National Respite for Carers Program (NRCP) Free Information Sessions, Events and Activities for NRCP Carers From January 2019 to June 2019
Carer Support Services About Us: Community Based Support (CBS) operates the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre (CRCC) in Southern Tasmania. We can: Schedule respite for clients into residential care facilities. Offer a range of information services for carers and the people they care for. We understand everyone is different and work with you to achieve the right level of services customised to your individual needs. Who do we help? Everyone! Carers may be family, friends or neighbours etc who are in a regular caring role to someone whom has; a disability, mental illness, a medical condition and/ or is frail aged. The caring role may be full or part time. How can we help? We can provide short – term support such as Respite, education / training courses, arrange counselling services, emergency support, connection to and information about other services in your local area, health promotion activities and activities to connect you to other carers. Strides – Weekly Walking CBS Carer Support Services are facilitating Walking Groups for Carers and your furry companions if you wish to bring them along. This is a free and easy way to get active, go outdoors and feel happy and healthy whilst catching up with other Carers. Everyone with capacity is welcome to take part in the walking groups. So, come along to CBS’s newly founded walking groups for an opportunity to make some new friends give your health a boost! CBS will be facilitating the first four (4) sessions. It is our hope the group will connect and continue to facilitate the walking group themselves in the future. Light refreshments provided at each session. Dementia Information Sessions With Dr Jane Tolman CBS continues to partner with Dr Jane Tolman (Dementia Expert), to bring you FREE monthly Dementia Awareness information sessions. At each session, Dr Tolman will discuss the following: What is Dementia? Why is it so prevalent in the 21st century? How do people get a diagnosis? What are the 3 stages of Dementia? How we can make a difference in the life of a person with Dementia? How can we get the support we need as carers of a person with Dementia? Light refreshments provided at each session. Book Club – Carer Driven Meetings Are you a Book Worm and love to discuss the books you are reading? Carers are invited to monthly afternoons of discussion and companionship about all things ‘Books’. Community Based Support will facilitate these sessions initially and once established will continue as a peer driven group. Light refreshments provided. Spaces are limited. Carer Connect – Monthly Catchup In 2019, the first Monday of every month is your chance to come along and join other carers for a chat, a laugh, a chance to listen to other peoples stories and receive up to date information from CBS staff about supporting you in your caring role. Past feedback indicates carers can feel isolated and unheard. These catchups intend to address this. CBS will facilitate these sessions initially and once established, the group will continue as a peer driven group. Come along to a few or all sessions as able. Light refreshments will be provided. Residential Aged Care Fees Information Session CBS have arranged for a specialist Aged Care Financial Planner from Strategic Financial Planning to conduct a free information session. The session will explain how residential care fees are calculated and paid and provide further information. David Donato from Strategic Financial Planning makes this complicated and confusing process easy to understand, and dispels many of the myths surrounding entry into a care facility. Massage Weeks—1, 2 & 3 Focus on Wellbeing How often do you make time for yourself to do something for your body and soul? When did you last do something to improve your own health and wellbeing? Caring for ones self is central to caring for someone else and we understand caring roles occupy much time. So, making time for you is important too! Shaun King (Masseuse, Massage & Remedial Therapy) is a qualified masseuse whom provides a range of massaging services in his Practice including relaxation, deep tissue, remedial & sports massages. Spaces are limited during each of the 3 Massage Weeks. Week 1: From 14th January 2019 to 18th January 2019; Week 2: From 4th March 2019 to 8th March 2019; and Week 3: From 13th May 2019 to 17th May 2019. Topics include: The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Home Care Packages, Carer Support services, Home Modifications, Home Maintenance and Technical Support Services. North West Carer Getaway The itinerary of this 3 x night Getaway aims to provide an opportunity for Carers to: Socialise with other carers. Focus on their own health and wellbeing. De-stress and unwind away from the usual daily routine. Develop skills to learn how to build resilience and mindfulness. Learn more about services and resources available, Undertake light physical activity (indoor/ outdoor) such as; swimming, yoga and walking. Spaces are limited. Speak up, Stay ChatTY The Community Presentation is an evidence-informed session focusing on increasing awareness about mental health and suicide, reducing stigma, and encouraging conversation and help-seeking. The presentation includes a lived experience video of Stay ChatTY founder Mitch McPherson sharing his personal story of bereavement by suicide. Light refreshments provided. Spaces are limited. Mental Health First Aid This is a two (2) day twelve (12) hour first aid course which provides information about common mental health conditions, the best treatments and strategies for managing crises and having caring conversations with people experiencing psychological distress. Crises such as suicidal thoughts, self- harming behaviours, panic attacks and psy- chotic episodes are explored. Spaces are limited. Lunch provided. Provide Emergency First Aid Course – St John Ambulance St John Ambulance deliver a first aid course to provide you with the skills to manage emergency first aid situations, including managing an unconscious casualty, performing CPR, controlling bleeding and managing other life threatening situations. Certificate: On successful completion of the course you will be issued a Certificate (Statement of attainment) in: HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support The Course Covers: How to manage a First Aid scenario, an unconscious breathing person, an unconscious non breathing person (which includes CPR and use of an AED), choking, drowning, shock, wounds and bleeding, burns, chest pain, anaphylaxis and asthma. Mental Health First Aid For The Suicidal Person This is a four (4) hour workshop providing information about suicide in Australia and a simple plan to respond to someone who is having suicidal thoughts. DESMOND Session - Diabetes Tasmania DESMOND is a one (1) day group program (Delivered by Diabetes Tasmania) which focuses on the practical skills around food choices, physical activity and the changes diabetes can bring. Whether you are newly diagnosed or have years of experience, DESMOND will help you find out more about how to live well with type 2 diabetes. Recommended for people with Type 2 Diabetes. Stroke Foundation - Volunteer Strokesafe Speaker Community Based support are pleased to offer a volunteer Strokesafe Speaker to deliver a presentation to our Carers with the aim of increasing health literacy, enabling and enlightening Carers. Many of the volunteer Strokesafe speakers have either had a stroke themselves or are close to someone who has. While the speaker will present common information about stroke and its prevention, they will also draw on their own personal experiences so every talk is different. As stroke is so widespread in Australia, these stories may impact members of your group in different ways which is important to be mindful of. Spaces are limited. Light refreshments provided. Art Workshops with Wendy Nash CBS are holding Art Workshops for Carers with the talented Wendy Nash! Registered Carers will attend all six (6) x group sessions (on Thursday’s). The aim of the workshops is to promote relaxation, relieve stress, socialisation and develop new skills in a peer supported environment. Creative Writing - Adult Education This is an opportunity for you to nurture your creativity and explore where your writing can take you! Offered to Carers is an exciting series of 6 x 2 hourly group workshops focussed on playing with words and forms such as poetry, short stories, memoirs, myths and journaling. The course covers; where ideas come from, how to develop them, as well as overcoming blocks and obstacles. This is achieved through a series of writing exercises which can be useful when writing in any style.
