OPEN DAYS 2019 THE TREND AND KNOWLEDGE FORUM OF THE LIGHTING INDUSTRY 27TH + 28TH MAY 2019 IN PADERBORN
EDITORIAL For the 8th time, the Lightpower Open Days in Paderborn will be a buzzing hub of dialogue and knowledge transfer for an exclusive international specialist audience. Over the years, the Open Days have established themselves as one of the most important meeting places for our industry, a place where, experience, technical excellence, imagination and new ideas unite. One focus of the Open Days 2019 is a tribute to Woodstock, mother of all festivals, on its 50th anniversary. With “3 Days of Peace & Music” it crowned the climax of the peace-loving hippie movement in 1969. Chip Monck has not only helped shape Woodstock as a lighting designer, but also as Master of Ceremonies. Chip is living Rock’n’Roll history. His lighting design works include ‘greats’ like: Monterey Pop Festival, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones. Chip will tell us about his incredible Rock’n’Roll legacy and narrate some previously unheard anecdotes. The heart of the Open Days 2019 will be a series of renowned speakers. They will talk about their extraordinary and inspiring projects. Paule Constable is renowned for her award-winning lighting designs for perfor- mances at the Royal Opera, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Metropolitan Opera NYC and many other venues in Paris, Salzburg, Strasbourg, Berlin and Brussels. Nick Whitehouse has proven to be one of the top LDs worldwide with his Concert Touring lighting design for Justin Timberlake (The 20/20 Experience and The Man of the Woods) and Carry Underwood (The Cry Pretty Tour 360). Mikki Kunttu has the best references in various fields of application and caused a sensation with his design for the ballet Swanlake. He is currently working for Cirque du Soleil: “ALEGRIA – In a New Light“ in Montreal. Kees van Oostrum, President of the American Society of Cinematographers (ACS), Hollywood, will present his wealth of experience on the subject of lighting for movies. His works, including “Medusa‘s Child” and “Spartacus”, have won several awards. Beyond that we have again exciting and informative tech seminar topics for you. Besides the topic “Work easier and faster with GDTF + MVR” (General Device Type Format + My Virtual Rig) and “Control concepts in response to increa- sing fixture complexity”, a tech seminar “Opportunities and limits of LED, discharge and Laser lamp sources in comparison” is being offered. Presented by professional speakers, the tech seminars are extremely profound. The impressions of the first day will end with a rich barbecue and cool drinks, accom- panied by a first-class live band from San Francisco. Best regards, Ralph-Jörg Wezorke and the whole Lightpower Team 2 3
ROCK’N’ROLL LEGACY One focus of the Open Days 2019 is a tribute to Woodstock, mother of all festivals, on its glorious 50th anniversary. Although there were already well-known music festivals before 1969 and after, Wood- stock has gone down in history as the most legendary! With “3 Days of Peace & Music” it crowned the climax of the peace-loving hippie movement in 1969. Like magic pilgrimage, young Americans from all over the country set off for Bethel, New York, and more than 400,000 of them actually made it to there. The festival’s Oscar-winning documentary has carried the Woodstock myth out into the world. Technically, however, the circumstances of the time were far from the standards of today! The stage roofs were hardly load-bearing, the spotlights were seriously less powerful and the sound systems often only had visual rather than sonic impact! These conditions presented the technicians with challenges that were partly unimaginable © Henry Diltz now. At the same time, however, this was also part of the origin of our entire industry. At the Woodstock Festival one man in this environment mastered both the technology – and especially the lighting – and simultaneously spoke to the amassed crowds as a ‘Master of Ceremonies’. His story is a story of that time. He is known as “Chip” Monck and as the “Grandfather of Rock’n’Roll Productions”. “CHIP” MONCK Edward Herbert Beresford “Chip” Monck is truly a living Rock’n’Roll legend and a history- maker. A look at his CV is a look into the trail- blazing annals of Rock. Numerous iconic artists and events bear the signature of his lighting design, to name but a few: Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, © Henry Diltz The Rolling Stones, the 1984 Olympic Games, Monterey Pop Festival and Newport Rhode Island Folk Festival. Chip has not only staged Rock’n’Roll, he has lived and experienced it. It was Chip who at the Woodstock Festival as Master of Ceremonies warned the audience to stay away from “the Brown Acid”. It was in Chip’s apartment where Bob Dylan wrote “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”, Chip who once saved Jim Morrison from being arrested by the police. It was also Chip who installed mirrors over the Rolling Stones and lit them with follow-spots from the floor to have more light and vibrant colors on stage. Additionally, Chip’s talents have extended to hugely successful projects on Broadway (e.g. Rocky Horror Show) and in movies (e.g. The Rose). In 2003, Chip received the Parnelli Lifetime Achievement Award for his work. Chip’s life story and memoirs would fill numerous books so we’re even more excited to have him as a guest at the Open Days to hear his experiences ‘live-and-direct’.
