Quarter N O T E FALL 2021 FEATURED STORIES E D SI Letter from the Executive Director IN YOSA Fall Concert Recap E R O M
From the Executive Director There is not a sound more near and dear to our hearts than the sound of our young people making music together. Throughout my career in leading musical institutions, the one common thread is that music binds us together as a community. As a society, we may struggle to agree, but one thing I believe this audience can all agree on is the absolute joy of hearing our young people making music together again. I am HONORED to be starting this journey with YOSA. I am energized and encouraged by the high level of artistry, the intensity around the experience, and the tremendous support shown to YOSA by YOSA Executive Director, Jerrod Price our community. My family and I feel so warmly welcomed. Some might say we’ve received a “Texas- sized” welcome! After months of observation, I can tell you that YOSA is an extraordinary organization. The board and staff are remarkably dedicated and refine every detail to create an inspiring and inclusive experience. The faculty are extraordinary, led by our dynamic Music Director, Troy Peters. Troy’s artistic leadership is as impressive as his approachability, warmth, and kindness. Our young musicians are dedicated, passionate, thoughtful, and supported by wonderful families who help realize their musical ambitions. This will be on full display at our next YOSA Zachry Series concert on January 23 that will feature Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and bassist Xavier Foley. Pictures is a piece of extraordinary importance and musical history. It begins with a steady Promenade (walking section) in which the composer, Mussorgsky, depicts himself roving through an art exhibition - sometimes leisurely, sometimes briskly -in order to come close to a picture that had attracted his attention. Each movement depicts the character of the artwork in which he is observing. It’s a riveting piece for every listener. The real magic of this particular performance will be the combination of this remarkable masterwork, alongside brand new artwork by San Antonio area high school students. Combine this with a showcase of acclaimed bassist Xavier Foley and you have a recipe for an absolutely magical evening. Musical communities are resilient. Very often, it is in music making communities where the small become big. Where many young people “find their crowd.” Where they learn confidence, discipline, and collaboration. Healthy musical communities are encouraging, uplifting, supportive, and kind. It is not easy to achieve and takes intentionality and effort. BUT. It is the music that binds us together. YOSA is such a community and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication from all constituents: musicians, parents, board, donors, staff, and faculty, all moving energetically and emphatically towards the aspirational goal of artistic and personal growth. Life is a journey. Let’s enjoy the ride! I’ll look forward to seeing you in the hall on January 23. Jerrod Price YOSA Executive Director
Musican Spotlight: Ricardo Lazaro Meet Ricardo! Ricardo is a freshman at Town East Christian School as well as a trumpet player in the YOSA Wind Ensemble. This is his third year participating in YOSA and he has enjoyed being a part of the program. “The whole YOSA experience has broadened my musical horizons and, one day, I hope to be as good a musician as many of the other trumpet players who I have met through YOSA. Until YOSA, I had never performed in a place like the Tobin Center. Every concert that I have been a part of has been a great experience.” Ricardo is also an Eagle Scout, holds a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, and is a member of the East Christian School basketball team. Ricardo has consistently ranked at the top of his class and has won numerous academic awards and recognition over the years. Ricardo dedicates much of his time to serving as an Eagle Scout. This past summer, he completed a 12-day trek at Philmont Scout Reservation in Cimarron New Mexico. Ricardo is presently working on earning all 137 merit badges offered through the Scouting Program, an accomplishment that has only been attained by about 450 Scouts (out of approximately 105 million) in the entire history of the Scouting program. Ricardo shared with us why he set out to become an Eagle Scout. “Becoming an Eagle Scout was a goal I set for myself when I was just a Tiger Cub. My Dad was also an Eagle Scout and, one day, he took me to visit the Scout Headquarters for the Alamo Area Council. My Dad took me to a patio at the headquarters called the Plaza of Eagles to show me his name engraved on that wall. That same day, I told my Dad that, one day, my name would also be on that wall.” Last year, as an eighth grader, Ricardo competed in the Texas Christian Athletic League (TCAL) academic and music competitions for high school students. Ricardo placed second in the solo instrument competition, earned second place in the spelling bee, and placed first in the state of Texas for the Social Studies exam. Last year, Ricardo received special permission as a middle-schooler to compete in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) High School Solo & Ensemble competition. Ricardo performed “Concert Etude” by Alexander Goedicke and received a “Superior” rating--the highest rating attainable. We asked Ricardo to share his thoughts on being involved in so many activities in academics and beyond. “I think it is important when you are young to participate in as many different experiences as you can. This helps you to grow as a person and to learn much about your strengths and weaknesses. I have come to realize that I cannot be good at everything. But, at the same time, I think being involved in multiple after-school activities helps you to organize your time better. It also forces you to work efficiently and with focus and discipline. I think this will help me in the future no matter what I end up doing professionally.”
Fall Concert Recap Ten ensembles, four concerts, and over a thousand audience members added up to a season opening filled with excitement and long-awaited music. Set against the backdrop of the Tobin Center stage, YOSA Zachry Series: Music in Motion opened the season and showcased the musical excellence of the YOSA Philharmonic. For the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the group was a combined 100 musicians strong, filling the stage and the concert hall with the robust orchestral sounds of a lively program. The performance featured dance music from across the world. The evening kicked off with an energetic performance of Márquez’s Conga del Fuego Nuevo. The program continued with Smetana’s Three Dances from The Bartered Bride, Still’s “Afro-American” Symphony, and the Bacchanal from Samson and Delilah by Saint-Saëns. Each piece ignited the stage with joyful melodies and dance-like rhythms. The enthusiasm from each musician was audible and inspiring to witness. Halfway through the program, YOSA commemorated the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks with James Grant’s Tribute. The stirring performance of the piece dedicated “to those who work for peace” was highly moving. At the close of the concert, audience members and musicians filled the lobby as a new wave of sounds enveloped the Tobin Center. Joyful greetings between families meeting with their musicians echoed throughout the halls. In a sea of audience members and musicians, congratulatory hugs were shared and photos were taken to document an evening of music and inspiration. Two weeks later, nine YOSA ensembles gathered at the Alamo Heights High School auditorium for YOSA City Series: Autumn Festival. The day was overflowing with music as hundreds of YOSA musicians performed across three back-to-back concerts. YOSA Capriccio Strings, YOSA Flute Choir, and YOSA Repertory Strings kicked off the day of music at the 2:00 p.m. concert with a variety of pieces. The 5:00 p.m. concert featured all string orchestras. Audience members were able to see the full span of YOSA from the beginning musicians in YOSA Prelude Strings to the more advanced musicians in YOSA Sinfonietta Strings and YOSA Concertino Strings. To close the event, the 8:00 p.m. concert highlighted the final groups of the day. YOSA Percussion Ensemble gave an exciting performance, followed by YOSA Symphony and YOSA Wind Ensemble. YOSA Concerto Competition On November 13, YOSA musicians competed in the 2021/22 YOSA Concert Competition at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church. After a day filled with amazing performances from 11 YOSA musicians, a winner was selected by a panel of judges. Congratulations to YOSA Philharmonic violinist Ellie Kennedy! Ellie will appear as soloist at the YOSA Philharmonic’s May 8, 2022 Zachry Series concert at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.
