Chairman’s Address I would like to welcome each and every one of you to the Fastnet Film Festival 2022. This is our 13th Festival and believe it or not the planning for this festival commenced in 2019. Unfortunately, our 2020 festival was cancelled at very short notice due to the CoronaVirus Pandemic. We continued to plan for an up close and very personal festival for 2021 but again pandemic retractions were imposed that only allowed us to have an online-only festival. It is an interesting fact and a credit to the “online” festival that we had viewers for every continent except Antarctica! Our unwavering enthusiasm for the festival remained and regardless of the setbacks we were determined that Fastnet Film Festival would once more be enjoyed by everyone. At the time of writing all restrictions are now a thing of the past and we look forward to the 2022 festival being the best yet. Festivals do not happen by themselves and the Fastnet Film Festival is no exception. We are a 52 weeks a year organisation and this can only happen if there are a number of dedicated people who are prepared to work diligently and for long hours to produce something exceptional. Fastnet Film Festival and I are blessed to have such a dedicated and remarkable Committee and a small number of extraordinarily professional, enthusiastic and committed employees. It goes without saying, but should always be acknowledged, that without these people and their determination the festival would not be possible. I am deeply grateful to them and wish to publicly congratulate them all for the wonderful job they have done. Our patrons have continued to provide support, expertise and encouragement. These are a really unique group of professionals who have been relied on and have been always willing to do whatever they can for the festival. Their contribution cannot and should never be underestimated. All festivals require funding and at times this can be difficult. However, the real value of the Fastnet Film Festival is recognisable and we are lucky to receive funding from a diverse range of sources. These include the Arts Council, Cork County Council, IMRO, FIS, The Cespo Foundation, and many more . The businesses and community of the Mizen are unceasing in their ongoing support but it would be remiss of me not to mention Bill & Judy Bollinger. Bill and Judy have supported the festival both financially and professionally since its inception and without them it truly would not exist. This year we have 18 competition prize categories and we have had 400 entries from 31 different countries. As such, we can only screen just over half of these entries and I wish them all the very best of luck. In a very loose way, the Fastnet Film Festival has a touch of “Irreducible Complexity”. Each aspect of the festival is independent of, yet completely reliant on all the other aspects. The sum of our parts is greater than the whole but the aspect that gives us all the greatest pleasure is to welcome all of you to our little town without a cinema and to thank you for taking the time to join us. Tom McCarthy Chairperson 3
Festival Director Cancelled in 2020, wholly online in 2021, it’s wonderful to be back live in Schull in 2022 to relish the uniquely warm and friendly vibe that makes the Fastnet Film Festival so special. A glance at this year’s programme will show you that FFF is as eclectic as ever, with a rich mix of screenings, contributions from distinguished industry guests, special events, seminars, workshops and much, much more. Notable highlights this year will include: • Some 300 short films and more than a dozen features. • A trip to Cape Clear for our Lá Teanga na Gaeilge, where Peter Coonan will introduce a curated programme of Irish language short films and Irish feature film, Doineann, for which he received a 2022 IFTA Best Actor nomination. • A double focus on Conversations with Friends, one featuring director Megan K. Fox in conversation with cast members Alison Oliver and Joe Alwyn, the other a behind-the- scenes insight into the making of the series with director Lenny Abrahamson, Head of BBC Films Rose Garnett and producers Ed Guiney and Emma Norton. • Scotland provides our ‘Country Focus’ this year, with three features, a programme of shorts and a seminar with director Virginia Heath, producer Grant Keir and Director of the Edinburgh Short Film Festival, Paul Bruce. • One of the features from Scotland is the much-loved ‘Local Hero’, produced of course by our very own local hero, David Puttnam, who will be participating in a Q & A ahead of its screening. • An al fresco screening in the Schull harbour park of Breaking Out, Michael McCormack’s vivid tribute to another iconic local hero, the late Fergus O’Farrell. The screening will be followed by a concert by Interference, Fergus’s band, a fitting prelude to our wrap party. • Industry guest contributors will include Aisling Walsh and Stephen Rea (both collaborating on a seminar on acting) as well as Ciarán Hinds, Siobhán McSweeney, Paul Mescal, Martina Niland, Stephen Warbeck, Ros and John Hubbard, Rose Garnett, Peter Coonan, John Murphy, Maureen Hughes, Neil Leyden and many, many more. • The premiere screening of Brian Dwyer’s ‘Wireless, winner of the 2021 Puttnam Script Award. • Our ever-popular Quiz, hosted this year by Carmel Winters, and our equally popular Awards Ceremony, hosted by Gerard Stembridge. So, with sincere thanks to all of our supportive sponsors, especially Bill and Judy Bollinger, I would like to welcome you, regulars and first-time visitors alike, to FFF 2022, the world’s friendliest film festival.
