I attempt to answer emails within 24 hours during the work week. Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center is administered by Mukilteo School District and follows MSD School Board Policies and Procedures. COURSE INFORMATION 2020-2021 Given the rapidly changing recommendations and requirements related to the COVID-19 pandemic, all information is subject to change. Any changes to course plan or requirements will be communicated to students and parent/guardian as soon as possible. Course Description: “The course is designed to prepare students for employment with the entry-level skills of a certified nursing assistant in nursing homes, hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, home or community health agencies, or other healthcare facilities. The content includes, but is not limited to, basic essentials of healthcare, interpersonal skills, medical terminology, the structure and function of the human body, legal and ethical responsibilities, employability skills, and safety in the workplace. Students will learn emergency procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) – health saver level. Using the academic foundation of medical terminology, accurate mathematical operations and computations, and knowledge of the life sciences, students will demonstrate technical skill competency in real-life healthcare situations. The program criteria are dictated by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) for a standard CNA program, and the National Healthcare Foundation 1
Standards and Accountability Criteria.” (State Framework for Nursing Assistant Programs, Draft. June 1, 2020) The Nursing Assistant program is a one-year course for 11th or 12th grade students. The curriculum is in accordance with the National Nurse Aide Assessment program (NNAAP) for the WA State Certification Exam. The state exam for certification is at the end of 2nd Semester at Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center. Prerequisites: Health and Biology Session Times: Monday-Friday: AM Session 7:55 -10:25 AM; PM Session 11:10 AM to 1:40 PM Credits: High School Credits: 3 Elective credits Equivalency Credit: 1 Lab Science credit CTE Dual Credit: Everett Community College: (Must have a C or better average grade) 10 credits Nursing 100 Consortium of Colleges: 17 credits available (Must have a B or better average grade) Intro to Healthcare 116: 4 credits Medical Terminology 104: 3 credit Certified Nursing Assistant - Clinical Externship (AHE164): 1-2 credits NA Patient Care 162: 6 credits NA HIV 170: 1 credit NA PC Basics 129: 3 credits Clinical Internship: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 6:00 AM to 2:45 PM. REQUIRED MATERIALS (provided by student): Scrubs: Prints may be worn in classroom only. Solid colors with matching top and bottom for clinical days. Wristwatch with capabilities to show seconds. ID Badge (provided by Sno-Isle TECH - to be worn every day) Hair ties for long hair If student has any barriers to obtaining these items, including financial concerns, please discuss with course instructor or with School Director Wes Allen or Assistant Director Kim Brown. Assistance is available. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, student will: Be able to safely and correctly perform 22 required skills, pass written and skills- based state certification testing. Be able to safely and accurately perform other clinical skills (in addition to the state tested skills) relevant to patient care. Be able to describe the role and scope of practice for a Certified Nursing Assistant, as well as the other members of the healthcare team and explain how this informs their professional practice. Be able to demonstrate understanding of the major body systems, common diseases and disorders, and how the understanding of anatomy and physiology informs their care of patients. Will demonstrate a working knowledge of safety, infection control and emergency procedures by explaining how they would respond in a given clinical situation. Be able to understand and communicate in the clinical setting using appropriate medical terminology and abbreviations. Be able to identify clinical and ethical concerns in the patient care setting and discuss how to handle these situations professionally. Be able to demonstrate or discuss appropriate strategies and methods of caring for patients who are impaired or have special needs. Be able to explain the steps for applying for a job, how to interview and will have completed a work portfolio to include a cover letter and resume. Have successfully completed training in First Aid and CPR for Health Care Providers. COURSE EXPECTATIONS This course prepares students for a career as a healthcare professional. Students will be expected to behave in a professional manner consistent with industry standards. Students are expected to participate and engage with course and clinical at the level of responsible, adult professionals. 3
