Itinerary - Amalfi Coast Walking Tour Day 1 – Travelling to the Amalfi Coast We depart from Rome at 10am and start our journey south toward the Amalfi Coast. We have a few interesting stops along the way. Our first stop is at Montecassino, site of the major WWII battle, where we visit the Allies cemetery. Seeing the site of this famous battle is a real eye opener, and quite moving. Montecassino A short drive after lunch takes us to the start of the Amalfi Peninsula and the town of Vietri Sul Mare. This is the major ceramic producing town of the Amalfi Coast. The key production is of the vibrantly coloured ceramics that are made using the maiolica method. We visit a manufacturer where we can see the ceramics being produced and painted, continuing a tradition that started in the 1500s. We see the incredible array of colours and creative designs of their finished product. After looking through the town of Vietri Sul Mare we make our way along the stunning Amalfi Coast road, with hairpin bends and amazing views in equal measure - you'll realise the value in having a professional driver for the trip. We reach the town Ceramics of Vietri of Amalfi in the early evening, where we stay for the duration of the tour. The town of Amalfi is really the heart of the Amalfi Coast - the centre of the marine republic of the 11th century, and still now it has a proud community living and working here. The depth of history here is profound, but equally it is a wonderful place to sit in the piazza, enjoy a coffee and watch the world go by. Our hotel, the Hotel Residence, is wonderfully situated on the waterfront. One side you have uninterrupted sea views, and a The road to Amalfi few steps the other way you have ‘la dolce vita’ of Italian piazza life. Tonight we dine together, having our first introduction to the cuisine of the Amalfi Coast. The piazza in Amalfi Included: Dinner (3 courses including wine) www.italywithpleasure.com
Itinerary - Amalfi Coast Walking Tour Included: Dinner (3 courses including wine) Day 2 – Walking the 'Valley of the Mills' This is our first walking day, and the trails that we follow start near the town of Scala. Scala is in the hills above Amalfi, we are driven to this high point as it makes for a fastastic variation during the day, starting with expansive views and later turning inland into a forested valley. And another key point - this way we avoid walking uphill. The 'Valley of the Mills' We start by following paths winding through well-tended vineyards and orchards, passing through several small villages where life still revolves around working the land through the seasons. As we are quite high up we have frequent photo stops so you can capture the rugged beauty of the coastline below us. We then enter the Valley of the Mills, a narrow valley that was historically a hive of industry, with paper mills and iron works. Today it is largely back to its natural state, but it is fascinating to see the remains of these historic buildings. Many of the mills were established in the 1700s, today we see large arches and The lush valley microclimate buildings emerging evocatively from the forest, along the route of the river. Our trail takes us along one side of the valley heading inland, which gives us a quite different landscape and flora from the first section of our walk. The head of this valley is a nature reserve, with a series of waterfalls and lush forest wedged between dramatic limestone cliffs. This nature reserve protects rare ferns, which can be seen growing in this shaded and fertile part of the valley. We stop for lunch at the cafe associated with a small farm. A refreshment stop They serve us a lunch featuring a number of products that they have grown right here in the valley. This is a fascinating place for lunch - the farm is located on a series of terraces built up on the valley side. They food produce here that forms the basis for our lunch includes the special Amalfi lemons called 'sfusato amalfitano', their honey, and the wild herbs that they collect, to name just a few. Most people never come across this eating place, as it is tucked away on a path inaccessible by car. Later we visit the cathedral, Sant’ Andrea. This is more than just a church. Rather it is a complex of different buildings from different era, and is the heart of Amalfi. The Amalfi cathedral crypt www.italywithpleasure.com
Itinerary - Amalfi Coast Walking Tour From the evocatively named ‘Cloister of Paradise’, with elegant marble colonnades, frescoed private chapels and ancient Roman sarcophagus. The Romanesque style Church of the Crucifix, this is a 10th century church. Then the crypt where the remains of Saint Andrew are held. And finally into the main cathedral, with its elaborate baroque decorations. For the rest of the afternoon and evening you a free to enjoy the charms of Amalfi independently, perhaps spend sme time on the beach, or look around the interesting lanes that weave under and around ancient buildings as if in a rabbit warren. The 'Cloisters of Paradise' WALKING DETAILS: SCALA TO AMALFI The walk is fully guided. Total Distance: 3.7 miles / 6 km Duration of walking sections: 2.5 hrs Terrain: Well formed track, some steps, some gravel surfaces. Meals included: Breakfast and Lunch Day 3 – Strolling the Lemon Terraces & Ravello After a short drive to the town of Maiori, we walk on of the prime walks of the Amalfi Coast, the ‘Sentiero dei Limoni! (the Cultivated terraces ‘Path of the Lemons’). This walk leads you through terraced lemon groves around a headland, with fantastic views over the coast. The walk today is not too long or demanding – think of it as a morning stroll. Walking from one town to the next you get a feel for how people live on the coast today, these towns have a history going back to ancient Roman times and have been continuously inhabited through to today. On reaching the town of Minori where we have a coffee stop in an excellent pasticceria, then continue on to the charming The town of Atrani town of Ravello. Ravello is a fascinating town, with quite a different feel to the other towns on the coast. This stems back to the 11th century when Ravello split from Amalfi, with many of the noble families settling in this hill town. We visit together the Villa Cimbrone, an elegant historic residence with formal gardens. From the terrace of Villa Cimbrone you have amazing views down to the sea. Later you have some free time to explore Ravello independently. Of particular note are the buildings and gardens of Villa Ruffolo, and the cathedral. Terrace of Villa Cimbrone www.italywithpleasure.com
