Dear OLG Families, Welcome to Haley Widger, our new PE Coach! With the return of our older students, I’ve given up the role of PE teacher. While I’ve loved being with all the K-5th graders, the students will tell you that this is not my forte! I’m also grateful to Mr. Emmanuel, our Bookkeeper, (Mr. E to the kids) who helped me with the Kinders through 5th graders! He will continue helping Ms. Haley with the Kinders through 3rd graders. With so much screen time, we are grateful that we are able to provide at least some movement activities for the students at home and at school. This week we welcomed our 6th, 7th and 8th graders back to campus. The next re-entry date will be Monday, March 15 for any families wanting to return to on-site learning. We have been so blessed with everyone holding to the 8-3/3-8 Promise. Thank you so much! I want to acknowledge a special THANK YOU, to Ms. Elizabeth Harmuth, who is our COVID-19 Liaison. Ms. Harmuth attends the weekly sessions and monthly trainings held by the Alameda County Public Health Department, keeping us updated with every single new directive, adjustment or change. If you have not had a chance to read our updated COVID-19 Reopening Plan and the COVID-19 Prevention Plan, please take some time to check them out on our website (olgweb.org). The Prevention Plan was submitted to the County in January. Part of the Prevention Plan involves a COVID-19 Inspection that is conducted and recorded bi-monthly. OLG Families, we are doing everything required and more to ensure the safety of all our staff and students. The teachers and staff are in the process of receiving the vaccination. I want to give you a heads up to one challenge we may face. Some people have had side effects from the second shot. I ended up out of work for two days after my second shot (though several of my Sisters had no ill effects from their second shot). Parents, we will do everything we can at school to cover the classes of any teacher who may need a few sick days after receiving the second vaccination
shot. If several teachers end up being out at the same time, we might have to ask particular classes to stay home just for those days. The challenge is that even through there are not that many students in each class, we cannot combine classes (cohorts). We will give you as much of a heads up as possible - and will contact you via School Messenger if you end up having to keep your child home for that day. This will only happen as a last resort and hopefully, it won’t need to be implemented. Swing into Spring! Thank you to those families who have signed up to help on the committees and have signed up to donate needed items. Please check out https://volunteersignup.org/THEP9? if you have not done so already. All hands will make for a most successful fundraiser! Please sign up today if possible; by Friday at the latest. Instead of the Mandatory General Parent Meeting in May, there will be a Mandatory Zoom General Parent Meeting on Thursday, March 18 at 7:00PM. Now, with all our classes available via in-person learning and virtual learning, we want to share a State of the School with our families. There is so much good news to share about the Catholic education we’ve been able to provide through these COVID months and there are many opportunities for us to grow and thrive as the OLG School Community. Please mark your calendar for this meeting. Don’t forget to treat your family to dinner at the Lazy Dog tonight! May these Lenten days be ones of Peace for you and your family. In Lenten Peace, S. Catholic Social Teaching 2: We Are Called to Live as Family and Community God, you made us to be part of communities, families, and countries, so that all people can share and help each other. The person is not only sacred but also social. How we organize our society in economics and politics, in law and policy directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. Marriage and family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. We believe people have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially poor and vulnerable people. (from The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) “They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the break and to the prayers. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need.” (Acts. 2: 42, 44-45) Reflection questions: Do I believe that I have a right and a duty to seek the common good? How can I ensure that our leaders make decisions that are good for everyone? Swing into Spring - Golf Tournament/Auction Have you been practicing your golf swing? Do you have any relatives or know any colleagues who would love to join us on the golf course? Reach out and invite them to our event! Committee members and donations for the golf tee bags and auction items are needed! If you really want to join a particular committee and it’s full, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do. Sch From ool o Cou ur ns e lor Hello all! This week I want to talk about the importance of children being responsible and safe online. While most of us continue to use the digital world to learn, create and participate, it’s helpful to remind our children how best to do that responsibly. While the digital world can offer great things and give us a place to create and interact with others, it is also important to be mindful of how we’re doing that. I often share with the children that being responsible online can be broken up into 3 categories: self, community, and world. Self: This is when children have responsibility for themselves, such as keeping themselves healthy, along with protecting passwords and information. Community: This is when children have responsibility for their friends and family including the people they interact with on the daily basis. World: This represents how you connect with the larger world. This would include people you don’t know, but whom your actions might affect. I encourage you to continue to check in with your children and ask them how they are taking responsibility for themselves, their community, and their world.
