SECONDARY BRITISH EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
Key Stage 3 (Y7, Y8, Y9) In Key Stage 3 the students follow a broad curriculum studying a range of subjects in order to build up their skills, knowledge and understanding in each area. During this time they are encouraged to become increasingly organised and independent students and individuals, responsible for their own achievement. Key Stage 4 (Y10 & Y11) Key Stage 4 is a two year cycle leading to the first external examinations from which the student will gain their formal academic qualifications. Students study a broad range of subjects following International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curricula qualifications; the students take externally marked exams at the end of Y10 and Y11. Some subjects also have a coursework component that is also marked externally. A grade is awarded for each subject taken. Additionally, the programme includes some non-examined subjects which are required in the UK, such as PE and PSHE and which Oakley College embrace as essential components in providing a balanced education. Key Stage 5 (Y12 & Y13) This pre-university stage is known as The Sixth Form, and corresponds to the two years of Secondary Education between the ages of 16 and 18. The sixth form qualifications in the United Kingdom are AS (Advanced Subsidiary- half A2 level) and A2-level (Advanced level) Students study up 5 AS level subjects during Y12 and continue studying up to 4 A-levels in Year 13. Pass grades for AS Level are: A, B, C, D and E, with the added possibility of achieving A* at A2 for the highest achievers.

Key stage 3 Mr Felipe Key stage 4 Mr Liam Key stage 5 Miss Chani Preparation for Learning Secondary students will develop as independent individuals who are organised and responsible for their commitments. This is not always a smooth process at a time of increasing distraction for children, and invariably requires support from parents and from staff. We support this development in our students with Responsibility for Learning (RfL). RfL consists of attitudes and strategies for learning, which will help the students become more effective and independent. Responsibility for Learning (RfL) We believe that in the right environment with the right attitude all students are capable of achieving and succeeding. We share that responsibility with all students and your families. The student´s Responsibility for Learning is a vital part of the whole process of learning. It will reflect the extent to which he /she is developing their student skills and their commitment to using these skills to improve their learning in each subject. These attitudes for learning and
student skills all support each other, and students should work with teachers, other students and parents to develop and apply them. They include the following 6 points: 1. Problem-solving: finding a way to understand or solve things on which you are stuck. 2. Independence: developing the ability to find answers, check answers and to learn on your own. Students will certainly need help to develop this to begin with. 3. Responsibility: taking ownership of the learning; motivating yourself; gauging your own progress; not making excuses, but instead finding ways to improve. 4. Resilience: not giving up when things get hard. You are only really learning something new when you have to go and find it out, or really have to work at it. 5. Challenge: find challenge in all your studies and in homework. Take on challenges with enthusiasm — it is when you learn the most, and you learn more quickly. 6. Resourcefulness: making sure you are using all the strategies available to solve problems, and making good use of sources of information, expertise and knowledge. Students are expected to arrive on time at school each day equipped for their programme on that day, and are responsible for their own preparation to learn within the school community. Equipment All students are expected to arrive each day with the following: their planner their fully charged Chromebook two working pens a pencil a ruler a protractor a compass a calculator scissors books and equipment for each individual subject on that day homework for the lessons on each individual day PE kit, when required for lessons any specialist kit for clubs on that day dry-wipe pen Lateness At Oakley we believe that students should arrive on time for school so that they can take part in the form time activities. Further to this it helps prepare for adult life. We hold monthly late detentions after school on a Friday. Parents will be informed about this by email in the week leading up to the detention and students will be informed by their form tutor If a student is late 3-4 times a month, then they serve a 15 minute detention If a student is late 5-9 times a month they serve a 30 minute detention If a student is late 10+ times a month they will serve a 60 minute detention and parents will be invited into school for a meeting with the Head of Secondary Policies The school policies are essentially the governing documents by which the school is run. They are available on the website - https://oakleycollege.com/downloads-page/#top.
