NOV 15 17 brussels 4th international conference on nighttime economy, culture, urban development and health issues www.nights-conference.org
Welcome to the NIGHTS2018 Dear nightlife activists, policy makers, night venues’ managers, health professionals, urban planning specialists, festival organizers, night-ambassadors, academics, city elected officials, promoters, etc. After Padua and Berlin, this conference edition will invite you to think beyond the paradoxes and to keep up to date on the latest endeav- ours to promote an attractive nightlife and festival culture, for all. As the NIGHTS conferences wants to be part of the recognition of the important role music, dancing and going out has in every city and citizens’ life, we will continue to exchange on the four the- matic pillars; night-time economy, nightlife culture, urban develop- ment, safety and health issues. A special focus will be dedicated to urban-coexistence, nightlife-masterplans, night ambassador, drug policy, festival culture, leisure tourism and nightlife-bars. We hope you have a blast during NIGHTS. That you will get new ideas, the possibility to share experiences, to meet international ex- perts, with the possibility to enhance your networks and that you will not forget to plunge in the vibrant Brussels nightlife! Nightlife Culture Nightlife culture encourages cultural participation of the general popu- lation, whether in the form of active cultural contributions or simply as a passive observer enjoying the night. Despite often being described as “apolitical”, experience shows that the integration and exchange of music and dance can play an important role in spreading political issues. Nighttime Economy The nighttime economy has developed into an important economic factor. Its potential lays not only in economics – for example in the number of jobs created – it also sets trends. The benefits aren’t limited to trades such as gastronomy, music or other creative industries; diverse industrial areas have discovered and made use of the creative potential connected to nightlife. Urban Development One of the greatest challenges is currently urban planning in regard to nocturnal activities. The situation is further intensified through the constant transformation of city centres in residential areas and the de- crease of free spaces over the past decades. The question arises which innovative urban planning strategies are need in order to make sure that an attractive nightlife culture will also have place in the future cities. Health & Safety Celebrating is synonymous with pleasure and vitality, however excesses have always belonged to this way of life. Individual risk behaviour affects not only one’s own personal safety, but can also affect one’s behaviour, therefore potentially endangering the safety of others. TOPICS 05
