Everytown defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people,
not including the shooter, are killed with a firearm.

To identify the 173 mass shootings included in this analysis, Everytown compiled data
from media reports, police and court records, and publicly available databases for every
identified mass shooting between 2009 and 2017.17 Everytown’s researchers requested
