High School and Your Child Choices and Transition Manager of Student Services Middle School Chris Gill
Melville Senior High School The difference between primary and high school can seem vast and Melville SHS is keen to make the transition for your child seamless. While most students will find the shift exciting, a few will no doubt find high school quite different. Our job is to make the process of adjusting as safe and comfortable as possible.
Year 7s Primary to High School The differences between Primary and High School – Size of the school – Size and number of the students – Number of teachers – Number of classrooms – Play – Change - new people - new hormones – Student Services
Melville Senior High School • Our high school is bigger than your child’s primary school, with approximately 1,400+ students. • Although the Year 7s will be integrated within the school so they can access specialist classrooms and facilities, they will also have a dedicated area for lunch and recess. • This will include dedicated handball and basketball facilities, as well as a beautiful sculptured garden in which to relax
Getting to School & Buses Transport to and from School Parents who drop off: • If you drive along Leach Hwy consider dropping students south in Winnacott St at the overpass. Students must use the footbridge and you can avoid the traffic in Potts St. • If you drive via Marmion St, make the drop off a few blocks from the school to avoid traffic right outside the school. • The staff car park CANNOT be entered to drop students at school. • Encourage walking, riding or bus. Why not drop your child at one of the bus stops? Most of the buses drop the students outside the school or at the overpass so they don’t have to cross a single road
Buses Many students use the public transport routes to get to school The buses leave from: • Munster (via Marvell Ave) • Fremantle Station (via Marmion St) • Canning Bridge Como • Bull Creek Train Station (via Leach Hwy) • Kwinana/Spearwood
A Notice from our Health Centre • Where possible students will be encouraged to go back to class • If students are not well enough to go back to class parents will be contacted • There will be times when there is no nurse available • Please ensure medical details are completed on enrolment and updated as necessary • Anaphylaxis/Asthma actions plans need to be submitted to the nurse
Pastoral Care & Transition Transition • Students come from across most of the South Metropolitan area as well as overseas. • If your child does not know anyone or is apprehensive, the school is used to dealing with these uncertainties and will be able to assist them to make friends with students who are in a similar situation to themselves.
Transition There is a dedicated transition program for Year 7s coming to Melville SHS that includes: • Parent and student information nights • Fun and helpful activities in the first week • lunchtime games and competitions to help students get to know one another • Peer Mentors • Twilight picnic for students and parents

Parents can help Parents Can Help Academic proficiency is not If children are given practical and social life the only skill needed when skills by parents students will have starting high school. confidence to achieve success.
Skills for High School Academic proficiency is not the only skill needed when starting high school. If children are given practical and social life skills by parents, students will have confidence and success. Practical skills • Food preparation (making own breakfast/lunch etc) • Washing and ironing uniforms (including putting away the ironing board) • Basic sewing (to repair buttons etc) • Tidying up (their room, other areas/items used) • Wiping down areas (kitchen benches/cooking surfaces) • Familiarity and confidence in catching public transport and crossing roads is really important
Parents can Help Social • Appropriate manners (please, thank you, excuse me, pardon me) • Awareness of surroundings (e.g. Not swearing in public, knowing when it is and isn’t appropriate to use slang, and the difference between this and formal language) • Taking turns (e.g. Let other passengers off the bus before boarding) • Say hello & use peoples name Academic • Have a proper dedicated spot to study. It doesn’t have to be a desk but it is best to have a quiet area. It is best kept as neat as possible. • Ask your kids what they did today at school everyday. • Make children aware that they should become familiar with teacher names, so you know them as well.
Parents can Help Parents can help; Have a copy of your child’s time table and encourage them to refer to it when preparing for the next day. Have some ideas of healthy lunch options. Fruit and sandwiches or equivalent will give them energy all day. Try to dictate what they will buy for lunch if possible. Lunch orders are also online – or through the canteen Parents are encouraged to attend events at the school such as parents nights, recitals and sporting carnivals. Students may say they are embarrassed but will often secretly be quite pleased - especially if you can remain subtly anonymous.
