Northeastern School District March 18, 2022 Our K-6 buildings celebrated their monthly Mental Health Spirit day on Wednesday, March 16th! This month's theme was "I Believe In Me" where students and staff wore positive messages on their shirts to encourage one another. Check out some of the encouraging messages below and the activities students did to practice their positive self-talk!
Mrs. Johnson's first- grade students at Orendorf designed and built their own leprechaun traps. There was a lot of problem- solving and rethinking to make sure they would work on St. Patrick's Day! Congratulations Karron! We are Bobcat Proud of you!
National School Breakfast Week was March 7-11, 2022. The theme for celebrating National School Breakfast Week was "Take Off with School Breakfast." We had one random winner per day selected in each of our K-6 buildings. The prize was a mixing bowl, pancake mix, and a whisk to create their own superhero breakfast! Mrs. Bradford's 4th grade class is the first class at SFI to have every student reach their AR reading goal. They have worked so hard and are proud of their accomplishments! Congratulations Bobcats!!
Third grade students at Mount Wolf Elementary participated in a live steam event presented by Milk Means More titled, “Breakfast and a Book.” The event was live from a dairy farm and included the author Carol McCloud reading her book, Have you filled a Bucket Today? Owen Tucker (NEMS) and the York Devils are the 14U-B National USA Hockey AAHA District Champions!
What Can Indi Do? Anything you tell it to do! Students in Mrs. Wolff's second grade class at Conewago learned just how to get Indi to do whatever they commanded! Students explored coding Indi by experimenting with the coding cards and getting Indi to follow along on the paths they created! Everyone's favorite was watching Indi celebrate when it got to the purple goal! A huge thanks to Mrs. Shannon Oliver, our tech coach, for sharing her Indi with us!
Stephen Barlett placed 3rd in the PIAA Boys 3A State Diving Championship! Congratulations Stephen! Miss Wendy brought cups of edamame, or boiled soybeans, to share with second graders to give them a try. Lots of kids wished they could have more. A big thanks to the MWE PTO. Their support helps to provide the funds for this fun program.
Thank you Northeastern Foundation for supporting our coding grant at Conewago. We are ready to learn to code! The excitement over coding is contagious at Conewago! Coding suffixes while getting the leprechaun to his pot of gold was a great task for all!
During the first two weeks of March, the children in the four elementary schools reviewed a no Place for Hate booklet. This booklet contained reminders of ways each person can help to make school a place where everyone can feel safe and accepted. The classes discussed the importance of each one doing their best to treat everyone fairly, to show kindness to everyone, to help those being hurt or bullied, and to help others feel safe and happy at school. We hope you enjoy the pictures of some of the children working on this project!
Recently, the NMS Student Senate hosted a Pi Day event during every lunch period. Students had the opportunity to purchase tickets for a chance to throw a pie at a teacher or staff member on their team. The event was a resounding success...raising over $350 to be used for future student events at the middle school. This event would not have been possible without the support of Mrs. Rine and Dr. Fernandez (who graciously volunteered to be pied in each lunch period!) We also want to thank Mr. Willie Covington for allowing us to mess up his cafeteria, Shannon Oliver, who spent the day videoing the event, and Mr. Shupp & Mr. Cory for their assistance setting up and cleaning up.
Sarah Harrison, high school senior, was a 2022 Gold Key winner of Scholastic Art and Writing awards. Her digital art piece was displayed at the Harrisburg State Museum and will be competing at the national level. Great Job, Sarah! We are Bobcat Proud of you! The Mt. Wolf VFW and Auxiliary sponsored their annual youth scholarship programs again this year. We are proud to share that the following Bobcats were selected as finalists: Voice of Democracy Contest: (Grades 9-12) Sarah Harrison, Jacob Sands, and Colby Thompson Colby is also a finalist at the next level competition. (District 21 - York, Adams and Frank- lin Counties) Patriot's Pen Essay Contest: (Grades 6-8) Hannah Theodore, Emma Poteet, Jules Martinez Many thanks to the VFW for making these opportunities available for our students!
First graders, Dawson and Charlie, were recognized as this months Iwrite winners. They recorded their stories on Flipgrid. They were also greeted with a medal and certificate from Mr. Clifton. Great job, guys! St. Patrick's Day was full of fun and learning in Mrs. Cassell's kindergarten class. They grew rainbows, graphed lucky charms, wrote about what they would do with a pot of gold, and SO much more!
Second Graders in Mrs. Zortman’s class at Mt. Wolf took advantage of the beautiful weather this week. They took their math lesson outside and measured their jumps in inches and centimeters. It’s always fun to learn math outside! A little St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans in Mrs. Vanada’s kindergarten classroom.
This weeks STEM challenge in Mrs. Mohney’s kindergarten class at Orendorf: design and build a leprechaun trap! We had lots of great ideas and worked hard, but we still didn’t catch any leprechauns! National Athletic Training Month is held every March in order to spread awareness about the important work of athletic train- ers. Northeastern School District would like to thank Zach Noll and Drew Schryver for taking such good care of our Bobcats!
Those tricky leprechauns visited Mrs. Crowley‘s kindergarten classroom at Orendorf! The children made traps to catch them and then went on a treasure hunt to find their pot of gold. In the pot of gold was also the ingredients for shamrock sundaes! What a fun day we had!
On Thursday, March 10th, 2022, Northeastern took two vans full of high school students to Penn State University, York campus, for the York County Alliance for Learning (YCAL) Career Education Readiness Workshop (CREW.) CREW exists to help students who may not have a set career or educational plan after high school graduation. Students attended their choice of three (of the 16) career cluster informational presentations delivered by a business or training partner associated with that industry. In the second half of the day students were provided the opportunity to attend post-secondary and employment skills sessions to help them make connections and possible decisions as they approach graduation. We had a fantastic day! Any career exploration program through YCAL can count for five hours of community service. Students can sign up at ycal.us for a career of interest to explore. Please contact your school counselor for additional information.
Dear NHS Families, We need your help! On March 29 and 30, Junior Achievement of South Central PA will be at Northeastern High School with their STEM Summit Program. All students in 10th grade will be participating in the day-long event designed to introduce students to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. For this day to be a success, we need volunteers to facilitate STEM activities for the day as students rotate through stations. If we do not fill these volunteer roles, we are in danger of not being able to run this meaningful event. Please also share this opportunity with friends, neighbors and colleagues who may be interested in helping the students of our school. A flyer with all of the information for the day and a direct link for you to sign-up as a volunteer can be found here. STEM Summit Volunteer Flyer.pdf You do not have to be an approved school volunteer to help with this day. Junior Achievement will provide online training as well as on-site support to all volunteers. A light breakfast and lunch will also be available for all volunteers. Please consider volunteering and join us as we spend the day empowering and inspiring our students. This opportunity is only possible with the support of wonderful volunteers like you. To sign up to volunteer please contact Shannon Baker with JA’s Volunteer Engagement Team at sbaker@jascpa.org or stem@jascpa.org. Respectfully, Mathew Gay Principal
Middle School students replicated Clinton's Big Ditch during Social Studies class. Clinton's Big Ditch was started in 1817 and the Erie canal linked Lake Erie to the Hudson River and was completed in 1825. The canal system was 4 feet deep and 40 feet wide and carried freight along the way. Students created their own version of barges to carry freight along the canal. Water depth was 4 inches and students planned, built, tested, and revised their barges to carry as much weight as they possibly could without sinking or hitting the bottom of the canal.
