IN MAY THE EARTH LAUGHS IN FLOWERS MAY 2022 - ISSUE #354 INSIDE WOLRA Our return to normalcy is well underway. We are working on projects for this summer and events, activities and functions are underway and being planned. Our hope is for a great summer that all WOTL residents can enjoy and in our community. As part of getting back to normal, we will be re-instating regular General Meetings effective in May and then every few months. The next General Meeting is scheduled for May 17th at 7pm and it will be a joint face-to-face meeting in the Rec Centre and on Zoom. Hopefully everyone will be able to attend. We have been reporting on numerous projects for the last few months and things are heating up now. As you know, we have been conducting a vote to approve expenditures over the last week of April (results of this vote were not available at this writing). A positive membership vote will allow the approval of funds for the installation of sunshades in the Outdoor Living Centre (OLC). The sunshades, which will cover the west facing opening and ½ of the south facing opening will be purchased from EC Awnings. They are a local company that have been advertising with us for many years in both the Neighbourly News and our telephone directory, and have done excellent work for many WOTL residents, so we are moving down a solid path with this organization. The sunshades will allow for excellent shading and sun blockage during the day and early evening. The shades and mechanism will be weatherproof, attractive and easily operated by anyone using the OLC. So, in total, we will complete the OLC with furnishings (new tables and chairs), excellent A/V equipment, a multi-purpose storage and event facility, and functioning sunshades this summer. This will make the OLC a great addition to our amenities in WOTL. With the completion of extensive inputs, planning, designing, permitting, funding approvals (both Frontier and WOLRA), construction, and COVID setbacks like material shortages and construction delays, we are finally coming to the full realization of a dream that was started by Al Smith several years ago – so, all I can say is that I love it when a plan comes together… In addition to the OLC, we still have landscaping projects, including new pathways, that will be underway this Spring. And, work has begun on creating an ice skating rink for next winter. Related to my heads-up regarding the pool in last month’s Inside WOLRA article, the pool has been drained, the old liner removed, and the pool measured for a new liner to be made. Work will commence soon to repair the cracks in the pool before the new liner can be installed. Frontier is still shooting for a May 24 weekend opening of the pool – there is a lot of work to be done yet, so we will keep our fingers crossed for an on-time completion. It is just weeks before our Garage Sale is held on Saturday, May 14th. We have been unable to hold a community garage sale for the past two years due to COVID, so we are hoping for a great day, with a lot of stuff to sell and many eager buyers (see page 19 for important information). I want to thank Brenda Little and all the garage sale volunteers who put in hours and days of work to make this event a success. Already the workload is significant with sales preparation and sales day still yet to come, so our community and a local charity will benefit from everyone’s efforts – a big thank you to everyone for a great job. We recently had a Coffee Morning and more are planned, so please watch for these excellent social events. Plus, I have it on good authority that a huge Summer Bash/Sock Hop is being planned with live music, food, and dancing for June 18 (see page 18). Please watch the Neighbourly News and E-blasts for more information because this event will be well attended and hopefully be a great kickoff to the summer and our return to normalcy. IN MAY THE EARTH LAUGHS IN FLOWERS MAY 2022 - ISSUE #354 Continued from previous page… You may have noticed that our Theatre Group has once again resumed operation. The group is hard at work rehearsing plays and sketches for an upcoming show. The group is planning a full show for June 25, 26 and 27 (see page 25). The show will follow in the tradition of previous shows and be entertaining and generally hilarious (go ahead ask anyone who has attended before). By the way, the Theatre Group is planning a small expansion to the stage. This expansion will be able to be added, then stored when not in use and allow for a bigger, better, more functional stage for plays, and events of every kind…more to come on this. So, there are many things on the go and hopefully, we will all enjoy our return to normalcy and the many benefits our community has to offer this summer…stay safe. Business cards like the one on the right can be found in the Rec Centre library. Feel free to take some for your purse or wallet in case you have occasion to hand one out sometime. If you use the services of one of our advertisers, please tell them you found them in the NN or our telephone directory. All advertising revenue goes back into our community! As most of you may be aware, the April NN issue had some technical difficulties. The link to the April issue was sent out only to discover that most of the hyperlinks within the issue did not function. And adding insult to injury, it is possible that we were blissfully unaware of this problem for months in earlier issues! There were many frustrating hours spent researching possible solutions to the problem and tearing out of hair (our own). For me, the impact of not finding a solution was unthinkable. Yes I know, considering the world situation this hardly seems earthshattering, but it was to me in my world. Especially with regard to our advertisers whose ads are supposed to be interactive. Thanks to the ‘dog with a bone’ teamwork of Simon Arcand, Ken Killingbeck and even me (aka Drama Queen)... WE DID IT! And as you are aware, on March 29th another link to the now