Particular contributions you have made? I try my best to encourage our young people to grow into beautiful beings. I don’t judge my students but I listen to them and advise them the best I can. Junior Council Team Meet with Local Councillor Brooke Patterson A quality that particularly makes me stand out is my ability to take distance from conventions and rules in order to be able to On Monday, 24 August our Junior Council senior delegates stand up. were graced with the presence of our local Councillor, Brooke Patterson. This was a great opportunity for Vicki Serras, Year 11 and Ryden Camara, Year 11, to advocate local concerns and Junior Council successes over an informal chat with our 2
newly elected local representative. Mrs Kerry Cable, our Junior Council representative at the Gold Coast City Council was instrumental in securing this unique ‘leadership’ meeting. Mr Rickard, our school Principal, offered some considerable insight into leadership experiences at the school level. Vicki and Ryden discussed issues about how young leaders can contribute towards and be a support for the vision of the Gold Coast. Already, our Junior Council is heavily involved in many community service events, in their own time and during school holidays. They learned that Cr Patterson finds it extremely fulfilling in her own leadership position working for the local council. The topic of leadership was significant and both Vicki and Ryden acknowledged the wide spectrum of interpretations behind the meaning of ‘leadership’ as it is so personal to everyone. ‘Dark Emu’ by Bruce Pascoe presents evidence from diaries and records of early Australian explorers to put forward an argument for reconsideration of the hunter-gatherer label for precolonial Aboriginal Australians, showing that Indigenous Australians were domesticating animals, planting and reaping crops, plus irrigating and farming. ‘This is Not a Test’ by Courtney Summers, is another apocalyptic novel where six students take cover at school from zombies trying to get inside. They soon realise that being safe inside is not perhaps the best place to be either as they try to survive this ordeal. Benowa State High School’s English Department takes won’t happen at all. It is the responsibility of students to submit plagiarism very seriously. their own work and act with integrity. Plagiarism includes: And even though it’s a parody, unfortunately Saturday Night Live can be very close to the truth sometimes. Hopefully this • Paraphrasing ideas from someone else’s work gives you a laugh and ends a fairly serious article with a smile! • Copying the work of another student, either in full or – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDxN4c_CmpI in part https://www.youtube.com/embed/yDxN4c_CmpI?showinf • Letting other students copy your own work o=1&rel=0 • Copying and pasting sentences, excerpts or ideas from the internet or other texts Matt Pickersgill Sometimes students think that if they paraphrase another Head of Department - English person’s work by using synonyms, this is enough for it to be ‘original work’. That is not the case. Students must have their own ideas and analysis that they write from their own perspective. While research can help them sharpen their own Student Absence SMS ideas, they should not reword the ideas of others using synonyms. Even if this is unintentional, it is still considered Service plagiarism. This TED-Ed video describes how many students in high school and university try to plagiarise, and how it can easily be detected. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrjoaaIxaJI https://www.youtube.com/embed/SrjoaaIxaJI?showinfo=1&re l=0 In English at Benowa we use the website Turnitin.com to check for plagiarism. In senior years (10-12), all students use this website to submit their assessment. In middle years (7-9), teachers also use the website to routinely check student work for plagiarism when it is suspected. Turnitin.com checks student work against the internet for plagiarism, and also matches student work to other students, checking for originality and authenticating submissions. To avoid plagiarism, students should not give copies of their own assessment work or drafts to peers. If students are found to have plagiarised from one another, the plagiarised section will not be marked for either of the students involved. Students should also be very careful not to plagiarise through paraphrasing someone else’s ideas. Even in an exam, if students memorise and replicate someone else’s work, this is considered plagiarism. COVID-19 Recovery Service The best way to avoid plagiarism is for students to think of their ideas themselves, and use the classroom activities and Information unit work to help generate their ideas. They should never be copying and pasting from any source, or changing words, or copying whole ideas and just rewriting them with their own https://benowashs.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/1130/ sentences. All of these forms of plagiarism will be detected and covid19_recovery_service_information.pdf will significantly impact student results. Standard practice is that any plagiarised section of an assessment item is not marked. The grade will be based on Employment sections that are not plagiarised. In many cases this could lead to a failing grade. Students cannot resubmit plagiarised work. It will be marked accordingly, so it is always best not to plagiarise in the first place. In the event of students plagiarising their English assessment, teachers or the Head of Department will be in contact with parents to explain how much of the work has been plagiarised and how it will affect their grade. But we always hope that this 6
