    Wisconsin Veterans
Home at King Ihope you are enjoying the beautiful weather here with summer in
Wisconsin. This year seems to be flying by quickly, so I want to update
you on a few items that will be happening soon at King.
        Commandant
Tammy Servatius Last September, WDVA announced that we will be transitioning to a
smoke-free campus at King, beginning June 30, 2025. It is my hope that
King’s members can be successful in moving toward a healthier, smoke-
       Ainsworth Hall
free lifestyle if we all – family, friends, staff, and fellow members – pitch in
      Executive Director
together to encourage and help each other.

As we move toward June 30, 2025, we have begun taking steps to ensure
MacArthur Hall that we are all prepared for this important milestone. One reason I mention
Executive Director this is because our state-of-the-art John R. Moses Hall is expected to open
Greg Reichenbach later this year. It is a smoke-free facility, and as such, only members who
have not smoked for at least six months will be admitted to this new
Olson Hall building. If you would like to move into this new facility, and are a smoker,
Executive Director I encourage you to take steps now to quit smoking; our smoking cessation
Rhonda Kozik program is available to help.

We are currently in the planning stages for the grand opening of the new
John R. Moses Hall. This state-of-the-art facility will house 192 members.
LIKE US The remaining members on campus will reside in either MacArthur Hall,
ON which will also be smoke-free, or Ainsworth Hall, which will accommodate
smokers until the 2025 all-campus deadline. If you are curious about the

Marine combat veteran) for 49 years. We have two daughters,

cross country skiing, working in the woods (winter), snowmobiling, home improvements (home
& elsewhere) besides volunteering at school and committees at church. I am the treasurer for ALA

pandemic I would help on shopping trips and assisting members to events on campus. I would
also visit members of our American Legion Auxiliary in other halls.

What brought me to volunteer at King was my husband, Keith. He belongs to the American Legion
Post 391, which hosted bingo. I filled in for him 1-2 times and thought when I retire it would be
fun to volunteer and give back to our veterans. My father was a World War II Army Air Corp veteran
assigned to Search and Rescue with sled dogs. (He and we used to race sled dogs). I also had many
uncles, a brother in-law and a niece and nephew that served. I am so very proud of all of them.

I can’t express the fulfillment one receives giving back to those who gave so much. I’m glad
volunteers are making their way back to campus. I miss “my guys” (and gals) when I am not able to
see them. The members are so we are appreciative when we are there.

Aircraft Carrier Anchors and Romans 8:38-39

R ecently I was reading some trivia describing the anchors used on many US Navy aircraft carriers.
Here are some of the things I learned: How many anchors are there for an aircraft carrier? 2. How
many pounds does each anchor weigh? Approximately 60,000 pounds. That equals 30 tons. To make
the numerical weight easier to visualize and grasp…How many full-grown elephants would that be
equal to? About 6 at 10,000 pounds per elephant. An average-size elephant weighs about 10,000
pounds. Imagine 6 elephants connected on a chain on both the bow and stern of the carrier. If you
love elephants like me, imagine them with scuba gear on.

What depth will the chain of links holding the anchor drop to on a carrier? About 1000 feet. That’s
almost 3 football fields. How much does each link on the chain weigh? About 365 pounds. Final
question: If you add up the weight of both anchors and all links on both chains how much weight
would that be? About 735,000 pounds. That equals 368 tons. Or using an image referred to earlier,
that is about 74 adult-size elephants…with scuba gear.

What is my main point in bringing up this trivia? A ship that uses that kind of anchor-weight is well-
secured! The incredible weight of those anchors will keep the carrier in a pier from drifting during
stormy weather even a hurricane. Even so, I am sure that a devastating storm or missile attack could
separate the ship from the anchors.

Is there an anchor that keeps us secured to God through this life and into eternity? An anchor that will
hold us to God through every challenge, crisis, personal failure, or sin? An anchor that is indestructible?
Yes! Romans 8:38-39 tells believers that Christ is our anchor that connects us to God and His love. And
no one or nothing can separate us from God’s love for us in Christ. No personal failure or sin! No
 challenge or crisis!

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor
the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to
separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39/NIV)

The Good News that you can anchor your life to and fully trust is this: God loves you and has secured
you to Himself, His family, and His kingdom through our Savior, Jesus the Christ! Jesus lived a perfect

Aircraft Carrier Anchors and Romans 8:38-39 continued from page 9

life in your place obeying all of God’s righteous laws. And Jesus died on the Cross to take away all your
sins which separated you from God. He reconciled and connected you to God by His perfect blood-
sacrifice. All your sins are forgiven…past, present, and future. Jesus rose in victory from the dead
assuring you that God accepted His sacrifice for your sins, that your relationship with God is eternally
secured, and that you too will rise again from the dead on the Last Day.

What amazingly wonderful news that is for us as believers in Jesus! There is no sin or storm that can
bash against our lives and separate us from God and His love. There is no assault from the Enemy that
can separate us from God and His love. We are permanently attached to God through our anchor,
  Jesus Christ!

