these changes is innovation. Industries that were hit hard by the pandemic have to adopt new ways of doing things. At Acorn Training, we too had to find new ways of organizing the Prudential Young Trailblazers competition. In February of 2020, when the number of COVID-19 cases in the community started to rise significantly, we were concerned about the feasibility of running a competition that would bring students from different schools together. At that point, we had to make a decision whether to continue or postpone the competition. We took the bold step to continue because we wanted to take the opportunity to explore new ways of running this competition. We had to “walk the talk”. The outcome was that we organized one of the first online hackathon for students. Design thinking workshops and mentoring sessions were effectively conducted while everyone participated in the safety of their own homes. At the finals, every team had the opportunity to pitch their ideas online to the panel of distinguished judges. It was our first but the remote collaboration among all the teams was highly impressive and successful. Each year, we aim to fulfil the vision of this competition: where ideas become real. We are proud that the winning team from Millennia Institute in the tertiary category went on to set up their own fintech company as a result of the competition and successfully soft launched their product at the prestigious Singapore Fintech Festival. For the 2021 edition, we hope to support more students to embark on this exciting journey of innovation and entrepreneurship. We look forward to equipping you to be the next generation of trailblazers. Yours Sincerely, Elmer Lau Training Director, Acorn Training Pte Ltd Organizer of Prudential Young Trailblazers Participants’ Guidebook 3

Intellectual Property As you embark on this journey of innovation and entrepreneurship, you will find that your ideas both need to be shared publicly as well as be protected wisely. This process is about understanding your Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). Intellectual Property (IP) refers to the ownership of a creative work, whether it is an expression or solution to a problem. IPRs serves to protect the value of such IPs. It encourages greater creativity and innovation in society by ensuring that the creators of the IPs get to reap the benefits of their work or contribution made. There are many forms of IPRs. The common ones are: 1. Patents: protects the functional expression of an idea. E.g. Machines, methods, processes, manufacturing process, composition of matter or the improvements of any of these items, etc. 2. Copyrights: protects the specific creative expression of an idea through a medium of artistic or creative expression. E.g. Paintings, photographs, sculpture, writings, software, etc. 3. Trademarks: protects any symbol that indicates the source or origin of the goods or services to which it represents. The main purpose of a trademark is to protect the consumers by informing them where the goods or services originate from. This provides them with prior knowledge regarding the reputation or marketing of the origination of the goods or service. E.g. Brand logo, tag phrases, etc. Eventually, when your team discovers the next big idea, creates the next new expression or product, or even creates a new brand name, you will want to have your IPs protected and respected. To find out more, please refer to https://www.ipos.gov.sg/understanding- innovation-ip to get an understanding of innovation and IP in the Singapore setting. Likewise, it is important to remember that whenever an idea, product or even symbol is taken as a building block of your IP, a referencing to where the source originates from must be made. You may use your own preferred referencing format, just as long as the proper credit due is given. Participants’ Guidebook 18
