Newville A Beautiful Community Today News W WEEL LCCO OMME E to The Neighborhood: Whisker's Brewing My passion for opening a brewery started a few years ago when I began experimenting with brewing in my own home. I enjoyed it so much that in early 2020, about the same time the pandemic hit, I started exploring the possibility of opening a brewery. My wife, daughter and I visited many breweries in the area, not only to get ideas on how to start a brewery, but also to support the breweries who were trying to stay open during the pandemic. I can’t tell you how many breweries where we sat outside in the cold just to taste their brews, because we were not allowed to be served inside. But it was the perfect research and helped us formulate a good business plan. My family and I are originally from Waynesboro, but we came to the area in the mid- 80s, and have lived in the Big Spring School District since; all of my children graduated from Big Spring. Two of my children now attend Penn State and the oldest is in medical school getting ready to start her residency at Penn State Milton Hershey Medical Center. We feel at home in Newville. Newville News Spring 2022 W WEEL LCCO OMME E to The Neighborhood: Whisker's Brewing I would love to hold Whisker’s grand opening this coming summer. We are having outside events in good weather soon, probably just on Saturdays or Sundays. Although I am the owner and brewer, I have many people wanting to work with me including a general manager, chef, bartender, and servers. I am hopeful that eventually I’ll either hire or train another brewer. Whisker’s will be serving only beer, and eventually we will have 11 different beers on tap, one hard seltzer and one cask ale. We will serve soda, wine, and mixed drinks, as well. When the fire hit our building, it was absolutely amazing and heart-warming to feel the outreach from the community. I just cannot wait to open because I believe we will become a gathering place and develop regular customers that will make us feel like we are all old friends. Story by: Dean Yaukey, Whisker's Brewing In May 2021, the community members of Newville voted to approve the sale of beer & liquor within the STAY TUNED FOR Borough limits. Newville News Spring 2022 FROM THE DESK OF THE BOROUGH COUNCIL PRESIDENT As we are navigating out of the COVID pandemic, we are all looking forward to seeing life in Newville return to normal. The Newville Borough Council is excited about a number of projects that are in the works. Later this year we hope to begin construction on a new splash pad at our Community Park. The splash pad will be handicap accessible and will replace the current sprinkler in the park. This will be a nice addition for our children playing in the park. The splash pad will be paid with grant money. A new scoreboard will also be erected in the outfield of the ball-field. Our park is a gem and continues to be a great resource for our citizens, thanks to Mr. Kevin Yost & his team of volunteers who handle the maintenance. We are also seeking grant money to replace the traffic light in town and to make that intersection more attractive and functional. To go along with this, we will need to research and implement ways to make the intersection safer, especially developing a way to eliminate turns from tractor-trailers. We also hope to soon break ground on the new municipal building at the entrance of town. Along with the building, we are looking at ways to make this space more accessible to the community for recreational activities such as fishing and the development of a walking trail along the Big Spring, connecting the new municipal building to Laughlin Mill. These projects have been provided to the community through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Gobin and we are especially grateful for their support. A committee has been formed to bring the Newville Police Department Office back into the Borough. The temporary move to Green Ridge Village was a tough decision to make, but there just wasn't an immediate feasible option that didn't require significant construction and or provide the needed space. We hope to have a plan wrapped up sometime in the summer. The Council has also been working with the Economic Development Authority to make Newville more business-friendly in order to attract new businesses into town. A sidewalk rehabilitation program will soon be rolled out and communicated to regions in town. We all love that Newville is a walkable community and in order to maintain the character of the town, we need to assure that the sidewalks are safe to walk. We are also excited for our summer recreational program to return in a few months. This is a great opportunity for our children. We will also kick off our Last Friday concerts at the fountain. The concerts will run all summer long and have been "a hit" in our borough. We always appreciate feedback and concerns from the citizens of Newville. Please don't hesitate to reach out to the Council members or come to a Council meeting to share your thoughts. We all want Newville to be a great community to live and do business in. Hometown History Newville News Spring 2022 NEWVILLE DAYS GONE BY By 1728, the first pioneer, Andrew Ralston, settled on what is now Green Ridge Village. It is easy to see the many things that attracted him to this small nook in the Cumberland Valley: a variety of trees, the fertile land, a multi-trade of native fruits and berries, ample game, and our own Big Spring, the second largest fresh water spring stream in the country. In addition, close by, the Big Spring ran into the Conodoguinet Creek , which eventually dumped into the Susquehanna River. The Scots and Scots-Irish that followed him found an area comfortably similar to their native lands, and not a German name makes its appearance until 1790, the official founding of the town. In the years following Andrew Ralston’s arrival, the Newville area was already developing rapidly. The first mill along the Big Spring was built by William Laughlin in 1762. The first settlers on the tract of land that would become Newville, the Laughlin brothers, laid their claim in 1732 or 1733. William Laughlin presented 89 acres to the Presbyterian Church, who constructed a log church in 1737. By the time the town was established, there were already two churches in place. On February 26, 1817, the borough of Newville was incorporated. From the beginning, Newville was a well-established commercial and residential center. There were physicians in the town since 1792, and even a pharmacist. Pack trains and mule trains traveled up the Mt. Rock Road into town when they forded the Big Spring and traveled on to Springfield, stopping at the many taverns along the way. The Scots and Scot-Irish built mills along the Big Spring. When the railroad arrived in 1857, Newville grew to meet the station in New Town, and factories were built along the line. Businesses began to grow in the town. By the mid 20th Century, Main Street, High Street, and the present day Big Spring Avenue were home to many businesses. Tin shops, clothing stores, hardware stores, a jeweler, liquor store, several drug stores, a bevy of Mom and Pop grocery stores, as well as others serving other neighborhoods, banks, a five and dime store, Leon Wagner’s Chevrolet dealership, a handful of barbers, successful restaurants, and even a gas station. The small town never lacked in entertainment in its early days. Vaudeville and minstrel shows were extremely popular. Parades celebrated major holidays, and a popular cornet band was organized by Paris Chambers who was acclaimed as the most important cornet player of his time. In later years there was a movie theatre. Of course, baseball games were a draw during summer months. The town never wanted for schools or churches. Both institutions served many functions for WRITTEN BY THE the citizens in the early years, as they do today. The fire company, Lion’s Club and Kiwanis LATE JOAN BREHM, club also enrich our lives with their community minded service and entertainment. FORMER NEWVILLE BOROUGH For all of its assets, the best and most valuable is still Newville’s citizens. It’s a fine community HISTORIAN where the citizens greet each other with a wave, smile, and a warm and gracious “hello”. That’s our community, proud, strong, with 270 years of quality life behind her, a place to call home. 4 West Street, Newville, PA Phone: 717.776.7633 www.newvilleborough.com
