Are you an active adult with a curious mind and a keen interest in learning—just for the love of it? If so, you are invited to join with more than one thousand like-minded learners in our area who are members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Virginia. There are no prerequisites, educational or oth- erwise, for you to continue your intellectual exploration and enrichment with us. Generous donors contribute to our scholarship fund to ensure that interesting courses are available to everyone. The World Health Organization defines active aging as “the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation, and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age.” OLLI at UVa invites you to discover our many opportunities for engage- ment and enlightenment. Our Mission Aware that an active mind is as necessary as social relationships and physical exercise to a full life, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Virginia offers educational opportunities and intellectual enrich- ment to active adults in the community. The Institute is member-directed and draws upon its members’ resourc- es, as well as other academic and community resources, to organize courses and other educational activities. In this stimulating environment, members may acquire new knowledge, explore ideas, exercise creativity, and share interests and expertise with others. NOTES from the director I invite you to dive into the Fall 2019 OLLI at UVa Course Catalog! The curriculum committee and the staff have put together a wonderful range of offerings, with eighty-eight classes including forty-eight new topics and fifteen new instructors. From pressing global issues like the Geopolitics of Global En- ergy and Global Warming to Virginia-specific classes like a Visitor’s Guide to the Literary South and The Brief Insider’s Guide to Virginia Wine, you are sure to find something that you’re excited to learn more about. In addition to classes, Fall 2019 OLLI members can also sign up for our Michie Summer Series, centered on the theme of Conversations in Albemarle County His- tory, participate in stimulating summer discussion groups, and join in the fun of daytrip outings to Washington, D.C. and Luray Caverns. This is our second semester using the CampusCE online registration system which has greatly enhanced the registration process for members and staff alike. An open house practice session will be held in the OLLI of- fice on Thursday, July 11th from 10:00am-2:00pm to help those who may be new to online registration or need a refresher. We want all OLLI members to be comfortable registering online, so please come on by for some step-by-step practice. An expanded benefit of the new system is an online version of the catalog that includes ad- ditional course details, extended instructor biographies, and recommended course materials. You will also notice that OLLI at UVa has adopted a new course numbering strategy for the Fall 2019 se- mester going forward. Each course is assigned a letter/number combination, based on the course category, and will retain the same course number each time it is offered. This is a change from our previous course numbering strategy which was based on the day of the week the course was offered. I hope to see you at one of the Taste of OLLI events in July. Bring a friend and introduce them to the stimu- lating, creative, and fun world of OLLI at UVa! Summer Session OLLI at UVa in Partnership with Michie Tavern Presents Conversations in Albemarle County History A series of informal presentations OLLI at UVa proudly continues its Michie Tavern partnership by offering another special Summer Session lecture-and- wine series! Join us as we learn, sip, and socialize in one of Central Virginia’s most beautiful historic settings. The OLLI Summer Session at Michie Tavern features a series of presentations—cumulatively titled “Conversations in Albemarle County History”—presented by award-winning local historian Rick Britton on three Thursdays: August 1st, 15th, and 29th. August 1st: Jefferson’s Brilliance: His Greatest (Lesser-Known) Accomplishments Most everyone is familiar with the three accomplishments that Thomas Jefferson considered most important: his authorship of the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, and his founding of the University of Virginia. But what about his innumerable lesser-known achievements? Some of them may surprise you. August 15th: Benjamin Franklin Ficklin: Thrill-Seeker Extraordinaire Modern-day healthcare professionals have long been aware of the “thrill-seeker” personality type. Albemarle County native Benjamin Franklin Ficklin, co-founder of the Pony Express, perfectly fits the bill. If something exciting was hap- pening, he was there. If it involved risk, he’d take it! Summer Session August 29th: Rio Hill: Albemarle County’s Only Civil War Combat At Rio Hill in February of 1864, a small unit of plucky Southern artillerists confronted a much larger number of horse- men under the leadership of Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer (of Little Big Horn fame). It was a minor action, to be sure, but it’s an amazing story. A much-sought-after speaker, historian Rick Britton offers two types of presentations: “lectures” during which he reads from prepared manuscripts, and informal “talks” or “conversations,” which are delivered with the use of only an outline. Join us for one or all three of these “talks” as we experience “Conversations in Albemarle County History!” The events begin at 4:00 p.m. with a half-hour meet-and-greet featuring wine and cheese. (Please note that Michie Tav- ern will open no earlier than 3:45.) At 4:20 we’ll announce “last call for wine” and begin the talk at 4:30. A Q&A period follows until 5:30. The $18.00 fee for each event includes the talk, cheese, two glasses of wine, and a book-signing. Using OLLI’s online registration system or the form at the back of this catalog, sign up early to attend one, two, or all three talks. NOTE: You must be an OLLI member for the Fall 2019 semester to participate in this special Summer Session. The registration deadline is the Friday before each lecture; no refund requests will be accepted after that day. Charlottesville-based historian and cartographer Rick Britton is the author of the award-winning 2008 book Jefferson: A Monticello Sampler, and Virginia Vignettes: Famous Characters & Events in Central Virginia History (2015). He also teaches Virginia history classes, conducts battlefield tours, and illustrates maps for history books. 8 OLLI at UVa Fall 2019
