SEPTEMBER 2021 Chatterboard JACK BERGMAN '70 | Radiology in West Africa Many years ago while lecturing at radiology workshops in East & West Africa I realised the extremely poor healthcare that was available in pretty much every African country I visited. It became my passion to improve this healthcare. Radiology & pathology have become cornerstones of modern medicine. One cannot practice effective medicine without these specialities. Being in the radiology field and having evolved a network of digitally interconnected practices around SA meant that I had one of the cornerstone limbs of modern medicine which could be utilised to at least uplift the standard of healthcare on the continent and by so doing hopefully improve patient outcomes. This set in motion a plan to establish radiological practices in as many African countries as I could. For this, I needed a proof of concept (POC), for countries outside of SA, and Ghana turned out, for a number of reasons, the country with the best opportunities to do this. On 1 July 2016, we commenced building a facility to house the radiology practice, in Accra and opened our doors on 1 July 2017. My gym master was Harry McKewan and later Nico Singleton. I was in the team from Standard 7 right up to Matric. My tennis captain was Percy Higgo and he was my Latin teacher as well. I was the solo drummer in the Cape Band. The drum major was Michael Davidson. When I left school my mother asked me what I want to study at varsity. I said I wanted to take a BA Broadcasting degree at UCT – that was my life’s ambition! However, she insisted I take a degree in architecture, as my father was an architect. Being weak-minded I reluctantly agreed to try it out. The result, I did not have a clue what was going on and left UCT after 6 months. Having worked for many radio stations, I joined ‘Radio Today’. Their contact points are in Johannesburg area 1485 medium wave and outside Johannesburg on channel 869 DSTV. I do a program lasting two hours called “In the Mood” every Sunday evening at 8 pm. I present the music of yesteryear eg. Artists like Francis Laine, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald etc. My email is Gloria.isaacson@gmail.com. Here’s to happy listening. Kind regards, Rollo Berman ‘56
SEPTEMBER 2021 Feel Good News THE GENEROSITY OF THE GREY Jonty Gluckman '66 is a loyal benefactor to The Grey and his recent donation of a 200kVA Genset to the schools was received with great appreciation by the Rector Chris Erasmus and Headmaster Grant Butler. Jonty kindly offered the generator to the school as his company, Mafika Engineering, which is based in Johannesburg no longer needed the unit. SEPTEMBER 2021 Looking Back with Ian Pringle In response to the article on Tom Dean – Peter Ford '64 had this to say on this remarkable gentleman I so enjoyed in the last Old Greys’ Union newsletter the article pertaining to Tom Dean I thought I would like to add the following little story. When we talk of cricket being played at Grey in the late 50's and 60's one immediately remembers and recalls our much admired and respected friend Uncle Tom Dean who coached cricket at Grey for nearly 30 years. It was through his enthusiasm and love for the sport that I learnt from him that cricket was more than a game but rather “A way of life!" Some 20 years ago my late brother Bob and I were on our way to Port Elizabeth to watch the MCC play against the Proteas at St. George's Park. On route from Port Alfred we popped in to see The Deans and drop a few "goodies" for them. They were residents at the Old Age Home in Alexandria. Uncle Tom had his transistor radio at his side and was ready to listen to the "Ball by ball" commentary of this test. He did not have access to DSTV which was carrying the broadcast. Having later said our goodbyes we proceeded to enjoy two days of cricket while our wives engaged in retail therapy! On our return to the farm Bob and I had a chat. We agreed that it would be a good idea for Uncle Tom to have access to DSTV and be able to watch the game that was his whole life. I set about making probably 10 phone calls and over a short period collected over R20, 000. The support for our idea was overwhelming. A small trust account was opened and within a short period Uncle Tom was gifted a new television set that was linked to DSTV and he was able to enjoy full sporting coverage. The Deans were thus provided for in retirement to enjoy this service. But it was not all about cricket as we know that Tom had a love for horse racing! If there was perhaps at any time a shortfall in the account it was always readily topped up. One of the donors was Chris Murray who was Master in Charge of Cricket at Grey during Tom’s time and also Neville Mallet, who despite not being an Old Grey being most supportive. In total then about a dozen old boys donors who through their kind generosity made life a little more easy for a Coach whom they had so much respect and to whom we can all say well batted!
