BELEM (AMAZON), BRAZIL BEL301: A TOUR OF BELEM’S MOST REVERED CULTURAL SITES - OCTOBER 24, 2021 | $85PP 4 HOURS | MEALS: NONE Not only is Belem considered the gateway to the Amazon, but it is also a city filled with charming character and historical significance. This tour allows you to experience several of its cultural highlights. Meet your guide at the port and drive first to the Teatro da Paz, a cherished jewel of the city. This stunning neo-classical theater exudes architectural grace and elegance. Built in the late 1800s from the wealth generated by the rubber industry, it was designed by the same architect who also designed the famous theater in Manaus. Following your visit here, make your way to the Museum of Sacred Art. Opened in 1998, the museum is the first of its genre in the entire Amazon region. The museum is part of a complex formed by the 17th-century Igreja de Santo Alexandre Church and Palace Episcopal. Considered one of the most important museums in Brazil, it houses over 300 sacred art pieces. Next, a short walk brings you to the nearby Forte do Presepio, location where the settlement of Belem was founded in 1616. The original construction was little more than mud and sticks but has been expanded and renovated over the following centuries. The purpose of the fort was to end English, Dutch and French poaching upon Portugal’s claim to the vast natural resources of the Amazon. The main attraction here is the Museo do Encontro which recreates the history of the Tupinambá Indians, before, during and after the Portuguese settlement. On display are items such as china and coins and there are some original canons from the 19th century. Your final stop is at the Jewel Hub São José Liberto Museum. As you browse the exhibits, it’s hard to believe that just a few years ago, this location was a turbulent prison. Following a rebellion in 2000, the inmates were moved to another location, thus opening the door for the museum to take up residence. Items on display here include gold, diamonds, emeralds, tourmalines, and other precious and semi-precious gems. The museum gives visitors a great look at the region’s mining history. Be sure not to miss the room that houses the state’s first jewelry collection. After viewing some jaw-dropping gems, rejoin your coach and transfer back to the pier. Special Note: This tour includes just over 2.5 hours of mild to moderate walking/standing that includes some steps and uneven surfaces. While the venues are not wheelchair accessible, the tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, a companion to assist them, and are able to make their own way on and off the transportation and wish to remain on the coach during the stops. Because of the amount of walking, the tour may not be suitable for those with walking difficulties, but they also have the option of remaining on the coach during the stops. We recommend wearing weather appropriate comfortable clothing; flat walking shoes; a sun cap; sunglasses and sunscreen. Shoulders and legs and midriffs must be covered when entering religious sites. It’s a scenic 90-minute boat trip from the pier in Belem to Boa Vista. FORTALEZA, BRAZIL FOR301: DISCOVER THE LANDMARK ATTRACTIONS OF FORTALEZA’S PAST AND PRESENT - OCTOBER 27, 2021 | $99PP 4.5 HOURS | MEAL: NONE Touch on some of Fortaleza’s notable landmarks on this tour that gives you a glimpse of the city’s historic past as well as present-day life. Fortaleza’s origins date back to before 1726, when it officially became a city. The Portuguese were the first non-native settlers and their struggle with the Dutch for Fort Schooneborch is what gave birth to Fortaleza, what was then just a small village. Leaving the pier, commence a panoramic drive that passes by areas such as Futuro Beach, the Dunas district, the President Castelo Branco Mausoleum and Martyr’s Square, all of which perfectly illustrate the diversity and beauty of this charming city. It is infused with a blend of modern buildings as well as historical buildings, such as the Gothic-style Metropolitan Cathedral where you will make your first stop. The third largest cathedral in Brazil, construction on it began in 1939 but wasn’t completed until 1978. Said to have been inspired by the grand cathedral in Cologne, it is nothing short of impressive. Continuing on, visit Fortaleza’s Tourism Center, which was formerly the old jail, and then the Jose de Alencar Theater. Opened in 1910, the theater’s architecture is a colorful and eclectic Art Nouveau style and in 1975 it was listed as a historic structure by the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute. Next, make your way to the nearby St. Sebastian Market. This very popular public market houses stalls that sell a multitude of products ranging from local fruits and vegetables to utensils to handicraft items. Have some time to browse here before heading to your final stop, an exterior visit at the Dragão do Mar Center of Art and Culture which is located in the area of Iracema Beach. Afterwards, return to the pier where your tour ends. Special Note: This tour includes approximately two hours of mild walking/standing that includes some steps. