GP Creative Economy in Tourism Culture • Creative tourism has grown in SA, focuses on a new kind of tourist interested in active learning experiences and meaningful interactions with local people. • Typically include arts, crafts and design activities; musical experiences; encounters in the field of health, healing and spirituality; cooking and gastronomy; or heritage and storytelling activities. • Creative tourism has a potential role in reshaping township tourism in a responsible manner • Creative tourism provides several avenues for catalysing economic opportunities to locals, upgrading physical township spaces. • Creative Economy has made an important contribution to the establishment of creative precincts, which bring together creative firms in a single district. Tourism services such as accommodation, restaurants, shopping facilities and markets have played a significant role in developing such precincts. • The challenge is how this current dominant approach to township tourism may be reconfigured to offer a more sustainable alternative that provides a less demeaning experience for the residents of informal settlements and a more authentic experience for visitors, while also helping to combat local unemployment and poverty levels through generating economic opportunities and upgrading township spaces.
#KokotaGP – Home of Amapiano Gauteng Drawcard Case Study Amapiano is a style of house music that emerged in South Africa in 2012. It is distinguished by high pitched piano melodies, Kwaito basslines, low tempo 90s South African house rhythms and percussions from another local subgenre of house known as Bacardi. In 2020 GTA initiated The ‘Kokota GP’ promotional drive intended to aggressively claim the space and confirm Gauteng as the “Home of Amapiano”. Amapiano, also affectionately called "the yanos", is the new craze in the streets of South Africa. The house music subgenre started in the townships of Gauteng cities Pretoria and Johannesburg. It's now one of the most popular genres in the country. Serves as a major drawcard for increased visitation to the province.
