BOARD OF TRUSTEES Strategic Initiatives Update In service to our SMCS mission of “Preparing and inspiring students to lead meaningful lives, rooted in the teachings of Christ in our Catholic tradition,” the Board of Trustees continues to make progress on our strategic plan. A headline of our strategic efforts is that we are blessed with a very active Catholic Identity Committee. This committee has been instrumental in ensuring we deliver on our commitment to weave our faith in all we do. The addition of a high school Campus Minister is just one example of this. We are thrilled with the opportunities this minister is helping create for our students to grow in their relationship with Jesus through prayer, service and genuine conversation. Specific results from each Strategic Task Force are highlighted below. Recruitment Goal: Grow SMCS enrollment by sharing our strengths, which include academic excellence, a caring faith-based community, best-in-class facilities and technology and unique opportunities for students. • Achieved over 6% growth in enrollment this school year vs. 2018-19 school year. That’s an increase of 56 students for SMCS! • Updated our SMCS branding including the new tag line of “A Community Inspiring Success.” This tag line was built with input from many students, parents, alumni and friends of SMCS. It highlights our dedication to the individuality of each student’s path to success as they build a strong foundation for life at SMCS. • Created a forum for parish youth ministers and SMCS campus ministers to collaborate on opportunities and best practices to strengthen our school/parish connections and better deliver on all youth spiritual offerings. • Supported opportunities for growth in Fine Arts with the addition of a high school and middle school drama class. Academic Excellence Goal: Inspire, energize and challenge our students through our Catholic schools academic programs built on best-in-class learning models and further opportunities for personalized experiences that stretch each student’s capabilities. • Refined the curriculum continuum to ensure quality and consistency across schools from early childhood-grade 12. This will also improve transparency to parents on the curriculum offered at SMCS. • Created a superintendent/education leader role focused on elevating our academic model. This position was posted in January with the intent of filling the position for the 2020-21 school year. While we are very proud of our schools, we know that the world continues to change and we need to evolve with current best practices to meet the needs of our students. Financial Sustainability Goal: Ensure system financial stability, operating within a balanced budget, while increasing and leveraging third source funds for strategic investments in SMCS. • Established a SMCS Foundation and associated Foundation Board to attract major gifts from donors to ensure financial sustainability. Our new Director of Mission Advancement, Chris Decker, will lead our outreach efforts to build this foundation through the generosity of donors. Community and Continuity Goal: Develop and maintain interactions within our system, including academic, social, faith-based and extracurricular, that are viewed as exceptional and directly interconnected from early childhood-grade 12. • Surveyed parents as a first step in establishing a forum for feedback with families to build on SMCS community based activities. Long-term, this team is focused on improving engagement of parents, students, alumni, parishes and friends in system activities. At the end of this school year, the Board of Trustees will review overall progress against the strategic plan as part of setting new objectives for the 2020-21 school year. We are so proud of our system and will continue to challenge ourselves to make improvements that deliver on our vision of being celebrated as a system where students discover and develop their God-given talents and experience success through learning, faith and service. Accreditation St. Mary Catholic High School is accredited by AdvancEd. The elementary and middle schools are accredited by the Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools (WRISA). The schools are also a member of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and WRISA. SMCS teachers, specialists and aides meet the requirements of the Diocesan Foundation Catechetical Certification process and are licensed educators, and all teachers and specialists hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.
