C h a i r m a n ’s M e s s a g e Dear Residents In the course of my duty to our estate, I am proud to report that our recent projects in the estate have enhanced our reasons for choosing Boardwalk Meander as our home in the country threefold. Allow me to elaborate on this. Firstly, the security access management has been stepped up, with greater care being taken in the process of a paperless fingerprint-driven system. Thank you to Deon Strydom for your vision for security. Secondly, our most recent upgrades to our gardens and water features, and whilst the tennis court is still under the hand of construction, it is exciting to see the progress. The estate gardens are looking stunning. Thank you to Reg Botha on your consistent efforts. Thirdly, our spring event mustered a well-supported crowd of residents. The event was well planned and well executed and has become another good memory of the milestone of community development. It’s always so great to meet the people of Boardwalk Meander and share some free time enjoying what’s ours! Thank you to Nick Behr on his unique implementation of Community initiatives, which are now a way of life in our estate. “It’s always Let me also mention our two other portfolios happening in the back- ground, Finance and Legal. Nature A Brief History of Arbor Day Arbor Day originated in 1872 in the United States territory of Nebraska. Mr J Sterling Morton, a newcomer to the treeless plains of Nebraska, was a keen proponent of the beauty and benefit of trees. He persuaded the local agricultural board to set aside a day for planting trees and through his position as editor of Nebraska’s first newspaper, encouraged participation in the event by publishing articles on the value of trees for soil protection, fruit, shade and building. Mr Morton’s home, known as Arbor Lodge, was a testament “Each generation to his love for trees and so inspired the name of the holiday: takes the earth as Arbor Day. Within two decades Arbor Day was celebrated in every US State and territory, and eventually spread around trustees.” the world. The tradition continues annually in the second week - J. Sterling Morton of August, in global acknowledgment of Mr Morton’s slogan, “other holidays repose upon the past; Arbor Day proposes for (April 22, 1832 - April 27, 1902). the future”. In South Africa, Arbor Day was first celebrated in 1983. The event captured the imagination of people who recognized the need for raising awareness of the value of trees in our society. As sources of building material, food, medicine, and simple scenic beauty, trees play a vital role in the health and well-being of our communities. Collective enthusiasm for the importance of this issue in South Africa inspired the national government, in 1999, to extend the celebration of Arbor Day to National Arbor Week. From 1 to 7 September every year, schools, businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate in community “greening” events to improve the health and beauty of the local environment and propose a green future for South Africa.