Itinerary - Amalfi Coast Walking Tour Or simply wander through some of the lanes, and relax around the piazza area where there are numerous shops and cafes. Ravello is famous for vibrant hand-painted ceramics and for the excellent local wine, both of which can be found in the specialty shops here. There are also some more elegant boutiques and galleries, catering to the well-heeled travellers that frequent Ravello. WALKING DETAILS: THE SENTIERO DEI LIMONI The walk is fully guided. Total Distance: 1.5 miles / 2.5 km Villa Cimbrone, Ravello Duration of walking sections: 1 hr Terrain: Sealed path, some steps. Meals included: Breakfast Day 4 – Hiking the 'Path of the Gods' & Positano We drive up to a high point on the Amalfi Peninsula, and from here we start today’s hike which has the grand title 'The Path of the Gods' (Sentiero degli Dei’). On the 'Walk of the Gods' This is one of the more popular trails on the Amalfi Coast, and walking along this path high above the sea you’ll see why it has gained such renown. It commands fantastic views right out to the island of Capri. The trail takes you through a mixture of wooded areas as well as typical Mediterranean countryside, rocky with wild herbs, flowers and scattered olive trees. Goat herders are often seen on the grassy terraces tending their flocks, and peregrine falcons soar high above. Partway along the trail we stop in at an old farmhouse for a Looking along the Amalfi Peninsula lunch, much of which is produced by the proprietors of this property (they bring supplies to this remote location by donkey!). This is a special experience as it is not a restaurant open to the general public, but they are happy to provide sustenance to our group. As well as that, you won't find a more pleasant place to stop, it feels like you've been transported to a different epoch such is the isolation and tranquility. The walk is 2 ½ hours duration and finishes in the town of Nocelle. Lunch on the trail www.italywithpleasure.com
Itinerary - Amalfi Coast Walking Tour Following the walk we go to Positano. Famous for elegant fashion boutiques and seaside charm, this has been a holiday destination for centuries. The afternoon is clear for some free time in Positano, which has an enviable combination of a goodbeach with a broad seaside promenade, with cafes and chic boutiques jostling for position in the pastel coloured buildings. This is a good time for a swim. You can spend some of the afternoon exploring the narrow back streets lined with bougainvillea, or just find your nearest café, put your feet up Positano and sample the local specialty –limoncello! To return to Amalfi we go by boat, and cruising along the coast reveals a new perspective on the area, with some incredible houses tucked away and tiny hidden beaches. WALKING DETAILS: THE PATH OF THE GODS The walk is fully guided. Total Distance: 5.6 miles / 9 km Duration of walking sections: 2.5 hrs Terrain: Mainly well formed track, some natural rocky sections. Meals included: Breakfast and Lunch The coast around Positano Day 5 – Island time in Capri Today we travel to Capri, a favoured destination for the rich and famous in recent times, but also with an interesting history stretching back beyond ancient Roman times. On Capri we take the funicular railway up to the town centre, where top fashion boutiques jostle for space alongside locals selling fruit and vegetables. Starting from the centre of town we walk out to the Villa Jovis. Passing a series of luxury villas and gardens, you pass through The ancient Roman Villa Jovis the outskirts of town and reach the ancient Roman site. The Villa Jovis was the largest and most sumptuous of the island’s 12 Roman villas and Tiberius’ main Capri residence. A vast pleasure complex, now reduced to ruins, it famously pandered to the emperor’s debauched tastes, and included imperial quarters and extensive bathing areas set in dense gardens and woodland. The stairway behind the villa leads to the 330m-high Salto di Tiberio (Tiberius’ Leap), a sheer cliff from where, as the story goes, Tiberius had out-of-favour subjects hurled into the sea. Walking on Capri www.italywithpleasure.com
Itinerary - Amalfi Coast Walking Tour Later in the afternoon you’ll find Capri has plenty of scope for simply browsing the shops and enjoying the ambience. And stroll down to the Gardens of Augustus for some more great views. We return by ferry to Amalfi late afternoon. In the evening we have the final dinner, enjoying the best of Amalfi Coast cuisine and celebrating the week we’ve had in this special part of Italy. Capri's Faraglioni rocks WALKING DETAILS: CAPRI Villa Jovis Circuit The walk is fully guided. Total Distance: 3.4 miles / 5.5 km Duration of walking sections: 1.5 hrs Terrain: Well formed track Meals included: Breakfast and Dinner Capri Day 6 - All Roads Lead to Rome By now you know the local barista by name - and he knows which coffee you order - but we must say 'arrivederci' to the Amalfi Coast and return to Rome. En route we visit the ancient ruins of Pompeii. Here we have a guided visit, where we see both evidences of the lifestyle of the inhabitants of this Roman city, as well as the destruction caused by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD. Even for those who have visited Pompeii before, having a specialist archaeologist guide provides an in depth experience and is Pompeii very revealing. We enjoy a final lunch together in Pompeii, having our last chance to enjoy regional cuisine, before heading north to Rome. We reach Rome around 7pm. Meals included: Breakfast and Lunch Frescoes in Pompeii www.italywithpleasure.com