A message from the SMCS PRESIDENT Dear SMCS Friends and Families, This year was like no other, with its incredible high points, as well as some extreme challenges. We continue to flourish due to the significant engagement and progress that staff, volunteers, parishes and donor financial support assisted with in providing for St. Mary Catholic Schools. Key highlights include: • Enrollment growth to 904, a 6.5% increase over our previous year enrollment of 848 • Tuition grants of $630,167 awarded to deserving families • A net investment of $1,392,985 contributed from our five parishes to support our Catholic school mission • An investment of $50,746 for our early childhood Preschool and 4K classrooms to upgrade space, furnishings, and learning activities materials at all three elementary campuses. • An additional $40,888 donated for new elementary teacher desks • School safety staff training, along with safety and security upgrades of $30,887 • A $175,020 gift of two new full size school buses that will now safely and efficiently transport our students to school and to many educational and co-curricular events • A $9,000 project to rejuvenate eight regulation-size courts at the Riviere Tennis Center • Building of our stunning $2.5 million Zephyrs Fields soccer/football/track facility, with a synthetic turf field and running track, field event areas, a new LED track timing and scoreboard system, and a high-performance sound system with capability to live stream contests • Annual appeal support of $169,429 gifted from our alumni and friends • Net proceeds of $98,423 attained for student activities through Zephyrs Connect, fine arts/activity/athletic booster clubs and elementary/middle school fundraising • Additional revenue of $78,816 through our Z-NIGHT/Zephyrs Gold, and SCRIP fundraiser profits • Our first virtual Zephyrfest event, which raised an amazing $544,813 net profit • Formalization of our new SMCS Foundation established to attract major gifts to ensure long-term financial sustainability Along with these noteworthy achievements, we were faced with a pandemic which closed our schools and campuses for the entire fourth quarter. During this time, our administrators and teachers quickly adapted to provide remote on-going learning to all of our students. With many of our revenue streams negatively affected, we were still able to retain and pay all employees with funding awarded through our $970,000 CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program stimulus loan. As I approach the end of my time at SMCS, I reflect upon the tremendous opportunity I have been blessed with to serve as president of this exceptional school system. I cannot fully express the appreciation and respect I have for all who make our schools thrive – your commitment, your passion, and the unique gifts each of you bring to our schools is truly remarkable! Thank you to each and every one of you for being a vital part of preparing and inspiring students to lead meaningful lives, rooted in the teachings of Christ in our Catholic tradition! With gratitude and very warm regards, Helen Englebert, SMCS President On July 1, 2020, Dr. Timothy Schigur joined the St. Mary Catholic Schools system as superintendent, with the intention of taking over the leadership reins upon Mrs. Englebert’s planned retirement at the end of this calendar year. His 25 years of seasoned experience and leadership roles at both public and parochial Wisconsin schools provide an orderly and visionary transition as St. Mary Catholic Schools adapts to a changing educational land- scape. The SMCS Board of Trustees and administration will continue to focus on the system’s objectives of providing the very best in Catholic education, attracting and retaining students and premiere teachers to a Christ-centered community, delivering academic excellence with college tracking and goal-setting for students, enhancing alumni and donor relations, and growing Zephyrs pride in the system.

ZEPHYRS Fields A new top-of-the-line track and athletic field was added to the high school and middle school campus providing a premium play space for athletes. Ground breaking took place in late winter and construction wrapped up August 26, 2020. The track hosted its first ever event on August 28 as part of Zephyrs Connect. The synthetic turf field for boys and girls soccer and football is surrounded by an 8-lane regulation track done in Zephyrs blue. The new complex includes a long jump track, pole vault pit, discuss and shotput area. This space can be used for track and field, soccer, football and other co-curricular sporting events. Zephyrs Fields is a $2,500,000 complex built by Miron Construction and funded by Bergstrom Automotive and Miron Construction. The architectural and engineering was designed by Point of Beginning, Inc. This exciting addition to our campus enables SMCS to offer the most state-of-the-art athletic complex in the valley to its student body. Matthew Schoultz, Activities Director, shared these sentiments, “Our new facility is world class. We are blessed to have a facility like this. Our entire student body from preschool through high school will benefit from this exciting space. All of our schools will be able to enjoy using this for physical education, field days and other creative academic opportunities. I cannot wait to see how our teachers incorporate this space into their curriculum.” The facility upgrade changes the face of sports at SMCS. Zephyrs Fields will generate additional income for our school system and community, as we host sporting events and tournaments. It will help drive enrollment and engagement among students and provides a space for our student athletes to train and compete at the highest levels. Summarizing the benefit of this facility for our entire school system, Superintendent Tim Schigur said, “The students are so blessed by this addition to our campus. Our facilities, alongside the great academics we provide, make SMCS a destination school. We are thrilled to see how this new facility will drive our mission to inspire student success in the classroom, through co-curriculars and in spiritual growth.”