Summer Discussion Groups 3 Discussion groups, a member benefit, provide another setting that fosters in-depth exploration of a variety of topics. If you are an OLLI member for the Fall 2019 semester, discussion groups are free, but you must register to reserve your place in the group! To ensure full participation, each group is limited to twelve people. To register online, or view required materials or readings for a discussion group, please visit OLLI’s web- site at: www.olliuva.org Current Affairs: A Time To Listen, A Time To Speak (DG001) Tuesdays, July 30, August 6, 13 1:30-3:00pm Facilitator: John Bates OLLI Conference Room Are you keeping up with politics, current events, cultural trends, the state of affairs of our living planet, and more, but wish there was a forum/gathering where you could listen to other people—and be heard yourself—to discuss these topics without feeling isolated? Join us and be a part of a safe and comfortable group experience where everyone can share their thoughts and feelings. Group members are encouraged to propose and lead current topics for discussion. John Bates is a retired schoolteacher and retailer who seeks to provide a forum where citizens can speak out, share ideas and beliefs, and most importantly, feel and think in a safe space. Re-Inventing Ourselves At Any Age (DG006) Wednesdays, July 31, August 7, 14 10:30am-12:00pm Facilitator: Paige Odelle Bridge Church – Fishersville (1275 Goose Creek Rd, Fishersville, VA 22939) Loss is inevitable, and often results in having to re-imagine and re-invent ourselves at different stages in our lives. This discussion group for women will focus on the particular challenges of changes—both wanted and unwanted. Participants will examine their evolving roles in relationships with partners, children, friends, and family members and how to navi- gate those transitional challenges. A frequent participant in OLLI courses, Paige Odelle is a former art educator with experience navigating the expect- ed—and unexpected—changes life brings. Born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley, after many twists and turns, she has found her way back here. Considering Global Current Events Through Discussing CIA Maps (DG002) Thursdays, August 1, 8, 15 1:30-3:00pm Facilitator: Paul Mack OLLI Conference Room Using CIA maps from a university’s former document repository, along with select slides as appropriate, this discus- sion group will explore the impact of geography on politics and history. OLLI at UVa Fall 2019 9
Summer Discussion Groups Examples may include consideration of China’s takeover and militarization of islands in the South China Sea; the legacy of colonialism in contemporary Africa and the Middle East; and the potential impacts of sea level rise around the world. While each session will focus on a specific area of the world, some basic geographer’s tools (reviewing latitude and longitude, reading a map, and understanding winds and ocean currents) will also be covered for context. Paul Mack is a life-long K-12 educator, former Peace Corps volunteer, and recently retired professor of education, having taught Economic Geography. As his former university discarded its map collection, he saved them, using them for classroom and community presentations. Six Great Ideas (DG003) Tuesdays, August 6, 13, 20, 27, September 3, 10 10:30am-12:00pm Facilitator: Bob Reynolds OLLI Conference Room Most of us are amateur philosophers in the sense that we have all adopted a variety of basic philosophical precepts, of- ten unknowingly. We simply accept them as right, good, appropriate, and better than the alternatives, based on our educa- tion, religion, heritage, and nationality. Many philosophies carry significant themes that might designate them as political, religious, epistemological, historical, or even racial. Nonetheless, there are several philosophical concepts that seem to be universal in all cultures, languages and historical settings. These six are: TRUTH, GOODNESS, BEAUTY, LIBERTY, EQUALITY, AND JUSTICE. This OLLI discussion group will center on these six concepts and follow Mortimer Adler’s 1981 book Six Great Ideas. This will be a discussion group with little or no didactic content. Although his major interests in college were history and philosophy, Robert Reynolds later attended medical school and pursued a career in academic medicine, finishing with twenty-two years at UVA. In this discussion group, he hopes to share his interest in philosophy with those who are similarly inclined. The 2020 Presidential Primaries - Both Parties (DG004) Wednesdays August 21, 28, September 4 11:00am-12:30pm Facilitator: Bob Lorish OLLI Conference Room Who is in? Who is not? Who is in which “lane”? Who do you like? Why? Who wins Iowa? New Hampshire? South Carolina? What is happening with the Republicans? Come to this discussion group, put your two cents in, and make your predictions for 2020. From watching the first televised presidential conventions in 1952 to the 2016 election, Bob Lorish has always been fascinated by presidential elections. His UVA master’s thesis in history was on the election of 1824. Let’s Talk College Football (DG005) Thursdays August 22, 29, September 5 10:30am-12:00pm Facilitator: Steve Bevis OLLI Conference Room Can UVA get to the ACC football championship game in 2019 by winning the Coastal Division? Is this the year UVA finally takes down Tech? Will Clemson bring the ACC another national championship? If not Clemson, who? What’s the best conference from top to bottom? So many questions. We’ll tackle all of them and more. The only thing you need is your love for college football. A perusal of one of the preseason publications—Street & Smith’s, Athlon, Lindy’s, Phil Steele—would be helpful, but not necessary. Join us to talk college football. As a sports writer at the Tuscaloosa (AL) News early in his career, Steve Bevis had the opportunity to cover one of the nation’s premier college football programs. While his career moved on from sitting in press boxes on crisp fall afternoons, his passion for college football never waned. 10 OLLI at UVa Fall 2019