Healthcare professions require behaviors of integrity, professionalism, respect and compassion. These behaviors are expected when interacting with nursing facility residents, facility staff, as well as school staff and other students. Scrubs and professional appearance (see professional policies) expected for all in classroom days. No perfume or cologne. Avoid any heavily scented clothing detergent, soaps, lotions and beauty products. Online sessions require student dressed to school dress code, scrubs not required. APA Format, 7th Edition will be the standard format for all projects and papers. Cell phones to be kept in lockers during class time, turned off and put away for online sessions. Students will comply with the personnel policies of clinical facilities and the professional policies of the school regarding behavior, dress and electronic device use. Failure to do so may result in termination of the clinical experience and disqualification for CNA exam. As part of the learning experience, all students will be expected to take turns for practicing skills. Utmost respect for fellow students is expected. Confidentiality is to be maintained. Zero tolerance for bullying. To qualify to take the State CNA exam, students must maintain an overall course grade of 80% or better. Ultimately it is the decision of the instructor to approve participation in the clinical rotation. CERTIFICATE OPPORTUNITIES American Heart Association CPR for healthcare providers First Aid Certificate Washington State Certified Nursing Assistant PROFESSIONAL POLICIES Scrubs are to be worn every day in class and clinical. Scrubs should be clean, unwrinkled and in good repair. Scrubs should be laundered in warm or hot water and machine dried after every wearing to prevent any cross contamination. Clean and neat appearance. Long hair must be tied back and away from the face. Clinical sites are FRAGRANCE FREE. No perfume or cologne. Avoid any heavily scented clothing detergent, soaps, lotions and beauty products. Shoes with non-skid soles, closed toe and covered upper foot. Scrubs with patterns may be worn in class ONLY. Solid color scrubs (matching tops & bottoms) will be required for clinical days. Scrub pants should not drag touch the floor for purposes of safety & disease control. If scrub pants are too long, they will need to be hemmed. 4
Faculty and students must always wear their Sno-Isle TECH ID. Students must have a watch, a black writing pen, and their ID badge with them at all times while providing care. Fingernails: no artificial nails, no nail polish, natural nails no longer than ¼”. Minimal jewelry. Body piercing (other than ear piercing and/or 1 very small facial piercing) must be covered with tape. Tattoos – Facility has no visible tattoo policy. During clinical shifts, all tattoos must be covered with clothing or bandage. Attendance and punctuality (for class and clinical) are essential and will be part of the attendance and participation grade. No cell phones or food allowed in patient care areas. Cell phones may be used on designated breaks ONLY. ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING Assessment Criteria and Grading Policies (as percent of total grade): Attendance, participation (10 %) Reflective Journals, Professional Portfolio (10 %) Quizzes, Exams (30%) Projects and Presentations (20%) Skill competencies (30%) MSD Grading Scale A = 94 to 100 % B- = 80 to 83 % D+ = 67 to 69 % A- = 90 to 93 % C+ = 77 to 79% D = 60 to 66% B+ = 87 to 89% C = 74 to76% P = 55% B = 84 to 86 % C- = 70 to 73 % Late Work or Make-up Work: All assigned work must be completed and turned in on-time to receive full credit. Students with special circumstances requiring extra time must negotiate with the instructor on an extra time request form with new due date prior to the due date. Late work without prior arrangement will be deducted 10% per day late. When absent, students must take responsibility to contact instructor and actively seek out missed work. Grading communication: Students are encouraged to review their grades at least weekly to verify correctness of entries and be aware of their progression in the course. Any concerns should be addressed with instructor as soon as possible. To qualify to take the State CNA exam, students must maintain an overall course grade of 80% or better. 5