CAMPUS MINISTRY Efforts As a part of Teens for Life I participated in many of the events that were done for campus ministry. We went to the Planned Parenthood clinic in Appleton once a week during the 40 Days for Life campaign, and we were a part of a spiritual adoption program where we each prayed for the life of an unborn baby for nine months. One of the best experiences was the March for Life. Held in Washington D.C., we were a part of a larger group from the Green Bay Diocese. While there we had daily Mass, visited many churches and cathedrals, and prayed in front of Planned Parenthood. We also attended the March with people from all over the world. It truly was an experience I’ll never forget. SMCS campus ministry also organized several events during 9th hour throughout the in-person school year. Every Friday, we did the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and on Thursdays we had Mass. The campus minister would also offer a “3 O’clock God Talk,” where he would teach us something new about the faith that we could ask questions about and discuss. In addition to 9th hour activities, he also planned the class retreats throughout the year and helped plan school liturgies and service opportunities. At the end of the year, when we were all at home, we were still able to meet and do the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, the Rosary, the Liturgy of the Hours, and a Bible study via video call every week. Through all of these opportunities, I have been able to spend more time with God, especially Jesus in the Eucharist, and I have grown in my relationship with Him. - Sophia Moore, Class of 2023 STACY (SWEETELLA) NOVAK 2020 State Finalist for the Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship The Kohl Teacher Fellowship program recognizes and supports teaching excellence and innovation in the state of Wisconsin. As a system, SMCS nominates one candidate annually. For the 2020 Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship, Stacy (Sweetalla) Novak was unanimously nominated by SMCS leadership. She takes initiative, is innovative and is an educational thought leader. Stacy is a blessing to our school system! Stacy has written multiple grants for projects that are important to our staff, students and families. She provided leadership on programs like NFL Play 60 and the Hula Hoop Project. Most importantly, Stacy works with OUR SCHOOLS administration to develop the core elements for the Aquinas Program, our grades 3-5 gifted and talented program, including the criteria for assessment and selection of students. According to SMCS President Helen Englebert, “Stacy continues to introduce activities that promote collaborative learning and results-based outcomes. She has greatly enriched and positively impacted our schools and students. Stacy is a tremendous asset to SMCS!”

ZEPHYRFEST It is with great joy and a bit of nostalgia that we look back to May 2, 2020, and the first ever Virtual Zephyrfest. The COVID-19 pandemic was in its infancy and SMCS rose to the occasion by holding the first virtual fundraising event by a non-profit from Oshkosh to Green Bay. Only the creative and passionate SMCS community could have pulled that off! We want to thank all of our sponsors and donors who partnered with us to ensure the mission of SMCS would carry forward. Together we raised a profit of $544,813! It is with great anticipation that we announce the date, April 24, for Zephyrfest 2021. As we continue to manage the pandemic, we are directing all of our planning and creativity to an event that will be like none other. The 2021 event will be more creative, more engaging and more inspirational than ever. We cannot wait for you to join us! $544,813 Profit BUSINESS Directory St. Teresa of Calcutta taught us many things. One of those many valuable lessons is to do things for others OUR SCHOOLS simply because we can. “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.” At SMCS we are taking that quote to heart! We want to do great things together. One simple, yet impactful, thing we can do is highlight your business and hard work in our community. We have dedicated a page on our website for an Alumni & Friends of SMCS Business Directory. When you share your business contact information with us we will display it as a way to support the great work you are doing! It is our hope that people will look at the directory first when they need professional services in the Fox Valley. When they do, your business will be front and center. Complete the online form at https://smcatholicschools.org/smcs-business-directory/ to include your business! It is our pleasure to include you and your skills in this directory. SMCS wants to help you succeed and grow as you utilize your God-given talents to serve the people in our communities.