Uniform Policy https://drive.google.com/open?id=1UVxR7ohbsDwhcofUa7oqQTYaicqBVIya Policy Sixth Form Privileges Sixth Form Students hold the privilege of: using a phone for essential calls ONLY. Calls can only be made: in the designated area outside of lesson time when the students are on their own using a phone to listen to music in the library area to aid personal study and concentration with the following conditions: headphones are not shared between students (ie an earpiece each is not accepted) music is played at a volume which is discrete and for the individual user only There are no exceptions to this rule. The conditions and sanctions apply as for students in other year groups. Use of Student Planner Each student will be given a student planner to note down each piece of homework and when it is due to be handed in. We ask all parents to help their son/ daughter to organise themselves by checking their diary daily and signing on a weekly basis. The diary should also be used as a form of communication between home and school. All students will have their homework checked and signed by their form tutor on a weekly basis. Homework Homework load will gradually increase throughout the Secondary Department from one hour to three hours a night. Homework will be relevant and varied, challenging students’ skills as well as knowledge and understanding. Homework needs to be done sat at a table in a quiet area away from the TV or other distractions; students should get used to using a regular working environment where they know they can go to study in peace. It should allow ready-access to resources and support material. Students need to quickly develop good personal study habits as they enter the Secondary Department. In offering support to your son or daughter, help them reflect on their Responsibility for Learning, as well as: Strategies in approaching the work Focussing on what is required to make the work successful Looking to improve on specific skills, ways of working or knowledge areas which have previously been less successful for students. Homework marks count towards termly subject marks. If homework is not properly completed it will have a serious effect on the student's subject grades and their termly report. Lockers All secondary students are provided with lockers and must use them. These will be assigned to students at the start of the year and parents will be billed for the deposit of the key. Deposits are returned in exchange for the key.
The locker is so that students Do not have to carry around all their books for the day Do not have to carry their PE kit around all day Have a place to keep their packed lunch Have a safe place to put their bag during lunch time Students should only go to their lockers: Before registration At break time At lunchtime At the end of school Students should not be using their lockers in between lessons Library The school offers a free lending service throughout the year. Students can borrow a maximum of three books for a two week period. Text books for subjects are loaned for the whole year and they should be returned before the end of June. Parents will receive an E-mail advising them of overdue books. In case the book cannot be returned, due to loss or damage, there are two options. a) Buy the same book and give it to the school b) Make a set payment of: - €8 for books in Primary (Year 1 to Year 6) - €15 for books in Secondary (Year 7 to Year 13) - €25 for textbooks, encyclopaedias and dictionaries
Assemblies Assemblies are held on a Wednesday in the school gym and parents are welcome to attend. The school will only accept medicines that have been prescribed by a doctor, dentist, nurse prescriber or pharmacist prescriber. Medicines should always be provided in the original container as dispensed by a pharmacist and include the prescriber’s instructions for administration and dosage. The school cannot accept medicines that have been taken out of the container as originally dispensed nor make changes to dosages on parental instructions. Only office staff are authorised to give medicines to children. Staff may supervise older children self-administering medicine on school trips. Student Absence If a student is absent from school parents must notify the office on the actual day of absence. On their return to school the student must bring either a doctor´s note or a note from the parents clarifying the reason for the absence. This must be handed in to the office.