Lack of progression in skills or pattern of grades below 80% will be reviewed with the student. If there is no improvement, the student, parent, counselor, and Sno-Isle administrator will be contacted to develop a collaborative plan for student support and success. COURSE CONTENT Students will complete the following units and skills competency over the course of the school year. Clinical hours will be completed during 2nd Semester. Units (not necessarily taught in this order): 1 Basic Human Anatomy and Physiology 2 Communication: Interpersonal, Cultural & Digital 3 Information Technology Applications 4 Healthcare Systems (History, Healthcare Delivery System, Teaming) 5 Career Development and Employability (Portfolio-competencies) 6 Legal/Ethics (Rules, Regulations, Information Collection, OSHA) 7 Safety/Emergency Situations 8 Infection Control 9 Basic Technical Skills (BLS/CPR, Charting) 10 Specific Skills & Knowledge of Practice – Personal Care Skills 11 Mental Health & Social Service Needs 12 Specific Skills & Knowledge of Practice – Care of Cognitively Impaired 13 Specific Skills & Knowledge of Practice – Basic Restorative Services Skills: These are the minimum required skills for CNA testing, additional skills may be added per instructor judgement. Students will care for and see patients, male and female, in all stages of dress and undress. Students will complete their clinical hours during a two-week Friday, Saturday, and Sunday rotation sometime during the 3rd quarter. Students will sign up for their preferred internship weekends in January. Students will be responsible for their own transportation to Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center and then be transported in the school van to the clinical site. Students with an 80% or higher GPA at the end of quarter three with 40 completed hours of clinical experience will be eligible to sit for the Washington State Certification Exam. REQUIREMENTS FOR CLINICAL EXPERIENCE Must be completed and documentation submitted to instructor for items 1-7, PRIOR TO END OF 1st SEMESTER (1/29/2020). Late submissions will result in deductions in participation grade. If student has any barriers to completing these requirements, including financial concerns, please discuss with course instructor or with School Director Wes Allen or Assistant Director Kim Brown. Assistance is available. 1. Mandatory Tuberculosis (TB) Screening: required by the Federal government for all healthcare workers. Two options – 2 step skin test OR blood test. Where to get a TB Test? https://www.doh.wa.gov/YouandYourFamily/IllnessandDisease/Tuberculosis/wheredoig etatbtest) TB Skin test is a 2-step procedure: can be done at primary care provide or a community health clinic, may be covered by health insurance. The TB or PPD “two step test” requires 4 visits: Step 1: A small injection is placed on the inner aspect of the forearm Step 2: It is “read” (looking for a bump) 2 – 3 days later Step 3: 1-3 weeks later a small injection is placed on the inner aspect of the forearm Step 4: It is “read” (looking for a bump) 2 – 3 days later TB Quantiferon Gold blood test – one time only blood draw, may be covered by insurance. Available at Any Lab Test Now for $199 (https://www.anylabtestnow.com/everett- 98208/tests/quantiferon-tb-gold-plus/). No provider order needed. 2. Vaccination record: Students will provide a copy of their vaccination record to include: MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B and seasonal influenza. Flu Vaccine: Students are strongly encouraged to get this vaccine; it is covered by medical insurance. Given the current pandemic, it is highly likely that clinical facilities will REQUIRE a flu shot, unless the student has a medical or religious exemption. If 8
there is a flu outbreak in the community or at the clinical facility, students that have not been vaccinated will not be able to complete their required 40 hours of internship (clinical rotation) and will not be able to take the state CNA exam. 4. Mandatory 5 panel urine drug screening: This is a 5-panel urine drug screen that can be done at some provider office laboratories, community health clinic or community lab. This test is for the presence of drugs in the urine. Most clinical facilities have a Drug Free policy for all clinical workers and employees. Criminal Background Check: This short online questionnaire is a Federal requirement for healthcare workers. The form will be completed in class. 6. CPR: This is a one day, in person 3 ½ - 4-hour Healthcare Provider course that requires passing a written test and skill demonstration. It must be BLS for Healthcare Providers through American Heart Association. The cost is usually around $50 - $75 and the card is good for 2 years. Class may be available at Sno-Isle, check with course instructor. 7. Social Security Number: Students must have a valid social security number to be eligible to sit for the state certification exam. Please discuss with instructor if you have any concerns. 8. Licensing Fees. Washington State Certification Exam: $124 (written and skills test) License Fee: Initial Application $65, annual renewal thereafter $70 9. Transportation is required on the 5 clinical days due to the clinical hours of 6 am to 2:45 pm. There is limited parking at the Skilled Nursing facility and all students will meet at the school and be driven in the clinical van. Note 4 of the 5 days will be on Saturdays and Sundays. 9