PARTNERS from NEAR and FAR The world faces a need for new innovators, thinkers and problem-solving leaders. The goal of VEX is to create engaging, affordable and powerful solutions that immerse students in STEM through the excitement of building and programming. “It’s Legos on steroids!” This is how junior Kaden Miller describes his work with the SMCS VEX program. “When I was younger my dad wouldn’t let me cut Legos into the correct size. Now I get to cut metal and make it all fit.” Evan Unruh, a sophomore at SMCS, recognizes that creative problem solving is fun and sees its importance in shaping a better future. “You get useful experience in knowing how work flow goes and just be able to do work more efficiently.” Students like Kaden and Evan are offered these opportunities to grow and learn because of generous partners in our mission to inspire success. Those partners come from near and far. Distance never stopped Joan Hartl and her late husband Richard Hartl (‘55) from keeping SMCS close to their hearts. Working in a STEM related field his entire career, Richard wanted to provide a great start to aspiring science-minded students. The incorporation of PLTW into St. Mary Catholic Schools’ core curriculum four years ago, and our various STEM-related co-curricular activities, have been a perfect fit for the Hartls’ desired area of giving. Emilie Boots, middle school science teacher, appreciates the Hartls’ generosity. “The students are blessed with materials and equipment we have never had before.” Boots says, “The students work as a team. Students at every level are able to shine in the presence of their classmates!” Support for SMCS does not just come from far away. Patricia Samolinski of Winneconne, WI has found a unique way to support the mission of SMCS. Working at Winneconne Thrift and Gift, a faith-based resale store, has enabled Patricia to support a variety of Catholic religious curriculum and fine arts opportunities at SMCS. She generously donates her paycheck directly to SMCS. She knows having a variety of opportunities makes a difference to our students, “SMCS is smaller. Where else can a student be in football, chorus, forensics, fine arts and experience such diverse clubs?” Freshman Ray Pingel said this about our generous supporters, “I would say they have changed many kids’ lives.” Patricia and her husband Craig Samolinski (’69) directed a portion of their financial gift to the Fine Arts Italy Trip that will happen in the future. Patricia plans to join the group as a chaperone and looks forward to being an eye-witness to the growth these students will experience in Italy! Pamela Barnhill, SMCS Band Teacher and Italy Trip organizer, commented “We could not do these kinds of trips and give students these unique opportunities without support from people who believe in what we are doing. It makes our work with students so much more rewarding when we know people see the value!” If you want to join the Hartls and Samolinskis in changing the lives of students at SMCS, contact Director of Mission Advancement, Christopher Decker at cdecker@smcatholicschools.org or 920-722-7796 ext. 662. SMCS FOUNDATION St. Mary Catholic Schools Foundation unites alumni, parents and friends in celebration and support of St. Mary Catholic Schools. The Foundation recognizes that tuition assistance, teachers’ professional development, technology upgrades and facilities sustainability are vital areas for the health and well-being of SMCS. The Foundation is committed to providing a third-source income to SMCS for generations to come! Current SMCS Foundation Board member, Dan Engelhard, remarks, “I am very excited about our future. SMCS continues to drive improvement in all areas of our mission. I believe the SMCS Foundation will be an excellent resource to SMCS and will provide greater confidence to our donors in the future.” We are pleased to offer new partners to the Foundation a special incentive. Until June 30, 2022, all gifts made OUR SCHOOLS to the Foundation will not be charged any administrative fees. This incentive guarantees that 100% of your gift directly supports our schools, students and teachers! The central goal of the SMCS Foundation is providing the very best for SMCS students, teachers and staff. Current Foundation Board President, Ryan Valentine, summarizes it best, “The SMCS Foundation will benefit students and families by encouraging new gifts. Like most organizations, we face some financial challenges. We want the best teachers, the best administrators, the best facilities and the best experience for our students and families. We will always need the generous support of our donors. The SMCS Foundation will ensure we properly manage existing gifts and will encourage new donations.” If you would like to consider a gift to the SMCS Foundation please email or call Christopher Decker at cdecker@smcatholicschools.org or 920-722-7796 ext. 662.
