Chairman's Message Our Town was the proud host of the Clean and Green Singapore 2017 Carnival on 4 November (pages 4 to 5). I am pleased that residents attended and gained useful knowledge such as upcycling tips and eco-friendly energy conservation methods from environmentalists there. Our actions today will benefit our tomorrow; starting now, let us all work to build a clean and green environment for future generations to inherit. The transportation network in our Town has expanded, with the opening of Downtown Line 3 and launch of bus service 137 (pages 8 to 9). This improves connectivity and convenience for everyone. We have also completed various improvement works across the constituencies (page 10) to provide a better home for all residents. We continue to showcase cultural festivals and rites for various ethnic groups in Singapore (pages 14 to 16). Read on to discover the deeper significance behind these customs, and appreciate the universal values across different cultures in Singapore. Lastly, I would like to wish all residents Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As we celebrate, let us remind one another to stay alert and ensure that our neighbourhood remains clean and safe.

Taking Ownership for a Cleaner Singapore Cleanliness has to start from within ourselves, residents at the Clean and Green Carnival 2017 learnt on 4 November. Held at an open field next to Boon Keng MRT station, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam noted that while Singapore has become a garden city, we are still reliant on others to clean up after us. DPM Tharman said: “The only way to solve the problem is habits – habits have to change, and being mindful of our neighbours, being mindful of our fellow citizens, and being public spirited, is what Singapore has to be all about.” 河畔种树赏心谣 Nostalgic music that harked back to Xinyao (Singapore Chinese folk songs) of yesteryears pervaded Kallang Trivista on the Riverside Tree Sunday morning of 26 November. Residents from Jalan Besar GRC and Potong Pasir SMC gathered for breakfast, followed by Planting Amid tree planting alongside the scenic Kallang River. Assoc Prof Yaacob Ibrahim, Mr Heng Chee How, Ms Denise Phua Xinyao Songs and Mr Sitoh Yih Pin planted four tembusu tikus, together with residents. With the potential of growing up to a height of 37m, these trees will provide shade for future generations at Kallang Trivista. Resident Aw Yeong, 79, supported tree planting. He said: “There is a host of benefits from planting more trees. Trees cool the air, beautify our living environment and prevent soil erosion.” TouchPoint 4 December 2017
The carnival was kick-started with DPM Tharman planting a cratoxylum cochinchinense, a native tree that can grow up to 30m in height. This was followed by the Clean and Green Singapore Awards 2017 presentation ceremony. Central Singapore District, which Jalan Besar GRC and Potong Pasor SMC are a part of, clinched the Best Community Commitment award, in recognition of its outreach efforts to attain cleanliness outcomes. Mayor of Central Singapore District, Ms Denise Phua, said that the carnival was a labour of love showcasing the eco journeys of many, towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Singapore. Besides picking up recycling and upcycling tips, participants also got a glimpse of our vibrant green economy. Another highlight was the upcycling flea market, where residents could purchase pre-loved items. Assoc Prof Yaacob Ibrahim, Mr Heng Chee How, Dr Lily Neo and Mr Sitoh Yih Pin also graced the event. Other Ministers and Mayors were present as well. December 2017 TouchPoint 5

让食物回归本味的古雅咖啡馆 Back-to-Basics Food in a Quaint Café The moment you step into AEIOU café, you know the personality of the owner, Dennis Lau – an environmentalist with a quirky sense of style. The upcycled furniture he displays in his café are eclectic. Salvaged ship windows and door frames made into dining tables, in the yellowish hue from old kettles-turned- lamps, conjure a rustic feel. Dennis explained: “Living a rustic lifestyle makes you feel like you belong to the earth. It brings feelings of happiness, self-acceptance and respect for the natural world. When you live in harmony with the earth, you grow in great reverence and admiration for its life-giving elements.” Back in 2015, Dennis discovered the café’s predecessor, an antique shop along King George’s Avenue. He immediately took a liking to the area, replete with brick-and-mortar hardware stores and cool hipster cafes. The back-to-basics approach applies to his food as well. Dennis minimises the quantity of processed food. One of the café’s signature dishes is its French Roast Chicken. Tender and succulent, every bite suffuses with the aroma of garlic, thyme and rosemary. A healthy dose of sweet potatoes completes the fibre intake for the day! Another must-have is the Avocado Coffee. The Espresso blends wonderfully well with the avocado, giving a sweet creamy aftertaste.