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests. We recommend wearing weather appropriate comfortable clothing; flat walking shoes; a sun cap; sunglasses and sunscreen. FOR302: COLONIAL AQUIRAZ AND THE COLORFUL HUES OF MORRO BRANCO BEACH - OCTOBER 27, 2021 | $129PP 7 HOURS | MEAL: NONE Travel outside the city of Fortaleza to the colonial town of Aquiraz and Morro Branco Beach, a scenic area that has been featured in several TV and move productions that is famous for its colorful cliffs and sand dunes. Your day starts with a relaxing one-hour drive to Aquiraz, a coastal town with both historical and touristic importance that gained village status in 1699. The architecture found within the city showcases a diversity of European, Indian, and African influences that are representative of its various evolutions. Today, you can still see evidence of the vestiges of Portuguese wealth in the sumptuous mansions that can be found in the downtown area. On arrival, first visit the main church, Igreja da Matriz, considered one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the region. From here, move on to the Sao Jose de Ribamar Museum. Located in a former jail, the museum was created in 1967 for the purpose of preserving the region’s religious history. Within its walls are some wonderful displays of sacred art pieces that date from the 17th – 20th centuries. Continuing on, make your way to the Colonial Museum which captures Brazilian culture and history in displays that focus on the importance of the sugar industry and the role it played in Aquiraz’s economic history. Leaving Aquiraz behind, make the scenic drive to Morro Branco beach. The multi-hued sands and towering cliffs here make for a dramatic backdrop to the nearly empty pristine beaches. It’s easy to see why it is often used as a filming location. Take advantage of your free time here to grab lunch and explore on your own. Perhaps hire a local guide and venture into the labyrinths formed between the dunes and cliffs, or shop for its famous handmade glass works. Whatever you choose, your time in this town, which is both sophisticated and rustic, won’t soon be forgotten. When your Morro Branco visit concludes, rejoin your guide and coach for the drive back to the ship. NATAL, BRAZIL NAT301: BRAZILIAN FOLK TRADITIONS - THE CAPOEIRA AND THE FORRÓ DANCES - OCTOBER 28, 2021 | $69PP 3 HOURS | MEAL: NONE Of the many things Brazil embraces as part of its heritage, authentic dance is one of them. This tour will introduce you to two dances that truly reflect the diversity of this area of Brazil, the African fight dance of Capoeira and the more regional, Forró. Travel from the pier to the outskirts of Natal and the community of Boa Vontade. On arrival, you will be warmly greeted and then invited to sit back and enjoy what is to come. A local group of Capoeira dancers and dance masters who visit the poorer communities to teach children the art of this African fight dance, will now treat you to an exhibition performance. Brought to Brazil by slaves in the 16th century, it is best described as a combination of martial arts and dance that is characterized by quick, powerful moves and a certain amount of aerobatics thrown in. The action-packed sequences make it quite fascinating to watch. Next, travel to Natal’s Tourism Center for a visit and introduction to the Brazilian dance called Forró that originated here in the northeast. This equally unique cultural dance, while lively in nature, is decidedly more intimate, flirtatious, and performed as a couple. While some compare it to Samba, lovers of the dance (or forrozeiros) will be quick to assure you it is not. Following your visit and dance demonstration, you will drive back to the pier where your tour concludes. Special Note: This tour includes approximately two hours of mild walking/standing that includes some steps. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests. We recommend wearing weather appropriate comfortable clothing; flat walking shoes; a sun cap; sunglasses and sunscreen. Unlike typical cashew trees, when the branches of this tree touch the ground, it puts down roots and keeps growing. It is quite something to behold. From here, make your way to the 16th-century Portuguese Fort Reis Magos which was the foundation of Natal.