ALUMNI Spotlights Alec Brew ‘12 Alec participated in a group of physical therapy and engineering students for an annual “Go Baby Go” build project. This project takes electric cars that young children commonly have, and then customizes them to fit the needs of children with difficulties in ambulation that limit their abilities to explore the world around them. Alec’s favorite part of this project was working in tandem with the engineering students, and seeing the big smiles from the kids and parents when they brought the toys to their homes. Alec will be graduating in the fall of 2020. Nathan Berg ‘17 A mechanical engineering student at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Nathan was selected for an intern position with SpaceXin Hawthorne, CA. Nathan was the manufacturing engineer for the Dragon 2. He describes his great opportunity below. “I was the manufacturing engineer for 2 different valves designs that are present on the Dragon 2 spacecraft propulsion system. Multiple quantities of each design are present on every vehicle, and all the physical valves I was responsible for will be used on future missions (with and without astronauts on board) to the ISS. One of the valves was an isolation valve, which simply acts like an on-off switch for fluid flow. The other was a burst disk that separates two pressurized systems. As a manufacturing engineer Nathan was responsible for the day to day production of his valves. This centered mostly around addressing issues that arose during the fabrication and assembly of the valves from damage, incorrect processing, failed testing, failed inspections; and when possible, developing robust processes to prevent the issues from occurring again. In the interest of continuous improvement, he was involved in various “campaigns” to increase productivity and decrease engineering input.” Additionally, he was responsible for the creation and upkeep of the instructions used by technicians to assemble the valves. Nathan was also able to get some hands-on testing with the burst disk and isolation valve to gather data for analysis and further validate the designed lifecycle of the valves. Nathan said, “I thoroughly enjoyed working at SpaceX, and my role as a manufacturing engineer because my projects and responsibilities provided me with valuable work experience. They spanned numerous facets of engineering.”
Greg Cops ‘14 Greg Cops ’14 and his finance’ Megan Faustini recently spent four months in the village of Itio-Thia in the mountains of Guerrero, Mexico serving and working with the indigenous people. Greg helped start small businesses in the village including a carpentry business, goat farm, chili farm and flower field. Megan worked in the school teaching the children Spanish. Although the program was focused on health, education, and economy, both Greg and Megan tried to spread their Christian faith in casual conversations with the friends they met while living in a missionary house with six other volunteers. Every single day was an adventure. Greg mentioned, “There were definitely ups and downs but it proved to be one of the best experiences either of us ever had. It’s safe to say Megan and I hardly ever knew what to expect. Thanks be to God we had a great experience and even brought home two pups with us, Memo and Thomyo”. Sydney Gagne ‘18 An experience of a lifetime for Sydney Gagne ’18 as she chose to study abroad in Florene, Italy for the spring 2020 semester. Sydney had a full course load which included communication, museum and Italian classes, all were taught in English. Unfortunately, five weeks into the program, the coronavirus hit Italy and UW-Oshkosh had to cancel the program. The good news though, while Sydney was there she got to experience how different cultures and countries react to a health crisis. Though Sydney’s time was short she was able to visit Prague, see the leaning tower of Pisa and she got to sit in the Budapest