Topics include: a reassessment the choice of entity, recent regulations and guidance related to pass-through entities, planning for expiring tax provisions, pending changes and tax reform involving businesses, and more. Field of study: Taxes Income Tax and Lifetime Planning for Families- Part 1 and 2 Objective: To discuss a variety of unique tax and financial planning issues related to families and their members; including recent tax changes under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, CARES Acts, American Rescue Plan Act, and Infrastructure Legislation that affect such planning. This course reviews current legislative tax changes that impact tax planning issues confronted in family circumstances; such as planning for couples contemplating divorce, nontraditional families and couples, parents of children caring for those with special needs and the expanded definition of disabilities, as well as unique financial and tax planning issues that pertain to these special circumstances. In addition to reviewing the general framework in individual tax planning for our families, the course will focus on the financial and tax planning issues involving the role of government benefits (Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability Income, Medicare, and Medicaid), and both the tax and non-tax issues with regard to ABLE accounts and special needs trusts (both first party and third party). SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Larry Johnson, CPA, MST Larry Johnson is a Certified Public Accountant with more than 30 years experience with Sikich, a Top 40 CPA firm. He holds a B.S from Illinois State University and a Masters in Taxation from Fontbonne College in St. Louis. Mr. Johnson has served a variety of firm tax department leadership roles, including National Director of the Tax Exempt Division. Mr. Johnson has worked heavily with business clients. He has significant experience in planning related to complicated business transactions, including tax exempt organizations. Larry worked in tax representation before the IRS, including working on teams resulting in victories in United States Tax Court. Mr. Johnson was a founding member of the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln. He was a member of the National Committee of Planned Giving, serving on the National Leave A Legacy Board of Directors. He has provided governance and leadership training to nonprofit leaders. He has worked extensively in philanthropic planning with high-wealth families, employing a non-traditional values-based approach. For the past 17 years, he has been a national lecturer on taxation to accountants and attorneys. Thomas M. Brinker, Jr., CPA, PFS, ChFC, CFE, AEP Thomas M. Brinker, Jr. is Professor of Accounting at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania. He also serves as Executive Director for the MBA program and is Director of the American College 's Center for Special Needs Planning in King of Prussia, PA. He graduated cum laude from Saint Joseph’s University in Accountancy, and holds masters degrees in Taxation and Accounting from Widener University. In addition to earning his J.D., Professor Brinker earned an LL.M. in International Taxation from Regent University School of Law, where he received the distinction of “Outstanding Graduate” in his class. He presents nationally and internationally on various tax topics, and has published dozens of articles in numerous journals, including The Journal of Accountancy, The Journal of International Taxation, The Tax Adviser, The CPA Journal, The Journal of Practical Estate Planning, and The Journal of Financial Services Professionals. Professor Brinker has received awards for teaching excellence, including the Professor of the Year Award, the PICPA Educator of the Year Award and the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching, and lectures primarily in the financial accounting and individual tax areas. The self-study portion of the courses must be completed within one year of the conference dates.
