History OF THE PLUMS Plum varieties and dates of ripening 1827 Pershore Yellow Egg Plum discovered in Tiddesley Wood by George Crooke, publican of Butchers Arms, Church Street. MID JULY Herman, Cherry Plum (Myrobalan) LATE JULY Opal, River’s Early Prolific, Sanctus 1833 George’s son Thomas Hubertus grew the distinctive plum which became widespread across Pershore. EARLY AUGUST Oullin’s Gage, Czar, Blue Tit, Blaisdon Red Pershore Purple plum, formally MID AUGUST Pershore Yellow Egg, Purple Pershore, 1877 known as Martin’s seedling was created by Walter Martin from Victoria, Jubilee, Swan, Avalon, Belle de Drakes Broughton by crossing Louvain, Excalibur, Heron, Ontario the Purple Diamond Plum with LATE AUGUST the Rivers Early Prolific plum. Cambridge Gage, Cox’s Emperor (Queen’s Crown), Reeve’s, Warwickshire 1900- The Pershore Purple Plum Drooper, Grove’s Late Victoria was planted and grown in preference to the Victoria EARLY SEPTEMBER 1925 plum because of its natural resistance to Silver Leaf Kirke’s Blue, Giant Prune, Seneca, disease. Laxton’s Cropper, Edwards, Pond’s Seedling, Monarch MID SEPTEMBER 1914- During the food shortage Haganta, Valor, President, Common during World War One Damson 1918 Pershore fruit and plums were transported by train throughout the country. Plus there’s live music all day, including the Perfect Vintage duo who will be taking us Through the Decades from the 1950s to present day, with hits from acts including Elvis, Abba and Connie Francis, a sure fire way to get you dancing! Sunday 26 August - All Day As well as live music and great food and drink, we’ll be hosting a range of inflatables and family activities and games. Make sure you buy your tickets for the evening, with the tremendous Black Knights performing your old favourites until late, and our annual spectacular firework display in our riverside gardens from 8.30pm. Please note that tickets will be required from 6pm, available for purchase on the door or at The Angel Hotel. Monday 27 August - 10am - 7pm It’s family games and activities all day, with water zorbs, climbing walls, henna tattoos, slides, and much more.