baths. Sydney hopes to return someday when things get back to normal. Jenna Thelen ‘18 Jenna Thelen ’18 is living in Bulach, a city just north of Zurich. Jenna is studying German in Switzerland. She is learning so much more than just the language. She said it is amazing to be immersed in a completely different culture and to be surrounded by so many people that do not speak the same language. The cultural differences took a while to get used to, but it has been so rewarding. Jenna also enjoys traveling around the region. Karli Van Camp ‘16 The pandemic and a broken arm could not stop Karli Van Camp ’16. Karli was an intern this summer for Mortenson in Portland, Oregon. The internship originally scheduled for 12 weeks was shortened to 6 weeks due to the pandemic. Three days after moving to Portland, Karli broke her arm and needed surgery. Karli was able to work with a team on the historic Schnitzer Concert Hall in downtown Portland. This will definitely be an internship she will never forget. Ally Butke ‘11 Congratulations to Ally Butke ’11, as she celebrates her four-year ALUMNI anniversary with Society Insurance. “A vacation to always remember! SMCHS EXCELLENCE Awards #4EVERZEPHYRS During the 2020 SMCHS graduation ceremony two awards were given to deserving couples. The SMCHS SPIRIT Volunteer Service Award honors extraordinary commitment and service to SMCHS. The SMCHS Honorary Alumni Designation honors non-graduates of SMCHS who make a significant and selfless impact through the sharing of their time and talents. In both of these awards we see the hallmarks of Christian faith lived out for all to see. Please join us in celebrating the 2020 recipients. SMCHS Honorary Alumni Designation: Dianne & John F. Bergstrom All three of Dianne and John F. Bergstrom’s children attended St. Mary Catholic Schools through grade school, middle and high school and completed their Catholic education at Marquette University. All nine of their grandchildren are students in all three levels of SMCS. Dianne and John F. are incredibly appreciative of the quality work that the teachers, coaches and staff do for the students. They believe that SMCS students are fully prepared for their lives going forward because of the hard work of our committed educators. They embrace the responsibility to give back in meaningful ways so SMCS can have the educators and facilities to deliver a quality faith-based education. SMCHS SPIRIT Volunteer Service Award: Jeff & Lynn Parks All three of Jeff and Lynn Parks’ children graduated from SMCHS. During the years their children were attending SMC schools Jeff and Lynn were regularly involved. They were self-sacrificing and servant-hearted. The coordination of parent-teacher conference meals was always their priority. To serve the SMCS Boosters, Jeff and Lynn also coordinated the concession stand efforts during volleyball. The Parks spirit for giving back to SMCS was a blessing to students, teachers and staff. Their contribution is a model for others to follow. SMCHS ALUMNI Mentoring Program We continue to match our current students through our SMCHS Alumni Mentoring Program. This program was established to promote career awareness with our high school students. The main goal is to allow juniors and seniors to make a connection with an SMCHS alum who is currently employed in the career field that the student is interested in exploring. Through this mentorship process, the student gains an awareness of what it takes to become successful in the identified field. The alum advises and guides the student through career exploration and sharing personal experiences with obstacles and successes they have experienced. Interested in participating? Email Anne at aledwith@smcatholicschools.org ALUMNI Share Your NEWS We want to hear from you! Update your contact information and submit your stories (engagements, weddings, children, accomplishments) to aledwith@smcatholicschools.org.