Trips There are a number of educational trips run by the school. Some of these are subject-based whilst some are available to all students. Details of these will be sent to parents by letter as they arise. Overseas trips As part of Oakley´s commitment to our students personal development, the school organises a variety of oversees trip for secondary students. Destinations include Germany, Italy, Spain and France. Electronic Equipment Mobile phones and personal music devices (MP3s) are not allowed in school Any phones or MP3 players found to be in use on the school premises will be confiscated and handed to the Head of Secondary who will place them in the safe. Use refers to any device which is switched on. This rule applies to all students. The incident will be recorded, and the phone will be returned to the parent of the student. Parental access to school during the working day The norms of accessing the school during the working day are in accordance with the stipulations set out by the Directorate-General for Educational Centres and Infrastructure: "In general, parents cannot interrupt the learning process or school hours in order to communicate with their children during the school day." In case emergency access is required, permission must be requested from the Head of Primary or Secondary. BEHAVIOUR POLICY https://drive.google.com/open?id=1_Nv1EMRV422sQDwv_4uPwQEWXKCqMItV We have a positive behaviour policy based on mutual respect for others and for the community. This principle provides the foundation for all behaviour in our community, and good behaviour is expected from all members of the school community at all times. THE CURRICULUM The curriculum at Oakley College is designed to fulfil the following: provide subject knowledge which will allow students to obtain qualifications provide broad academic study which will inform students’ future choices, opinions, interests and actions, giving them knowledge on which they can draw throughout life allow students to experience express and create, providing a foundation on which they can build a rich life Integral to their academic study, students will be supported in developing their skills as students through their lessons, with guidance and support from teachers. Students will be led to begin to: understand themselves as students, and how to make their study more effective and efficient. evaluate own work and the work of others

The subjects taught in KS3 are: Y7, Y8 & Y9 Subject English English Skills Spanish Maths Science History Geography ICT Computer Science PE Assembly/ PSHE Art Activities Music French or German Sociales Key Stage 4 Curriculum Programme At the end of Year 10 all students will take Spanish Language IGCSE and IGCSE English as a second language. All students will study English, Spanish, Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and a Modern foreign Language (French or German) as core IGCSE examination subjects. Students must also select two IGCSE examination subjects from the Options – one subject must be selected from each group. OPTION 1 and OPTION 2 subjects for Year 10 and 11 are grouped each year to allow students the greatest amount of preferred choice. These options include Art, History, Business Studies, Geography, ICT and Physical Education. Information on making these choices is presented to parents before they are required to indicate their choices. In addition to these subjects, students will also have lessons in PE, Sociales and PSHE. The subjects taught in KS4 are:
Subject English English skills Spanish Maths Physics Chemistry Biology Option 1 Option 2 Sociales PE PSHE / assembly French or German Key Stage 5 Curriculum Programme (Sixth Form) The Sixth Form study programme requires students to show advanced levels of academic endeavour, understanding, and independent studentship. Teachers and tutors will work to support students in making the significant leap towards achieving the academic independence and resourcefulness, in skills, organisation as well as the critical and evaluative thinking required to be successful at university and as leaders in work and society. This progression is central to all subject programmes at A level, and will be supported directly within subject lessons and through school support programmes. Students are expected to select a minimum of three subjects and a maximum of four for study at A level, with an additional Fase especifíca option in 2 of the subjects they are already taking. The option choices are set into blocks each year to cater for the interest and demands of specific year groups entering into Year 12. Consequently, these ´choice options´ will change each year. The subjects which are presently available at A level are: Art, Biology, Business Studies, Physical Education, French, ICT, Chemistry, English Language and Literature, Geography, German, Mathematics, Physics, Spanish Language and Literature (A2), Spanish Literature (AS). Subject Option 1 A level (Required) Option 2 A level (Required) Option 3 A level (Required) “Fase” option or Option 4 A level (optional) “Fase” option or Option 4 A level (optional) PSHE (Required) English Skills C2 (optional) PE (Required) School policy requires students to meet the following criteria before they enter Year 12 ● Five passes (A*- C grades or 9 to 4) at GCSE level or equivalent ● It is preferred that they attain a B or grade 6 in the subjects that they would like to take. ● Students need to have passed a C1 Cambridge language exam either externally or internally ● Students will also need a full community service portfolio with all the necessary hours completed, with photographic evidence and where possible certification. ● Students will also need to have an interview with the Principal.
