ORDER FORM Thank you for supporting the Urban Ag Lab at Bowen Greenhouse with your donation. While our greenhouse is small, we do offer some tasteful and unique plants for your growing enjoyment. All plants are GMO free and are Heirloom varieties. Seeds were purchased from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and grown onsite. Because we are a very small greenhouse, some plants are extremely limited in supply. You will only be billed for the plants that we can fill in your order request. Please e-mail your order form to Jen Dumas at jdumas@waukeganparks.org. Please scroll below to see what plants we have available. The order form is on the last page. Mexican Sour Gherkin Cucumber - Incredible, small cucumber-like fruit is shaped like baby watermelons. They are good added to salads or can be pickled. They have a cucumber-like taste with a touch of lemon. The ornamental vines have tiny leaves and flowers and are perfect for the cottage garden. Very unique and fun for kids. Huge yields. Lemon Cuke Cucumber The shape, size, and color of a lemon, but with super-sweet flavor! Alas, the lemon cuke is a true cucumber, a result of naturally selecting for round, yellow fruit. The lemon cucumber originated in the late 19th century and was introduced to the U.S. in 1894. The tasty fruit is low in cucurbitacin, that naturally occurring cucumber chemical that accounts for a slightly bitter taste. The flesh is citrusy and adds a real zip to salads! Fantastic for kids’ gardens. One of our all-time favorite garden crops! Dragon's Egg Cucumber Beautiful cream-colored fruit is about the size and shape of a large egg! Mild, bitter free and sweet tasting, this little cucumber sets massive yields in our gardens. So fun to grow, and very unique looking; great for children and all who like delicious cucumbers. We were sent this heirloom favorite by Reinhard Kraft, a German seed collector, but this heirloom originated in Croatia. Chicago Pickling Cucumber - Originally bred for the markets of the Chicago area. Released in 1888, this has been the go-to pickling cuke for generations of home gardeners and canners, and we are so pleased to offer it! The thin skins take up pickling solutions readily. Black-spined fruit can be allowed to reach 7 inches without sacrificing quality, but is often harvested much smaller. Amazingly prolific, and disease resistant, too.
Boule d'Or Melon - Very sweet, pale green flesh is just marvelous. Lovely yellow fruit has a unique, lacy netting, like a work of art. This was one of our top melons in our 2003 trials, truly incredible; my all-time favorite honeydew type. Sugary flesh is so flavorful and rich. This variety is a dream for market growers and will command high prices with gourmets and chefs alike! It was listed in Vilmorin’s book, The Vegetable Garden, in 1885 but it is very rare now. Let’s make this variety a market favorite again! Jyunpaku' Okinawan Pure White Bitter Melon *RARE - A natural marvel, the purest white bitter melon variety we know of, reminds us of the elegant white pearls found off the coast of Okinawa. Interestingly, the bitter melon does develop a sweetness as it ripens. When fruit are mature, a bright red sac forms around the seeds which is sweet and bright red. The seed pulp of this variety is the best of any bitter melon we have tried, a sweet cherry candy flavor! The thick fruit averages 8-10 inches long. The fruit is typically cut thick and added to soups or shaved thin and eaten raw, the flavor is by far the most superior of all bitter melon. Apocalypse Scorpion Hot Pepper - (Caution) One of the world’s hottest peppers! Ugly, but beautiful warted fruit sure packs a punch! This punishing pepper was developed by the Italian Pepper Lovers’ Association. Thanks to over 5 grueling years of breeding for intense heat, this super hot scorpion type pepper stands a chance to be a record breaker! Buena Mulata Hot Pepper - Rare - A very rare, extremely productive, and stunning hot pepper being offered exclusively through Baker Creek! William Woys Weaver introduced us to this pepper from his grandfather's collection. His grandfather received the pepper from African- American folk artist Horace Pippin in 1944. A chameleon-like pepper that undergoes color changes during ripening; violet to pinkish-flesh color, then orange changing to brown, and eventually to a deep red. The long, round pods reach 6 to 7 inches in length and undergo a unique flavor change as they ripen, with the reds being more sweet and meatier than the violet. The stunning plants also make wonderful potted specimens. Aji Charapita - Hot Pepper - Selling for very high prices to Lima’s best chefs, this pepper is the most expensive in the world! The north Peruvian jungle native is a wild bushy plant which produces hundreds of hot, small (.25 inch), round Tepin-like peppers. The pepper has a distinct fruity, citrus aroma and is equal in heat to a cayenne pepper. Due to its rarity and hefty prices, it is often known as the "Mother of All Chilis" and is very hard to source outside of Peru. Used fresh, this tiny pepper is known to have a strong fruity flavor that gives salsas and sauces a unique tropical taste. More often, it is used as powder for various dishes. Sugar Rush Red Hot Pepper - A lipstick-red version of the super popular Sugar Rush Peach. Chris Fowler, pepper breeder extraodinaire from Wales, developed this fruity, spicy pepper. We are smitten with the long, bright red fruit, which pairs saccharine sweet with nice spicy heat. Try this dynamic and complex pepper in salsas, hot sauces or even as a spicy sweet snack eaten out of hand. Tall plants will reach 5 feet, and staking is helpful to keep plants upright.