SEPTEMBER 2021 In Memory We extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the following Old Greys who have passed on: Garrick Rodrigues - Class of 1978 Garrick Rodrigues passed away unexpectedly but peacefully 4 months after some very serious postoperative complications and infections to which he eventually and sadly succumbed. The son of Flash and Cathy Rodrigues, a family very well known to the rugby fraternity of PE and Crusaders. He was a wonderful and colourful character and will be sorely missed. Sincere condolences to his wife Tracey, and children Hayley, Bryce and Kelsey, and Grandchildren James and Riley and a soon-to-be little Labrou girl. Neil Solomons – Class of 1972 Neil passed away on 21st August 2021 in Penang after an illness that he bore with great steadfastness. Neil graduated MB ChB from the University of Cape Town in 1979 and then proceeded to pass his surgical specialist exams in both London and later in Edinburgh. His higher surgical training was undertaken at the Royal Free Hospital, London and the Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford which he completed in 1992. In 2010 he decided on new pastures and moved with his wife Jennifer to Penang where he was appointed Consultant Surgeon in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology at Lana Wah Ee Hospital. Neil was clever but nevertheless interacted very well with patients and he will be greatly missed. In his final illness, Neil was lovingly cared for by his wife Jennifer (nee Dickin). They had over ten years happily enjoying the life and beaches of Penang with their beloved dogs. He adored his Bearded Collie, Themba. Neil leaves behind his two daughters and three grandchildren. Daughter Lucy, who lives in Vancouver Island with her two children Cain and Addison; and Kate who lives in London with her son Blake. Thelma Collins – The first lady to be awarded Honorary Membership of the Old Grey’s Union It was scarcely a week after Thelma was made an Honorary Member of the Union that she sadly passed on at the age of 64. She had been suffering from the effects of cancer for a number of months and until the near end retained her vibrant poise and radiant smile being ever optimistic and cheerful. Our sympathies are extended to her husband Dave '70 and their two sons Jonathan and Matthew who are also Old Greys. Thelma hailed from Hofmeyr becoming a boarder at Collegiate and was later to marry Dave. She was a huge support to him in his building contracting business but still found the time and energy to become very much part of the Union and the Grey Schools. We dare say that she lived for all things Grey ever helpful and being of assistance especially in the Union office. She was buried from Tahara House in the Jewish Cemetery in North End. Her funeral was very well attended by old friends who had come to bid her farewell and to offer their condolences to the family. It was a dignified occasion yet there were smiles among the many who recalled her with great fondness as she was laid to rest. As the legendary songwriter, Irving Berlin said, “The song has ended but the melody lingers on”. Varrin Karp - Class of 1971 Varrin spent his whole school life at Grey. From SubA to Matric. He made lifelong friends and enjoyed his school days immensely. He was an avid sportsman and an excellent rugby player. He was known as one of the best in his position as 8th man. He was also a very committed lifesaver, and he instructed a large number of up and coming lifesavers at the Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club where he earned himself honorary life membership. Varrin had his own agency business calling on pharmacies in the Eastern Cape. He lost his long battle with cancer at the end of July. He is survived by his wife, Wendy, and his son, Philip.
SEPTEMBER 2021 Bart Das – Class of 1967 Bart came to Grey from Redhouse Primary and matriculated as a member of that legendary XD Class of the same year. Although only 13 in number the class boxed far above its weight and dominated in most school activities except in Academics! Bart was no exception and was awarded colours for swimming and made a School Prefect! A rather quiet individual in relation to his peers at Grey, he had their full respect retaining a close relationship and attending all Reunions. His untimely passing brought on by cancer brought back memories of a great guy and the fun times that the class enjoyed. In later life, he settled in Cape Town and established a well-known food packaging business in Milnerton which was to become very much a family concern. Not content with this he bought the property at Franschoek and set about developing his own brand of wine. He was set for even greater success until he fell ill and passed on. Our sincere sympathies are extended to his family. Mike Lincey - Class of 1965 Mike grew up in Redhouse and was one of the gang which travelled to and from school by train every day. He was an excellent sailor in his day, won his provincial colours in the Finn class, and was Commodore of Redhouse Yacht Club. Mike joined the freight forwarding and logistics group Lochhead, White & Wormesley in 1967 and rose to become a director and partner. He retired in 2015. He had a long association with The Grey as his wife Judy was Secretary of the Junior School for many years. He seldom missed an Old Grey Dinner. Mike was a member of the 1964 Stayers group which meets regularly (pandemic permitting) at the Old Grey Club and will be remembered for his quiet sense of humour and common sense. Sadly, he succumbed to Parkinson’s in June. Our sincere condolences to Judy and his family.