Assessment Students will receive regular feedback on their work. This feedback may be in the form of a mark, particularly for tests. Work will also contain comments and guidance, which will inform the students of what they have done well, what they should target next for improvement and what action they should take towards achieving these improvements. The feedback may make reference to knowledge, or skills and technique. As students’ progress through Secondary they are expected to become increasingly adept at both evaluating their own work, and at formulating their own action to appropriately address areas for improvement. To this end we expect students to reply to comments made by teachers in purple pen to form a constructive dialogue about their work. Classwork, assessments, examinations, homework tasks and other learning tasks are used to continually gauge student progress and to assess student achievement, as well as to inform staff in providing an individual, challenging programme for students during the year. This is known as teacher assessment. Reporting Grades At GCSE and A level, the grades used to report student progress will be based on those used by the external examination boards. Throughout KS4 and KS5 the grades reported by staff will be the grade which the teacher anticipates the student will achieve in their final external examination if the student maintains their present level of application to work and rate of progression, referenced to their current level of achievement Reports At the end of the first term the report will have the teacher assessed level, their target for the year, an average mark and their effort grade for each subject. There will also be a comment from their tutor as to how they have settled into the year. At the end of the second term the report will have the teacher assessed level, their target for the year, an average mark and their effort grade for each subject. A short comment from each subject teacher and a comment from their tutor as to their overall progress. At the end of the year the report will have the teacher assessed level, their target for the year, an average mark and their effort grade for each subject. A full comment from each subject teacher and a comment from their tutor as to their overall progress for the year. Reports record the achievement and the Effort grade of the students. Global marks, at the end of term 3, are calculated as the average of the three term grades. Resit Examinations These are sat at the beginning of the final week of the summer break by students in Year 7-10. These only apply to the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, where the final examination grade confirms poor attainment throughout the year, and prevents students accessing the continuation of the course in the following year. The Principal and Head of Secondary will meet with the student and parents if a student does not achieve a satisfactory grade in their resit examination, in which case it may be recommended that the student resit the academic year. Coursework for GCSE and A Level students
Deadlines for coursework submission are published to students and parents. These include draft coursework deadlines and final coursework deadlines. Deadlines for draft submission The draft coursework should be to the highest standard the student can achieve. This will enable the teacher to provide more complete constructive feedback. If a student misses the deadline then they miss the opportunity for feedback. Deadline (Final) If a student fails to hand in their coursework on the final draft date the student will receive zero marks for that piece of work. This will considerably compromise their final GCSE examination grade. Community service As a school we believe that community is important and especially the one in which we live. We believe that we should try and help our community, other people and maybe those who need our help. Therefore as a school we have a compulsory community service programme KS3 = 6 hours a year KS4 = 12 hours a year KS5 = 18 hours a year Students are expected with the guidance of their tutor and Key Stage Managers to set up their own community service, this is so they can become independent, resourceful and problem solving. Once this is done they need to attend and complete the necessary hours. This can be done at several places and the school also offers opportunities to complete hours through race for hunger and translation at parent´s evening. During the community service students need to take photographs to add to their booklet as evidence that they have completed the task. The community service programme will help our community and also help our students to become better citizens Cambridge English Language Exams As a school we enter our students for Cambridge English language exams. The students have an English skills lesson once a week that helps them to prepare for these exams. We believe that these exams help the students to access the British curriculum, GCSE´s and A levels. Therefore if they can do this successfully then they will achieve better grades. Further to this they will have an official exam in English, certifying their level in English reading, writing, listening and speaking. This is something that employers and universities look for. Year 7 – No exam but general preparation for the Exams Year 8 A2 (PET) Year 9 B1 (KET) Year 10 B2 (First certificate) Year 11 C1 (advanced) Year 12 C2 (proficiency) this is optional These exams take place at the end of May and the start of June, usually on a Saturday and where possible are sat at Oakley College. Although there may be times when students will need to go to other schools to sit these exams. As a school we feel so strongly about the importance of these exams, that if students do not pass these exams they will not be allowed to progress to the next year. If a student does not pass the Cambridge exam there will be a chance to re-sit an internal English exam at the end of August. As an alternative to the Cambridge exams students can sit the internal English skills exam which take place at the end of the internal exam week. However this does not come with an official exam. The students will have to also pass this to progress to the next year. If a student does not pass the internal exam there will be a chance to re-sit the exam at the end of August.

- €15 para libros de Secundaria (Year 7 a Year 13). - €25 para libros de texto, enciclopedias y diccionarios.