Yellow Monster Pepper - Gigantic, behemoth elongated yellow bell peppers can grow 8 inches long by 4 inches wide! These impressive peppers are really sweet, meaty and wonderful; so pretty after they turn from green to bright sunshine-yellow. These are great fresh, fried or roasted, so you will be happy the plants produce plenty of these colossal beauties. Zucchini Golden Squash - Slender fruit is bright golden-yellow. They are as delicious as they are attractive; bush plants. Tomatillo Purple - (Physalis ixocarpa) An electric violet color and sweet fruity flavor make this the most exciting tomatillo we have seen. Plants are prolific covered in large glowing orbs that are mostly purple with just a few partially green fruit in the mix (it should be noted that more sunshine will produce a more pure purple fruit. Many are a bright violet color throughout their flesh. Much sweeter than the green types, it can be eaten right off the plant. We love this nutrient-rich fruit for making sweet and spicy salsas and for experimenting in our heirloom kitchen! Mushroom Basket Tomato - 75 days. A favorite variety, introduced from Russia. One of the most beautiful and attractive tomatoes we have ever grown. It is very ribbed and pleated, but otherwise very uniform, large and perfect looking, being a vibrant watermelon-pink color with cream colored speckles that really make the fruit sparkle and glisten. Short, determinate plants produce a large mass of these fruit in a thick clustered area in the center of the plant. The flavor is sweet, mild and good; flesh is firm and the seeds are very few. Martino's Roma Tomato - 70-80 days. Determinate. Fantastic yields of richly flavorful plum- shaped tomatoes, on compact plants that require very little staking! Resistant to early blight, reliable for home or market gardens! The paste-type fruit weighs in at 2-3 ounces, dry-fleshed and very meaty with few seeds. Great for sauces, salsas and pastes.
Sunrise Bumblebee Tomato - 70 days. Chefs love the luminous swirls of reds and oranges, inside the fruit and out! Everyone loves the sweet, fruity taste, too! Oblong little fruit weighs barely an ounce, and sometimes shows a pronounced beak at the blossom end. Another member of the incredible new ‘Artisan’ series. Otome Watermelon - The perfect melon for small families! This pretty little melon from Nara Prefecture in Japan is extra early to mature. 3-4 pound fruit has an attractive light green skin and blushed salmon-rose colored flesh. This is ideal for short season gardeners. Plants are impressively productive, and flesh is super sweet and delicious. Agastache - Navajo Sunset - Delicious minty-citrus tea plant; a must in the herb garden and kitchen! Southwest native perennial that is irresistible to hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and other Beneficial's. Agastache Navajo Sunset wafts an incredible citrus scent; the open airy plants produce beautiful orange blooms. this variety is water thrifty and thrives in poor soil. Plants reach 28 inches tall and 30 inches wide! Golden Ball Chrysanthemum - (Tanacetum parthenium) Equally appropriate to the herb or flower garden, this perennial, highly ornamental form of feverfew boasts attractive bright yellow flowers all season long. The flower form is nearly spherical, made up of very closely packed petals. The plants are very compact, reaching to 18” tall and wide. The lemon-yellow blooms are produced almost non-stop. Anise Hyssop - (Agastache foeniculum) This herb is used to make one of the best herb teas; the leaves possess a naturally sweet, wonderful anise taste and fragrance. Lovely purple flowers that bees love; many uses, including medicinal. Stevia - (Stevia rebaudiana) A hard-to-find herb that is grown for the famous Stevia leaves which, when dried, are used to sweeten drinks and desserts. Much sweeter than sugar, stevia powder is reported to be 300 times sweeter! Not winter-hardy, except in zones 8-10. From Brazil and Paraguay. The chemical companies who make artificial sweeteners hate this plant and have tried to make it illegal. But I just love it!
Deluxe Rainbow Mix Canterbury Bells - Biennial. Incredible huge flowers! Tall spikes of long- lasting, bell-shaped flowers feature rich tones of purple, lavender, plum, pink, and white to cream. A cottage garden staple for centuries, it makes a fine cut flower. It was offered by Comstock, Ferre & Co. in 1856. Crackerjack Mix African Marigold - The giant African type that is popular with gardeners coast to coast; the big double blooms come in shades of lemon yellow to deep orange, and the 30- inch plants are profuse.
