NURS 6900 Transition to Nursing Practice 1 NURS 6900 Transition to Nursing Practice Spring 2023 NURS 6900 Face-to-Face, 15 weeks 1 credit hour Coordinator: Susan D. Kehl, PhD, RN, CNE Dean, Professor of Nursing Office: Swaid 106 Cell Phone: 501-207-1571 Office Phone: 501 279-4476 Email: skehl@harding.edu (preferred method of contact is email) Office hours: 8 – 5pm, M - F Course Description A Captone course designed to explore preparation for the national licensing exam and professional practice. A grade of “C+” or higher is required. Course Purpose, Audience and Method of Delivery Transition to Nursing Practice is offered to pre-licensure students who have been admitted to the Master’s Entry into Professional Nursing (MEPN) program. This course provides preparation and content review needed for successful completion of the national licensing exam. Residency programs and new graduate orientation programs are explored to allow MEPN graduates to make informed choices for the successful transition to practice. This course will be offered in a hybrid format. There will planned synchronous meetings and online assignments. Professional Behavior Expectations Registered nurses are prepared to function within an interdisciplinary team to lead and serve diverse patients (individuals, families, groups, communities, populations) across the life span in a variety of settings along the continuum of care. Since nurses assume the responsibility of the care of others, professional attitudes, behaviors, judgments and skills must be applied in all communication and interactions to provide safe and quality practice. The faculty at the Carr College of Nursing (HCCN) believes that the classroom (online and face-to-face), simulation labs, and clinical experiences all provide settings for professional learning. Students are asked to engage actively in all settings as preparation for professional expectations encountered in their careers. Active engagement assumes attention to the topics, activities, speakers, faculty, peers, and patients involved in any given setting. Distractions should be for emergencies only and faculty notified if potential phone interruption or other issues are anticipated. Teaching Philosophy and Christian Perspective Faculty are responsible to facilitate the learning of students in preparation for professional careers in nursing. The faculty are responsible for modeling Christian character, authenticity, Harding University Carr College of Nursing 2021-2022
NURS 6900 Transition to Nursing Practice 2 service, and leadership in nursing education and practice and want to engage students by discussion in the faculty successes and failure of this responsibility. The faculty at HCCN believe that nursing curriculum should reflect the current practice environment in compliance with evidence-based professional standards and rules of regulatory organizations. The curriculum integrates the mission of the university. Concepts will reflect the knowledge, judgment, behaviors, skills, attitudes, and values required of the professional nurse. The faculty believe that active, participatory student-centered learning is required in master’s education to develop the professional competencies required of the graduate. Faith and learning resources act as a background for this course. The faculty invite the students to bring further resources in the semester discussion of faith in nursing practice. Assessment Harding University, since its charter in 1924, has been strongly committed to providing the best resources and environment for the teaching-learning process. The board, administration, faculty, and staff are wholeheartedly committed to full compliance with all Criteria of Accreditation of the Higher Learning Commission as well as standards of many discipline-specific specialty accrediting agencies. The university values continuous, rigorous assessment at every level for its potential to improve student learning and achievement and for its centrality in fulfilling the stated mission of Harding. Thus, a comprehensive assessment program has been developed that includes both the academic units and the administrative and educational support units. Course- specific student learning outcomes contribute to student achievement of program-specific learning outcomes that support student achievement of holistic university learning outcomes. All academic units design annual assessment plans centered on measuring student achievement of program learning outcomes used to sequentially improve teaching and learning processes. Additionally, a holistic assessment of student achievement of university learning outcomes is coordinated by the university Director of Assessment used to spur continuous improvement of teaching and learning. Academic Integrity Policy Honesty and integrity are characteristics that should describe each one of us as servants of Jesus Christ. As your instructor, I pledge that I will strive for honesty and integrity in how I handle the content of this course and in how I interact with each of you. I ask that you join me in pledging to do the same. Academic dishonesty will result in penalties up to and including dismissal from the class with a failing grade and will be reported to the Director of Academic Affairs. All instances of dishonesty will be handled according to the procedures delineated in the Harding University catalog. The full policy is available in the HCCN MEPN handbook. The first instance of cheating will result in a 0 for the assignment and an Academic Misconduct filing. The second instance will be a course failure. Online Etiquette Harding University Carr College of Nursing 2021-2022
NURS 6900 Transition to Nursing Practice 3 Online etiquette expectations are clearly described in the University’s handbook for graduate and professional programs that can be accessed at: http://www.harding.edu/assets/gradprogram/pdf/gradhandbook.pdf Please remember with online messages, people cannot see your face, they cannot hear the tone or inflection of your voice, and they cannot observe your body language to determine your intention. Therefore, when responding to another student's post or message, or even in creating your own, it is very important to write your thoughts out and take a few minutes away from them. Then reread what you wrote and make sure it answers the question(s) and is worded in a way that is not likely to offend others. It is okay to disagree, but do so in a manner that is constructive, rather than destructive, encouraging rather than denigrating. It is very easy to say the right words, but for them to be "heard" incorrectly. Take the time to review what you type. This is one of the benefits of online education: you have the ability to wait and rethink what you will say before you say it. USING ALL CAPITAL LETTERS IS THE SAME AS SHOUTING!!!!! Use capitals only to emphasize a point; do not type full posts in capital letters. Respect others’ opinions as you would have yours respected. This is a Christian school; please respect the religious beliefs of those around you. Attendance Policy in Nursing Courses Professionalism in nursing practice requires accountability and responsibility in course and clinical attendance. Regular class and clinical attendance is expected of all students for the entire class period.
