NOVA SBE | NOVA Sustainable Way of Life Our Mission & Purpose Welcome to Carcavelos! Join us on this journey to reach for a more sustainable and clear horizon. The purpose of this guide is to lay the foundations for a sustainable way of living at the new Carcavelos Campus – it is meant to be a powerful tool to raise awareness amongst the Nova SBE community. Our mission is to map the initiatives and processes taking place on campus while providing a useful framework for an environmentally conscious behavior. We regard this project as a constant work-in-progress that requires the collaboration of all stakeholders in an effort to collectively ensure a mindful transition towards a more responsible and wholesome institution – and yes, we are counting on you too! 4
Nova SBE Green Guide | Winter 2019 Goals & Milestones Being fully aware that transitioning to a sustainable business school requires not only individual efforts to change daily habits and decisions but also an institutional engagement, Nova SBE devoted itself to address this issue and progressively achieve its pioneering environmental goals and milestones. By keeping our campus clean, we will generate savings which will be converted into scholarships – more info on this to be communicated soon. These are not just numbers, these are pledges to focus on what must be done by the entire community. Nova SBE | Nova Sustainable Way of Life Elementary, My Dear Watson! We’ve come a long way, but there’s still much to be done. Small changes of habit make a tremendous difference in inverting the negative trends that impact the environmental situation of our planet. Below you will find a summary of the fundamental information that this guide provides. Nova SBE Green Guide | Winter 2019 Food Food is a crucial issue and consensus seems to be hard to reach, but eating consciously is one of the easiest ways to lower your carbon footprint, and there are many ways of doing so! Choose, carefully, the amount Eat less meat! of food you want to eat! Reducing the amount of meat you eat benefits Though it is quite tempting to overindulge, by your budget, your health, and, you guessed it, shrinking your serving size to your actual needs the environment. The next step is to implement separate bins for organic waste. The cooking oils that the restaurants on campus use will also be collected and recycled. 10

Purchase Fair Trade goods and seek to understand how people are affected by the products and services you consume. If you are interested in fashion industry responsibility, then follow the Fashion Revolution movement #whomademyclothes. Quick tips: • Remember to always carry a reusable bag, like a tote bag for any unexpected last minute shopping; • Set an alarm on your mobile phone for around the time you leave home to remind yourself to pack your reusable bag, bottle, and snacks; • Try to buy bulk-in instead of packaged goods; • Prefer big packages instead of small. It is important to note that everyone is responsible for the environment; everyone’s actions have repercussions that will inevitably generate externalities for other members of society.
