Register beginning August 30. Find your direction with The Library Compass is your guide to discovering events and programming for children, families, teens, and adults. Registration Most events with The Library require registration, which is noted in their descriptions. Visit dcls.org/events, or call 717-234-4961 and choose option 6 to register. Once you’re registered, you’ll receive a confirmation email, and if the event is online, you’ll be contacted by a library employee with more information and any links you may need to join. For most recurring children’s programs, register once and you’re registered for all events following. You’ll be contacted weekly with a link to the program. Even online programming is better together! Please plan to stay and interact with your child during the program. In-person events are all subject to change or cancellation in response to guidance from the CDC and the Office of Commonwealth Libraries. Covid-19 precautions will be taken at all in-person programming and are also subject to change in response to guidance from the CDC. Please be sure to include your phone number and/or email address during registration so that The Library can contact you if a program is canceled or changed. Children’s Book Week with Cozbi Cabrera! November 8 – November 14, 2021 Join us for the 15th annual Joan Y. Leopold Children’s Book Week Celebration Best for children ages 3-6, but families with children of all ages are welcome. Registration opens on October 1. All week long, find displays FR E E and a take and make activity EP! BOO for families in the libraries. KE KT O Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Honoree Cozbi Cabrera will join us to talk about her award-winning book Me and Mama. Each family will receive a copy of the book to keep and can get the book signed after the event. 1 hour. Registration is required and limited. In-person event registration will be limited, events will be socially distanced, and all current CDC guidelines will be followed. Live stream event registration is required, and books will be available for pickup at your chosen library after the event. About the Author: Cozbi A. Cabrera received a BFA from Parsons School of Design. She is the illustrator of several books, including the picture book Beauty, Her Basket, which Publisher’s Weekly called “a quiet treasure” in a starred review. In 2021 her book Me and Mama won a Caldecott Honor for illustration, a Coretta Scott King Honor recognizing an African American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children, and her illustrations in Exquisite: The Poetry and Life of Gwendolyn Brooks garnered a Robert F. Leopold Children’s Book Week Celebration This Children’s Book Week Celebration is made possible by the Joan Y. Leopold Endowment Fund. Joan Y. Leopold, a life long resident of Dauphin County, served as a board member of the Dauphin County Library System for more than 20 years. Toddler Storytime For ages 19 – 35 months Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. on Zoom Give your toddler a foundation for early learning and reading skills. Songs, rhymes, fingerplays, and stories will be presented via Zoom. Adults will learn tips and tricks to continue the learning at home. About 30 minutes. Preschool Storytime For ages 3 – 5 years Fridays at 10:00 a.m. on Zoom Songs, rhymes, and stories help your child develop a love of reading and build early learning skills that will help your child succeed. Now you can! We at The Library know you have stories and we want to share them, so we are inviting all teen writers and aspiring writers to workshop their pieces with us and include them in an anthology that we will publish and include in The Library’s collection. Either come with some of your writing to the workshop or be ready to be inspired by creative prompts. Learn about the publishing industry along the way. Reading Challenges on Beanstack 1000 Books Before Kindergarten For ages 0 to 5 The idea is simple: build a daily reading habit with your child, log your reading, and earn prizes! Register your infant, toddler, or preschooler any time before they start kindergarten and start reading. Log the books you read. What counts towards your reading? EVERYTHING! You can read the same book 1000 times or you can read 1000 different books. You can hear books at The Library’s storytimes and they count. An older sibling or grandparent can read, and it still counts! Read three books a day and you’ll be done in less than a year! Earn a prize book at 100 books, 500 books, and 1000 books, and sign our wall of readers at your library every time you hit a 100 book milestone. Register today on Beanstack at dcls.beanstack.org. Pick up a paper log at any library, or log your reading online with the Beanstack Tracker app. Winter Reading Challenge December 1, 2021 to February 28, 2022 FOR Cozy up on the couch and read along with The Library this winter. Earn points by logging ALL your reading, writing reviews, creating picture reviews, and doing activities. Points allow AGES! you to choose your own Winter Reading adventure. Preschoolers Adults Earn 100 points to complete the program! Earn 30 points to complete the program! For the 5 and under crowd, we are challenging our youngest Adults ages 18+, your goal is to earn 30 points. We recommend Library members to earn 100 points this winter. For Ages 18+ Starting this fall, tune in to our biweekly podcast to hear library staff discuss LGBTQ+ books written by members of the LGBTQ+ community.
