The surreal chaos depicted in his work is something that many will have experienced or felt when in a big city. Visual elements like straight lines, geometric shapes, modern cities, artist and extreme contrasts used by Cando in his works people— are reminiscent of Russian Constructivists or Bauhaus and art 1 artists. Indeed, these are the ideas that formed the basis of today’s urban architectural landscapes. His works, though, do not merely recreate these scenes, but push boundaries to explore the relationship between contemporary people and the city. According to his ideas, space has a significant impact on human understanding of time. “The life of architecture is vastly longer than our estimated 100 years of life. Architectural structures convey times we have not seen, and evolve alongside humans.” As a graffiti artist in the 1990s, Canto explored every unknown corner of cities. These spaces at the time were largely filled with abandoned facilities and old factories. From these spaces that lost their purpose, Canto began to think that architecture transcends human concepts of time. Thanks to his experience in Paris, New York, Dubai, Hong Kong, and in large cities in Nigeria and Cameroon, he was able to consider universal characteristics of global cities that were not limited to specific regions. “I thought of the city as a collective where a number of realities coexisted. Inextricably intertwined with people, cities are independent entities where constant change is taking place.” infinitely proliferating Thomas chaos Canto 52 53
In terms of artistic expression, Thomas Canto does not limit layers of reality himself to certain materials, techniques, or media. For the past few years, he has been particularly involved with creating optical illusion pieces. In particular, his two-dimensional and three-dimensional mixed works scatter the sense of space between viewers—a concept influenced by op artists of the 1960s, namely Carlos Cruz-Diez. In these works, randomly repeated geometric shapes are arranged over two or three dimensions. The crossing of these complex images makes it difficult to decipher what is real and what is not. What is he trying to express by mixing reality with non-reality? “When we are in a building, we can only observe a fraction of the whole structure. But these other spaces aren’t non-existent just because we cannot see them. And sometimes there are places where I think there will be more spaces, but there aren’t. This is to say that there are always various realities that we can’t perceive and I wanted to express that together in these In a solo exhibition in 2015 at the Wunderkammern Gallery transcendental works. Gabriel Dawe creates tangible The Plexus series by Gabriel Dawe at the PRISM rainbows that won’t fade with the FANTASY exhibition held in PARADISE ART SPACE changing skies. presents spectra of light refracted off of a prism. But, these curious creations are not made with actual light, but with ultra fine threads. The artist connects one end of the space to the other using thousands of colorful threads to mimic magical moments of nature. Individual threads are nearly invisible to the naked eye and appear significant only as a collective whole. In essence, these spectra of light are deliberately created through a painstakingly delicate assembly of threads. artist From the ceiling to the floor, these works can evoke a shelter for the a variety of experiences depending on the point of soul 2 view. The colors appear to be as light as the air itself from a distance, and reveal themselves as lines only upon closer examination. When viewed from a slightly different angle, these overlapping lines make patterns in the air. The mysterious harmony between such fluid shapes and colors feels like a dream somewhere between fantasy and reality that should not be disturbed. The series title Plexus refers to the body’s blood vessels and neural network. This group of tissues are transmitters that connect and maintain every part of the human body. The spirit of these titular roles are conveyed in this series via thread. The threads connect spaces, communicate colors, and gather them to shape columns of light. But the use of thread is different from how it would be used for clothing. “This series was born out of much thought about the exchange between fashion and architecture,” attests artist Gabriel Dawe on the concept for his works. The beginning of these installation pieces was an idea that expanded the use of thread in fashion to an element of architecture. The common denominator between fashion and architecture is the idea that they are both “shelters” for the human body. “I wanted to create new things by constructing objects in spaces that resemble cloth. It is a refuge for the spirit and soul, though, not the body.” Dawe was inspired by the comfort that he found in spectra of light, and he recalled how rays of light in the air looked like they were weaved together like threads. light made Gabriel from colorful threads Dawe 56 57

It seems as though a natural phenomenon has merely appeared, but the work is a result of meticulously repeated actions. First, the shapes and colors are imagined in the space, and then a computer program is used to precisely calculate the number of rings and length of threads to be installed on the ceiling, walls, and floor. This process is similar to weaving carpets or fabrics. Thousands of threads are bound from top to bottom, left to right. Another point is that the length of one thread can span from a few meters to a few dozen meters, and are threaded not with a needle but with a large pole to connect the rings where the threads are looped. “It’s dull work. As soon as my hands touch it, there’s always some regret. But as the work starts to take shape, I get excited again. Because great details I couldn’t even envision at the beginning start to appear.” For example, in Plexus No.40, a pattern of tiny holes appears at each intersecting point of the threads.