As I have gotten to know many of you since I started working at King last October, I have learned
about the tremendous blessings you have received from God and your joys. And I have also learned
of various trials many have experienced or are experiencing: Struggles with physical pain, diseases,
and sicknesses including cv19. Struggles with depression, sadness, and loneliness. Struggles in
relationships with family and friends. Struggles with temptations and guilt over past sins. And the list
goes on. I’m humbled and honored that you entrust your personal stories and experiences to me in
confidence. And I can relate to what you share with me from my own trials and failures.

Life in this fallen world is often exceedingly difficult. Yet none of these things listed above or anything
else in all creation can separate us from God and His love for us through our Savior Christ…not even
death. We will get through every storm and struggle with Jesus’ help. And as we look back in our lives
we can see evidence of God’s hand delivering us from or through every past challenge or crisis. One
day Jesus will even deliver us through death to be with Him in glory. And on the Last Day we will be
raised up from the dead to live eternally with God and all our loved ones in Christ in the perfect, new
heaven and earth. Rejoice in these beautiful promises and truths!

In the first century, the anchor, not the Cross, was the most widely recognized Christian symbol
for followers of Christ. There was wide-spread and intense persecution of Christians in the Roman
Empire. Many Christ-followers were executed for their faith in Jesus. In the tombs and burial places of
many Christians during that period are pictures and images of anchors. Christians of that time found
powerful comfort in this Christian symbol of safety. It reminded them that Christ was their safe and
sure anchor, and nothing could separate them from God’s love for them in Christ not even persecution
or execution by the Roman state.

Fortunately, American Christians are not experiencing overt persecution like the first century Christians
in Rome. I’m hoping that will never happen. Nonetheless, we do get assailed by the Enemy of our souls,
the fallen world, and our sinful flesh. And we can at times question if God really loves us. At those
moments, we can remind ourselves and each other that Jesus, the Son of God, is our anchor! And He
has secured our relationship with God, our Father by His life, and death on Calvary, and resurrection.
And nothing can separate us from God and His love for us because of Jesus!

Next time you see an aircraft carrier think of how many elephants it takes to equal the weight of an
anchor on a carrier. No, just kidding. Who really cares about that trivia? Think of this amazing and
comforting truth: Christ is your anchor no matter what you face in life. That is not trivia or trivial. Christ
is and always will be our anchor, and nothing can separate us from God’s love for us in Christ Jesus our
  Lord!

     My Time

M arch 1937 was a very important date for me. Why that’s when I was born. While growing up I
became very shy. I would rather have my nose in a book then talk to people. Funny thing is I
also didn’t like school. I walked to school which was about two miles away from our house. In grade
school we were in a room with a pot belly stove in the middle of the class room. I only attended my
first year of high school. After that I went to worked baby-sitting for a lady for about six months.

In the early 1960s I worked in a store in Antigo. There, I met the man I would marry in the fall of that
same year. After we got married, we moved to a little town called Deerbrook, WI. I raised our family.
We had one daughter and three sons. My second son is married. I have two grandsons, two great
grandsons, and two great granddaughters. My youngest son is getting married soon and I’m sure
he will be adding to our family tree.

Around 1988, my husband and I went to work up north as caretakers for a 276 acres tree farm. I was
the cook and housekeeper. The owners were millionaires. His first wife died and later remarried a
former movie star. In 1996 the owner sold the place. We worked for the new owners for a year and
retired in 1999. But retirement was short lived because I went back to work cleaning cabins for a
resort for eight years and then retired.

My husband got very sick in 2014 and I was his caregiver until 2017. We decided to move to the
Wisconsin Veterans Home at King and in 2018 I became a widow. I go about these days talking
and making friends. I have met my favorite friends and enjoy spending time with them. God bless.

     Your favorite friend,
     Melda Ann

                                  A Farmer’s Grace Before Breakfast
Submitted by: WVH-King member, Father Jerome Taddy

A pastor attended a men’s breakfast in the middle of a rural farming
area of the country. The group had asked an older farmer, decked out
in bib overalls, to say grace for the morning breakfast:

“Lord, I hate buttermilk,” the farmer began. The visiting pastor
opned one eye to glance at the farmer and wonder where this was
                                  going.

The farmer loudly proclaimed, “Lord, I hate lard.” Now the pastor
Father Taddy would was growing concerned.
       like to make people
Without missing a beat, the farmer continued, “And Lord, you know
       smile by sharing some
I don’t much care for raw white flour.”
       of his favorite poems
and stories. The pastor once again opened an eye to glance around the room and
saw that he wasn’t the only one to feel uncomfortable.

Then the farmer added, “But Lord, when you mix them all together
and bake them, I do love warm fresh biscuits.

So Lord, when things come up that we don’t like, when life gets
                               Bobhard, when