functioning April Our Neighbourly News Magazine issue was sent out to all. So sorry for the inconvenience. Maybe in June or even July, and I’ll introduce myself all over again to our new residents! Watch this spot. Meanwhile remember: “In this world of onrushing events - even just a ‘one-breath’ meditation - straightening the back, clearing the mind for a moment - is a refreshing island in the stream. Although the word ‘meditation’ has mystical and maybe religious connotations for many people, it is a simple and plain activity.” (Gary Snyder) Just breathe. Especially now. IN MAY THE EARTH LAUGHS IN FLOWERS MAY 2022 - ISSUE #354 The best things in life are the people we love, the places we’ve been, and the memories we’ve made along the way. Spring is here and we are finally able to move about, whether it be flying, cruising, driving or taking the train! We made it through what was hopefully the worst of the COVID ‘hiatus from normalcy’. WOTL’s Travel Club is celebrating its 5th birthday this year. Sometimes it is hard to believe how time flies. We started in 2017 with one trip to Stratford and St. Jacobs and added many trips over the past years until everything changed. A tiny but virulent virus caused us to cancel our so highly anticipated trip to the Agawa Canyon in 2020 and 2021, putting us in a travel holding pattern for the past two years. We truly hope we can get back to exploring destinations together which is how we started out. Five years ago there was a strong interest in visiting places and traveling together based on cost sharing. The benefits? Well, trips were planned by an experienced travel guide, no driving for individuals required, no highway driving or night driving and no additional profit margin added. We take advantage of group pricing and have fun making new friends in our WOTL community. Let's start again. Deborah Erler, Gail Kreutz and Christine Trulsen are YOUR team to organize, budget, handle the money and guide the trips. All on a volunteering basis. Christine plans and guides, Deborah and Gail are in charge of managing the funds and all 3 women have our travel interests and memories as their goal. The way it works is as following: 1. Members of the Travel Club are informed first (before the rest of the community). To become a member you let one of us know and pay a $20pp one-time refundable deposit. 2. After a trip is proposed, interest is collected by signing up for it. Usually a signup sheet is placed in the library at the Rec Centre or you can email Christine Trulsen christinetrulsen@gmail.com. If more than 30 people sign up, the trip is then planned and budgeted. 3. When people sign up, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required. If an individual cannot go, it is the responsibility of that individual to find a replacement. 4. A timeline is established for final payments and communication will be via email with participants. 5. After each trip the participants will receive a balance sheet regarding income and expenses. We are working with transparency and are an absolutely non-profit group interested in traveling together. Please remember, we are all volunteers. We are neighbours and friends. We are not a business. So, it will look different from the trips you booked with travel agencies. For the remainder of this year (2022) we are proposing another trip to Stratford with a visit to the St. Jacob's Farmer's Market. The famous musical "Chicago" is on the schedule for the Stratford Festival Theatre. It will be either in June or August, on a Wednesday or Friday with an overnight in St. Jacobs and a visit to the Farmer's Market the following day, Thursday or Saturday https:// www.stratfordfestival.ca/WhatsOn/PlaysAndEvents/Production/Chicago. No details have been confirmed; expression of interest is the first step. In July we have a chance to see ABBA MIA! in Campbellford at the Westben Barn Theatre https:// www.westben.ca/22-abba-mia. And for October we might enjoy a trip to Toronto to visit the spooky "Casa Loma", all decorated for Halloween with leisure time and city tour in Toronto https://casaloma.ca/project/ legends-of-horror/. If you have any ideas or places to go please share with us and we will inquire about interest. For 2023 we did have plans for a tour to Newfoundland, we have the postponed trip to the Agawa Canyon and a long-standing request for a winter stay in Quebec City with the lights and snow. We will see how COVID is releasing us from its grip and will start planning for future trips soon. Let's make new friends, new memories and see new (or old) places. Cheers to health, travel and fun! IN MAY THE EARTH LAUGHS IN FLOWERS MAY 2022 - ISSUE #354 DO YOU HAVE SOME SPARE TIME? During the last two years of hibernation, things have changed. Many people have not yet come out to play again, or get back into a routine outside of the home. This is having a severe effect on our communities and organizations, especially those that require volunteers. The two I am high- lighting are the ones I personally have experience with, or knowledge of. The Canadian Cancer Society is desperately short of drivers to take clients to appointments at various medical facilities. We all hope we may never need to use this service, but many do and rely on the volunteer driver. For more information contact: The Cancer society @ 1 888 939 3333. The Regent Theatre is open again for movies and live events. Various positions are available, for example: Box Office, Ushering, Concession, Bar, to name but a few. Time commitment as a volunteer can be as little as a one and a half hour shift. For more information go to the theregentthea- tre.org. As with all volunteer work, the more volunteers, the lighter the load for everyone involved and services and events will be available for all in the future. Jean Perkin 613 339 1752 BOCCE We are sure that Spring will soon be here and we are looking forward to the start of the 2022 Bocce season! Once again, we will play each Monday morning.
