Program level: Update Prerequisites: General understanding of taxation, accounting and auditing Advance preparation: None TOPIC DESCRIPTIONS: Tax and Financial and Lifetime Planning for Families- Part 1 and 2 Objective: To discuss a variety of unique tax and financial planning issues related to families and their members and include recent tax changes under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that affect such planning. This course reviews the tax planning issues (including up-to-date tax changes) confronted in family circumstances; such as planning for couples contemplating divorce, nontraditional families and couples, parents of children with special needs, and unique financial and tax planning issues that pertain to these special circumstances. The course also addresses the various statutory and court-determined requirements that must be met for what constitutes a "dependent," a medical expense deduction, impairment-related work expenses, and the child and dependent care credit. In addition, other credits are reviewed, including the adoption credit, and the earned income tax credit. Furthermore, the sessions will focus on some financing nuances associated with the medical expense deduction (i.e. retirement planning distributions and home equity loans), the tax benefit rule, and the interaction of the medical expense and home equity deductions, as well as other financing techniques, with the Alternative Minimum Tax. As the definition of "family" expands, CPAs and other financial advisers need to understand the income tax and financial planning opportunities available in assisting families as they plan for their unique situation. In addition to reviewing the general framework in individual tax planning for our families, the course will focus on the financial and tax planning issues involving housing options for adults with disabilities, the role of government benefits (Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability Income, Medicare, and Medicaid), and both the tax and non-tax issues with regard to special needs trusts. The Unearned Income Medicare Contributions Tax will also be reviewed and its impact on the administration of special needs trusts. Our session will conclude with a comprehensive case study containing many of the tax and financial planning issues addressed in both seminars and how we as planners need to identify, address, and resolve the issues.