SMCS ALUMNI Awards It is important to recognize outstanding accomplishments of our graduates as well as their contributions to their communities. For that purpose, we have established several recognitions for SMCHS alumni. These are our awards and we congratulate our most recent winners. • Outstanding Catholic Christian Service Award honors an alum who has demonstrated faithful service to the Lord in vocational ministry, Christian service or a church leadership position, and through his or her continued support of SMCS. The 2020 recipient is Mary Rohe Krueger, a 1969 graduate of SMCHS. In 2002, Mary completed the Green Bay Diocese Commissioned Ministry and in 2008 earned a Masters Degree in Theology from Ave Maria University. Mary shared “Beside my faith, the best blessing in my life is my family.” Mary has stayed active with St. Patrick’s, Menasha and SMCHS ministry as: Pastoral leader, finance council member, parish council member, mass greeter, leader of stations of the cross, liturgy and care ministry committee member and liturgical role trainer at St. Patrick’s as well as SMCS Board of Trustees member and SMCS Board of Directors member. • The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an alum who has given his or her time, energy and resources to enhance the well-being of SMCS and the greater community. He or she exhibits a high degree of leadership, character and integrity. The 2020 recipient is Lori (Ropella) Vegso, a 1980 graduate of SMCHS. After high school Lori continued her education at Marquette University receiving an accounting degree in 1984. Lori and her husband Tom have lived in California, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Lori is committed to the SMCS community. She was elected to the SMCS Board of Trustees in 2016 and has demonstrated strong leadership, character and integrity in all aspects of her volunteer board responsibilities. Lori led the board strategic plan refresh, the strategic task force initiatives and served as chair of several board committees. • The Alumni Achievement Award is presented to an alum who displayed strong leadership while a student at SMCHS, who has achieved distinction in his/her community and/or field of expertise and who continues to support SMCS. The 2020 recipient is John Hale, a 1975 SMCHS graduate. After high school, John continued his education at Georgetown University. John is currently as partner at Cooley LLP in Palo Alto, California. COVID-19 IMPACTS our Young ALUMNI This is what our SMCS Alumni that are graduating from college this spring have to say on how the COVID19 has impacted them. Lauren Unruh ‘16 Before COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, I was hired as a patient care technician at a hospital in Indianapolis, to get more patient care experience before starting PA school. However, the unit I was hired on is now dissolved to support the growing number of COVID-19 patients. During my most recent shift I was floated to the medical intensive care unit where I provided support to the nurses on the front lines of this pandemic. Pat Knapinski ‘16 The new pandemic has put my path in a strange situation to say the least. Online classes began right after spring break and it honestly is not a great learning experience when you’ve spent over 3.5 years in a completely different learning setting. It’s tough but we all have to deal with it. It’s not the end to college that me or any of my friends envisioned, especially when the last two months of college are a ton of fun. Career-wise, the COVID-19 virus has put a stoppage to almost all hiring in the sport industry. With the restrictions that are in place, uncertainty has caused organizations to avoid hiring all together. It leaves me and many others with limited options following graduation, adding in an economic downturn has caused jobs to not even be posted.
Michael Van De Het ‘16 COVID-19 has definitely made an interesting end to my senior year. When it comes to classes, I would much rather be sitting in the classroom learning rather than watching online videos. I feel going online has made it more difficult than it already was to stay motivated! When it comes to the graduation ceremony, I think doing so virtually is disappointing. I think it is unfortunate that we won’t have the opportunity to walk the stage, at least anytime soon. From a job perspective, I am grateful to have signed on with a company (Georgia Pacific), but this pandemic has made it very hard for my classmates to find job opportunities, due to lack of hiring at this time. Regan Andersen ‘17 I would say that the situation isn’t ideal for anyone right now. All of my classes have been moved online obviously, but the experience has varied based on the course. My majors and coursework are very interactive so while some have remained productive, others have been disrupted and we have had to adjust a lot. Commencement has been “postponed” for now, but it is likely that it will get cancelled. It feels very surreal to not have all these events and celebrations to look forward to in the last few months of school and to not have the chance to graduate alongside my peers that I have worked alongside to get to this point, and I am sad about it for sure, but I also keep trying to remind myself how blessed I am in this whole situation. I am home right now surrounded by people who love and care about me, eating home-cooked meals every night, and am healthy. There are a lot of people who can’t say the same right now, so if by staying home and missing all of these things can help us all in the long run, I am happy to do my part. I think it is important to take time to reflect on all of these things and take time to be sad and disappointed, but reflecting on the good has also helped to keep in good spirits during these times for sure! Marissa Quinonez ‘16 I graduated in June with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work with a minor in Spanish. Due to the current pandemic circumstances, the graduation ceremony at UW-Oshkosh has been canceled. Participation at my internship has also been impacted by a reduction of ALUMNI hours and the thorough experience I am now missing out on. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to continuing my education at UW-Milwaukee this fall to pursue a Master’s degree in Social Work.
